KEAM: State government move to ignore committee suggestion backfires

KOCHI: The state government's decision not to consider the Standardisation Review Committee's suggestion that implementing a new formula this year is not feasible has backfired with the High Court rejecting the last-minute change in the prospectus of the Kerala Engineering, Architecture, and Medical Entrance Examination (KEAM). The committee's suggestion that 'introducing a new formula or making any modifications to the existing one would only be possible after thorough and detailed studies' was produced before the High Court following its directive. Though the government had admitted the existence of the report, it was not placed before the court earlier. As per the report, the government was asked to ensure that any new formula implemented is 'demonstrably better than the current one'. However, the committee recommended that in the current year, the number of years should be reduced to 5 years for the calculation of 'overall mean and standard deviation.' The committee suggested to revise the existing 50:50 weightage ratio currently applied between the normalised entrance examination marks and the standardised total marks/grades obtained in the qualifying examination (final year) to a new ratio of 60:40 (Entrance score : 60, Qualifying score: 40). This proposal regarding weightage ration was agreed upon by three members, while one member, Sivakumar, expressed dissent. As per the report, based on the preliminary observations, the method that uses statistical parameters such as Overall Range, Group Minimum, and Group Range was considered by the committee members to be the most appropriate. But implementing the new method this year would not be scientifically appropriate, as a more comprehensive study is required to make an authoritative comparison with the current method. It was also noted that the formula was tested using only a very limited sample and that the parameters used in the formula were derived from that sample itself.

Kerala High Court cancels last-minute change to KEAM prospectus; Govt files appeal

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday struck down a last-minute change made by the state government to the KEAM 2025 entrance exam prospectus, calling it 'illegal, arbitrary, and unjustified'. The state government filed an appeal before a division bench against the single bench's decision, hours after it issued the order on a petition filed by a group of CBSE students who sat for the KEAM (Kerala Engineering, Architecture, and Medical Entrance Examination). The matter is expected to be considered on Thursday. Earlier, in their plea, the CBSE students argued that the change, issued on July 1–just an hour before the rank list was published–altered the method for calculating final scores of candidates. The court observed that the timing of the decision appeared suspicious. In the order, Justice D K Singh said that the change in the prospectus one hour before the publication of the rank list after the examination is wholly unjustified, illegal, and arbitrary. The court ordered that the rank list be reissued using the original formula specified in the February 19 prospectus. 'The change in the prospectus is set aside. The Commissioner for Entrance Examinations is directed to publish the rank list in accordance with the prospectus, which was issued on February 19, 2025,' the order said, while disposing of the writ petition. The court said that prima facie, it appears that somebody looked at the results and found that the students from the Kerala stream have not done fairly good, and to satisfy the constituency, such a mala fide decision in an arbitrary manner has been taken to change the prospectus one hour before the publication of the result on July 1, 2025. 'Such an exercise of power is wholly arbitrary, illegal, unjustified, and cannot be countenanced on any ground,' the order said.

Kerala High Court quashes KEAM 2025 rank list over last-minute prospectus change

In a blow to the state government, the Kerala High Court on Wednesday struck down the KEAM 2025 (Kerala Engineering, Architecture, and Medical Entrance Examination) rank list, calling a last-minute change to the prospectus 'illegal, arbitrary, and unjustified.'The court directed the authorities to publish a revised rank list as per the original, unamended DK Singh, delivering the order, said, 'The change in the prospectus one hour before the publication of the rank list after the examination is wholly unjustified, illegal, and arbitrary.'advertisement The court observed that the timing of the decision 'appears suspect,' noting that 'prima facie, it appears that somebody looked at the results and found that students from the Kerala stream had not done fairly good, and to satisfy the constituency, such a mala fide decision in an arbitrary manner was taken.'The government had amended the prospectus on the day of the rank list release, changing the weightage ratio of marks in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry from the original 1:1:1 to 5:3:2. The court ordered the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations to publish a fresh rank list based on the unamended prospectus issued on February 19, 2025.'Such an exercise of power is wholly arbitrary, illegal, unjustified, and cannot be countenanced on any ground,' the court said while disposing of the to the verdict, State Higher Education Minister Dr R Bindu said the matter would be discussed with the Chief Minister before deciding on the next course of action.- EndsTune InMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Kerala

Kerala HC cancels engineering and medical results; revised guidelines affect CBSE, ICSE students

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday annulled the results of the Kerala Engineering, Architecture, and Medical (KEAM) 2025 entrance examinations, ruling that the last-minute amendment to the prospectus was unlawful. The KEAM exams were conducted by the Commissioner of Entrance Examination from 23 to 29 April 2025, with results announced on 14 May. The final rank list was published on 1 July. Justice D.K. Singh observed that the revised ranking methodology for KEAM 2025 disproportionately disadvantaged students who had studied the CBSE or ICSE syllabus during their higher secondary education. Consequently, the Court set aside the amended prospectus and directed the state to issue a revised rank list in accordance with the original, unamended prospectus.
