KCP's ‘excited' reaction to being included in Desmond Bane-Magic trade to Grizzlies
The post KCP's 'excited' reaction to being included in Desmond Bane-Magic trade to Grizzlies appeared first on ClutchPoints. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is looking ahead with optimism after being dealt to the Memphis Grizzlies in a blockbuster trade that sent Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic on Father's Day. Advertisement The 32-year-old veteran guard addressed the trade on the latest episode of Dawg Talk with J Mac and Kenny Gaines, revealing that while the news came during a family vacation, his initial surprise eventually gave way to excitement about joining Memphis. 'I knew before everybody, it wasn't really breaking news for me, but it happened Father's Day,' Caldwell-Pope said. 'I'm on vacation with my family… it's literally about 11:30–11:35, almost noon, and I'm going to get something out of my bag, and my phone is vibrating, but I don't get to it in time.' 'So I'm checking, and it's my agent – he never calls me multiple times, so it's literally like three to four times, like damn, let me get to my phone and call him back. As soon as I call, you just got traded to the Grizzlies… quick shock because it kinda hit me right there like, damn, it's Father's Day. I didn't want to get this type of news; we could've at least waited until Monday.' Kentavious Caldwell-Pope says trade from Magic to Grizzlies was emotional but exciting John Jones-USA TODAY Sports Caldwell-Pope admitted the timing made it difficult to process at first, especially when it came to informing his family. But as he reflected on the trade and the Grizzlies' direction, he felt confident in the fit. Advertisement 'The more I thought about it, the more excited I got about it, even though I was a little sad because it happened on Father's Day,' he said. 'I know this game; I know this business, but the more I thought about the trade, the team that I was going to, the players I was going to be playing with – I know some of the guys – and then the way the organization is trying to go, I felt like I fit right in. I got super excited.' Caldwell-Pope was acquired alongside Cole Anthony in exchange for Desmond Bane, who was sent to the Magic for four unprotected first-round picks and one pick swap. The Grizzlies are coming off a challenging 2024–25 season that ended in a first-round sweep at the hands of the Western Conference champion Oklahoma City Thunder. Star guard Ja Morant was injured during the series, further compounding Memphis' postseason struggles. The former NBA champion is entering his 13th season after spending one year with Orlando, where he averaged 8.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. He appeared in 77 games, shooting 43.9% from the field and 34.2% from three-point range across 29.6 minutes per night. Signed to a three-year, $66 million deal last offseason, Caldwell-Pope brings perimeter defense, veteran experience, and playoff pedigree to a Grizzlies team looking to rebound after a difficult year. Magic Send Two-Word Message to NBA Champion After Trade With Grizzlies originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Orlando Magic closed the 2024–25 regular season at 41–41, securing the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference. In the first round they faced the No. 2 Boston Celtics and were dispatched in five games, underscoring Orlando's need for a proven go-to scorer alongside its emerging young core. Advertisement Following a disappointing end in the postseason, the Magic agreed to send veteran guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony and four unprotected first-round picks (the 2025 No. 16 overall pick plus selections in 2026 via Phoenix Suns, 2028 and 2030) along with a 2029 first-round pick swap to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Desmond Bane. Orlando Magic guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (3).Dale Zanine-Imagn Images Shortly after the deal was announced, Orlando's official Twitter account offered a send-off to their departing veteran. 'thank you @CaldwellPope' Over Caldwell-Pope's only season in Orlando, he averaged 8.7 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists per contest while shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 34.2 percent from three-point range. His perimeter defense yielded 1.3 steals per game and helped anchor the Magic's top-5 defensive rating. Advertisement Off the court, Caldwell-Pope was competing on the first year of a three-year, $66 million contract signed last offseason. A two-time NBA champion—with the Lakers in 2020 and the Nuggets in 2023—his signing underscored Orlando's faith in his veteran leadership and championship pedigree. However, with Desmond Bane joining All-Stars Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, Orlando enters the offseason equipped with a proven scorer capable of shouldering the offensive load—a move aimed squarely at winning a wide-open Eastern Conference next season. How does the Desmond Bane trade from the Grizzlies to the Magic affect the Boston Celtics?
How does the Desmond Bane trade from the Grizzlies to the Magic affect the Boston Celtics? How does the Desmond Bane trade from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Orlando Magic affect the Boston Celtics, if at all? The Magic ponied up four first round draft picks, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Cole Anthony to secure Bane to their roster as they mushed their chips in to make a run at the 2026 NBA Finals in what is looking like a down season for Boston while star Celtics forward Jayson Tatum recovers from a torn Achilles tendon injury. Does this move change the order of the NBA's Eastern Conference for the 2025-26 NBA season? What about in future seasons? Was the move an overpay, or did it make sense given the market and the assets going out in the deal? The hosts of the CLNS Media "The Big Three NBA" podcast, A. Sherrod Blakely, Gary Washburn, and Kwani Lunis took some time on a recent episode of their show to talk the trade and its impact over. Check it out below! The report comes as the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder are in the fray to win the National Basketball Association (NBA) 2025 finals. With the NBA off-season underway for all franchises except Indiana and Oklahoma, the Grizzlies decided to trade Bane for guards Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Cole Anthony, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania. The Grizzlies also get a first-round pick swap and four unprotected first-round picks for Bane. This is the first major off-season trade for the NBA sides this year.
