Peroorkada Flyover work to start by September
: After years of delays, Peroorkada flyover project is finally gaining momentum, with tender proceedings expected to wrap up this month and construction likely to begin by late Aug or early Sept, according to MLA VK Prasanth. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala (RBDCK), which is executing the project under the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), is set to float construction tenders within the next two weeks. As part of the groundwork, six remaining buildings at Peroorkada have been marked for demolition. Owners have been issued a strict two-day deadline to vacate, and authorities have ruled out further extensions. If necessary, forcible eviction will be carried out to avoid further delays. About 50% of the demolition work has already been completed, including the removal of more than 25 shops to widen the road at the congested junction, where major routes from Nedumangad, Kudappanakunnu, and nearby areas meet. The location has long been a traffic bottleneck for commuters. The planned flyover will span approximately 874 metres, connecting Lourdes Church at Peroorkada to St Jude Church at Vazhayila, at an estimated cost of Rs 106 crore. Construction is expected to take 18 months once underway. Land acquisition for the project concluded in late 2024, with compensation already disbursed to over 80 landowners. Only six structures remain to be cleared. Demolition tenders for these are expected within two weeks. Originally planned as an underpass, the project was revised into a flyover after underground pipelines were discovered, a change Prasanth defended despite concerns from local merchants over business disruptions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The tender will be called this month itself, and construction is expected to begin by the end of Augor early Sept," Prasanth said. The project was first inaugurated by Public Works Minister PA Mohammed Riyas in Nov 2021 but faced repeated delays due to legal disputes over land.

Rs 306-crore nod for Kochi's Chellanam seawall phase II
KOCHI: The second phase of the tetrapod seawall project at Chellanam, costing Rs 306 crore, has received approval at a ministerial-level meeting held in Thiruvananthapuram. As previously planned, the remaining 3.6-km stretch of the seawall will now be constructed. The project will be implemented with funding from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). Industries Minister P Rajeeve said the revised administrative sanction for the project will be issued this week itself. Approval for the second phase was granted with special consideration to ensure coastal protection in the remaining vulnerable stretches of the Chellanam coast where the tetrapod structure has not yet been constructed. The first phase of the tetrapod seawall, extending 7.3 km, was completed in 2023 at a cost of Rs 347 crore. It was the first decision taken by the state cabinet after the current government assumed office.

New bridge to connect Amboori's high ranges
Thiruvananthapuram : The Kumbichalkadavu Bridge in Amboori, the state's longest multi-span river bridge, will be inaugurated in July by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Built over the Karippayar River with seven spans, the bridge was completed at a cost of Rs 24.71 crore, funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). This major infrastructure project connects the remote southern high ranges of Amboori with urban centres, ending decades of isolation for rural and tribal communities. Once open, it will directly benefit over 1,000 tribal families across 11 settlements in Thodumala, including Karikkuzhi, Chakkappara, Sankumkonam, Kaipanplavila, Thenmala, and Kunnathumala. Parassala MLA C K Hareendran confirmed that the inauguration will take place before July 25, once finishing touches are completed. "The exact date is yet to be fixed," he said. Hareendran added that the bridge addresses a long-standing demand of around 2,800 residents in the area, who previously relied on unsafe country boats and rafts to cross the river. In addition to the bridge, a network of 16 connecting roads, both major and minor, is under construction at a cost of Rs 7.99 crore. These routes will extend through Chakkappara and Kunnathmala, further improving accessibility and integrating the bridge into the local infrastructure. The bridge is also being positioned as a tourism getaway, complementing attractions like the Neyyar dam, Agasthyarkoodam trekking base, and the Meenmutty waterfalls.

Sreekaryam flyover initial construction phase to be completed in three months
Thiruvananthapuram: The major construction phase of Sreekaryam flyover, including stormwater drains, utility ducts, service roads and utility shifting, is expected to be completed within the next three months. The work is progressing at a fast pace despite the monsoon rains. Kochi Metro Rail Limited, the implementing agency, is planning to complete the initial phase in three months to ensure smooth conveyance for commuters and motorists through service roads. Once the initial phase wraps up, the central portion of the road will be cordoned off to facilitate piling and construction of main flyover pillars. Unlike other flyover projects, Sreekaryam's piling work is being executed with enhanced strength and depth, specifically engineered to support the future Metro rail pillars that may run along the divider, an alignment coordinated with the proposed Metro rail corridor in the state capital. Currently, work is going on to complete the infrastructure beneath the elevated carriageway. "Prioritising the service roads and utilities at this stage is essential," said an official close to the project. "It is about laying a strong foundation to ensure safety and minimal disruption when the main overbridge construction begins," the official said. Approved in Sept 2024, the flyover is a flagship element of the city's infrastructure upgrade, aligned with the proposed Metro system. The design features common piers meant to support both the flyover and the Metro pillars, optimising land use and reducing duplication. Project cost stands around Rs 170–177 crore, encompassing civil works, land acquisition, utility shifting and service road construction. Funding has been arranged through Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). An earlier tender awarded to the construction firm serving as the main contractor quoted Rs 71.38 crore for the flyover structure, including negotiations to bring the estimate just above the technical sanction of Rs 61 crore, allowing swift commencement to avoid delays. The land acquisition covering approximately 1.34 hectares from 168 affected parties across Cheruvakkal, Ulloor and Pangappara was completed late 2024 and demolition of existing structures concluded prior to full mobilisation in early 2025. In Jan 2025, the contractor started mobilising equipment and labour, with the four-lane flyover extending 535m and its carriageway measuring 7.5m wide. In addition, 5.5m service roads flank both sides, with 1.5m footpaths incorporated for pedestrian use. "Shifting utilities and completing stormwater drains along the length there are the priorities now," said the official. "We are making sure commuters can use the parallel service roads without hindrance," he added. With the underdrainage, ducts and relocations nearing completion, the next major activity will be piling the central columns. These foundations, laid to Metro-compatible specifications, will uphold a flyover capable of carrying both surface traffic and Metro infrastructure, said a site engineer. A total of Rs 98 crore has been disbursed to the landowners who conceded land for the project. A total of 168 buildings were razed as part of the project. In 2016, the govt green-lit the construction of flyovers at Sreekaryam, Pattom and Ulloor for a total cost of Rs 272 crore as part of the proposed Metro rail project. However, the flyover projects at Pattom and Ulloor will be implemented only after finalising the alignment of the Metro project.
