Bindu urges Ciza to revoke suspension of KU registrar
Thiruvananthapuram: Higher education minister R Bindu urged Kerala University vice-chancellor in- charge Ciza Thomas to immediately revoke the suspension of the university registrar, K S Anilkumar.
In a letter to Ciza, who holds the charge of the Kerala VC until July 8 during the absence of Mohanan Kunnummal, the higher education minister, who is also the pro-chancellor of the university, said the suspension of Anilkumar by the VC was carried out due to external pressure and was against the university rules.
The minister pointed out in the letter that the VC does not have the authority to suspend the registrar. "According to the University of Kerala Act of 1974, the registrar is an officer appointed by the syndicate.
Only the syndicate has the power to issue disciplinary actions and suspension orders," the minister said in the letter.
Bindu also noted that there was no urgent situation at the university necessitating such a suspension, and it can reasonably be assumed that the VC's action was influenced by external pressure. The minister stated that this action was against the interests of the university and the higher education sector.
Anilkumar was suspended from service on charges that he insulted governor Rajendra Arlekar and undermined the dignity of the university by cancelling a private programme attended by the governor over the display of Bharat Mata portrait on the stage.
