Nimisha Priya Action Council seeks nod to send team to Yemen

Kochi: The Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, which is supporting the family of the Keralite nurse facing a death sentence for a murder committed in Yemen, has approached the ministry of external affairs (MEA) seeking permission to send a delegation to the West Asian nation for mediation talks. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The action council submitted an application and a list of five persons who it wants to be taken to Yemen for negotiation. "The action council is facing serious challenges to make the discussions fruitful as the Indian negotiation team is unable to travel to Yemen due to the ongoing travel ban," said the letter submitted to the MEA secretary. The names are of the action council's legal adviser Subhash Chandran, treasurer Kunjammed Koorachund, core committee member Sajeev Kumar, Kerala State Haj Committee chairman Hussain Saqafi and Islamic scholar Hamid, representing Kanthapuram Aboobacker Musaliyar's religious group. The letter also requests the govt to propose at least two officials representing Centre to lead the negotiation process. "The socio-economic position of the family (of Nimisha Priya) shows that they would not be able to initiate any effective negotiations directly with the family of victims who reside in Yemen. Moreover, the victim's brother recently made certain allegations such as serious financial frauds against the power of attorney holder of the Nimisha Priya's mother with regard to the instant case," the letter said. Priya was convicted of murdering Talal Abdo Mahdi, with whom she started a health clinic in Yemen's capital of Sana'a and later reportedly entered into a marriage in 2017. Though Priya's execution was scheduled for July 16, it was postponed. Nimisha case: Complaint filed over hate campaign

Kozhikode: RJD national council member Salim Madavoor filed a complaint with state police chief Ravada Chandrasekhar, demanding action against those spreading hate during efforts to secure the release of Keralite nurse Nimisha Priya, who is on death row in a Yemeni prison. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Priya is on death row for the 2017 murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi. In his complaint, Madavoor said some individuals are trying to block her release by posting comments under the Facebook posts of Abdul Fattah Mahdi, the brother of the victim and by interviewing Mahdi's family members. He alleged that a man named Mubarak Ravuthar tried to provoke residents in Talal's native village. "It's clear that some people from Kerala are spreading hate on social media, including replies under Abdul Fattah Mahdi's Facebook posts. Some comments are also coming from fake IDs," the complaint stated. On Wednesday, Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council had urged the public to remain calm and avoid online debates or disruptive actions that could harm ongoing efforts to free her. In a statement, the council said certain comments and actions from Kerala are making her release more difficult.

Keralite missing after Houthi rebels attack cargo ship in Red Sea

A Keralite hailing from Pathiyoor, near Kayamkulam, in Alappuzha has been reported missing after a cargo vessel sank in Red Sea following an attack by Yemen's Houthi rebels on July 7. The missing person has been identified as Anilkumar Raveendran, 52, a security officer. According to family members, Mr. Anilkumar last contacted them over the phone on July 6. Since the attack, the family has received no communication and is desperately seeking information about his whereabouts. The vessel, MV Eternity C, a Liberian-flagged cargo ship, was en route to the Israeli port of Eilat when it came under attack. At the time, the ship had a crew of 25 onboard, including nationals from India, the Philippines, Russia and Greece. Four crew members were killed in the attack. Ten others, including another Keralite identified as Augustine of Parasala in Thiruvananthapuram, were rescued. Eleven crew members, including Mr. Anilkumar, are still missing. On Thursday, Sheeja, Mr. Anilkumar's wife, visited Augustine. 'We do not know what happened to my husband after the attack. He and others reportedly jumped into the sea and floated for several hours. Mr. Augustine and a few others were rescued by a team, but my husband and 10 others remain missing. We fear they may be in the custody of Houthi rebels,' Ms. Sheeja said. Mr. Anilkumar had joined the shipping firm after retiring from the Indian Army, where he served for 19 years. The family has sought the help of the Union and State governments to locate him.
