2 criminals arrested after encounters in Jaunpur, Varanasi
Varanasi: Two chain snatchers were arrested after separate encounters in Jaunpur and Varanasi on Friday night.
Jaunpur's Kerakat CO Ajit Kumar said on Saturday that acting on a tip-off about movement of two criminals, a joint team of SWAT and Kerakat police cordoned off the canal bridge intersection at Puranpur Mazar around midnight.
While passing through the area, when the duo realised, they were surrounded by the police they opened fire.
The police also opened fire in self-defence, resulting in one of them, identified as Chandradeep Patel of Shivpur in Varanasi, suffering a bullet injury in the left leg and being arrested. His accomplice, however, managed to escape. The police rushed Patel to the district hospital. During interrogation, Patel said he used to sell looted items to a jeweller Sanjay Seth of Shivpur in Varanasi.
Subsequently, the police also arrested Seth from the Thanagaddi area.
Seth confessed that he used to purchase looted gold chains for Rs 20,000 each and melt them down. Melted gold weighing 4,400 grams was recovered from them. Prior to this, a stolen motorcycle, a pistol, cartridges, and a mobile phone were recovered from Patel. Patel confessed to his involvement in many cases of chain snatching in the past few months.

In Varanasi, Adampur police arrested a chain snatcher, Algu Chauhan of Padao of Chandauli, in Rajghat area on Friday night following an exchange of fire.
ADCP Kashi zone, T Saravanan, said he was involved in five chain-snatching incidents. According to police, Chauhan, 26, was involved in two recent chain-snatching incidents in Adampur and Kotwali police station areas. The police recovered firearms, cartridges and a motorcycle from him and rushed him to the hospital.
