Kochi corporation soon to start major canal rejuvenation
Kochi: City corporation will soon start works to rejuvenate major canals in the city. As part of this, Chilavannur Canal would be renovated by removing sludge and adding walkways and aesthetically pleasing spaces along the canal banks, mayor M Anil Kumar said in a statement. The project will cost Rs 8.4 crore. Corporation has prepared a beautification plan for the canal banks and submitted for KIIFB's approval. Another major project is the renovation of Market Canal. As the tender process is already completed for this, KIIFB has allocated Rs 28.77 crore for the project. The mayor also announced that construction of a higher-capacity sewage plant at Elamkulam would begin shortly, with an allocation of Rs 341.97 crore. Kerala Water Authority will serve as the implementing agency of the project. Meanwhile, the civic body is also planning to reconstruct the narrow Chettichira Bridge on Subhash Chandra Bose Road. For this, Rs 4.51 crore has been set apart. The project is being retendered due to high quotes in the initial tender. The mayor also said that all sewage connections opening into the canals would be closed soon thus reducing sludge accumulation and eliminating the need for periodic dredging.

Tensions mar corporation's Karkidaka Vavu meeting
Thiruvananthapuram : A preparatory meeting organised by city corporation on Wednesday in connection with the forthcoming Karkidaka Vavu Bali rituals turned tense following disruptions by BJP representatives. The meeting, chaired by the mayor, was intended to include various elected representatives and officials to coordinate arrangements for the annual ritual. However, BJP workers allegedly manhandled deputy mayor P K Raju for not holding a discussion on the alleged graft charges against the ruling party. Despite the disruption, the meeting was held and necessary preparations for conducting the rituals efficiently were finalised. The Vavu Bali is on July 24. Thiruvallam Parasurama Temple and Shanghumugham beach are the major centres for the ritual under the corporation limits. The meeting emphasised on desilting and cleaning of bathing ghats at Thiruvallam Temple by the city corporation and the deployment of more lifeguards at Shanghumugham. Kerala Water Authority will rectify the showers set for devotees near the river at Thiruvallam. Parking grounds have been identified across Thiruvallam and a strict parking ban will be enforced on the NH 66.

Nettoor reels under water crisis as KWA fails to act
Kochi: Despite continuous monsoon showers, residents of Nettoor are facing an acute shortage of drinking water due to multiple leaks in pipelines maintained by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA). Though local councillors have staged protests demanding urgent repairs, the situation remains unresolved. Residents say the water shortage has persisted for several weeks, severely disrupting daily life. Sheeba Jayan, a Nettoor resident working at a printing press in Kaloor, said families are now forced to rely on private water suppliers. "I live with my daughter and a large share of my income is spent on buying water. We've been struggling to survive for weeks," she said. She added that despite lodging complaints with KWA, no action has been taken. Saliny Anilraj, councillor of Nettoor North, said the crisis is especially severe for households with elderly patients, menstruating women and children. "People are forced to use bottled water even for basic needs. We've staged several protests, but officials appear indifferent," Anilraj said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Искате да научите повече за новото BMW 2 Gran Coupe? Youths bathe in water tank in Alappuzha, disrupt supply to 50,000 people
ALAPPUZHA: Why would anyone be jailed for bathing? Most certainly, if that happens inside an overhead water tank and ends up blocking the supply of water to more than 50,000 people! That's precisely what three intoxicated youths did at Pallippuram in Alappuzha on Saturday evening. The revelry has landed them behind bars for 14 days. According to the police, the trio — K Jayaraj (27) of Panavally, Athul Krishna (27) and Yadukrishnan (25), the last two from Thaikkattussery—sneaked into the 24-metre-high tank located on the Kerala Water Authority premises at Vellimuttam in Pallippuram panchayat around 6.30 pm. 'When we reached the site, the youths were above the tank. We brought them down and recorded their arrest,' an officer with the Cherthala police station said. The Cherthala First Class Judicial Magistrate Court remanded them for 14 days for illegally climbing atop a public water tank and entering the drinking water supply system, the officer said. 'The accused accessed the tank through the manhole located on top of the structure and entered the drinking water stored inside. Local residents who noticed the act promptly alerted the police,' the officer said. KWA suffers Rs 1.4-lakh loss Given the breach and the potential contamination, the authorities were forced to drain the entire tank, disrupting the drinking water supply to several parts of the panchayat. 'The tank has a capacity of 16 lakh litres. The entire water was drained. Drinking water supply to more than 50,000 people was disrupted for two days. The incident has raised concerns over public safety, hygiene, and need for enhanced security around essential public infrastructure,' a KWA official said. A preliminary estimate put the loss the water authority suffered at Rs 1.4 lakh. 'The exact loss will be ascertained in the coming days,' the official said. The tank was chlorinated on Monday and distribution resumed by evening after water samples were tested, the official added.
