130 canines of top breeds vye for honours at open dog show in Tiruchi

The Delta Kennel Club of Tiruchi hosted a dog show in the city on Sunday with an aim to provide a platform to breeders to showcase their dogs and propagate ethical canine breeding practices in the delta region of Tamil Nadu. Sharat Sharma, an affiliate judge with the Kennel Club of India, presided over the show. The dogs were judged based on four criteria namely obedience, teething, stacking, and handling. A total of 167 dogs were registered for the event, of which 130 were present. The canines competed in 11 groups. These were classified as shepherd, working, and hunting dogs, terriers, hounds, retrievers, small dog breeds, and Indian dog breeds. Dog breeders and handlers from Tiruchi, Madurai, Udhagamandalam, Coimbatore, and various districts and States took part in the event. A. Clament Raj, secretary of the Delta Kennel Club - Tiruchi, said inculcating ethical breeding practices would help in preserving the genetic make-up of the dog breeds. 'To this end, the Delta Kennel Club of Tiruchi plans to host workshops on ethical breeding for the benefit of the breeders soon,' Mr. Raj added. Club president A. Rajavel said they were planning to conduct competition for dogs in future. E. Abdul Kalam, a dog breeder from Kattur, voiced enthusiasm over the initiative. He said the open dog shows would enable breeders to train the dogs and win accolades from a recognised club. 'Earlier, if we wanted to compete in an open dog show we would have to travel to Ooty or Coimbatore,' said Mr. Kalam.
