‘Felicity' actor Scott Speedman reveals his initial worry about Keri Russell's character

Dear Sally, Scott Speedman is spilling the tea. The 'Felicity' actor, 49, who played Ben Covington on the late '90s drama, revealed he didn't think his on screen love interest Felicity Porter should have been played by Keri Russell at first. 'I remember meeting you at the read-through a couple days later, and I thought clearly you were miscast,' Speedman told Russell, 49, during Variety's 'Actors on Actors' series on Friday. 'I saw you and I thought, [the character] was supposed to be this nerd. And I was like, 'The chick from 'Malibu Shores' is playing Felicity?'… How is that going to work?' Getty Images 'Felicity' ran for four seasons from 1998 to 2002 on the WB with Russell, Speedman, Scott Foley as Noah Crane, Tangi Miller as Elena Tyler and Greg Grunberg as Sean Blumberg. The series watched as Felicity decided to ditch premed life to follow her high school crush Ben to New York City. Along with the success of the show, the network also created a slew of other cult-classic teen dramas, including 'Dawson's Creek,' 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' 'Charmed' and 'One Tree Hill.' FilmMagic Two years prior to 'Felicity,' Russell landed her breakthrough role on NBC's 'Malibu Shores.' The primetime soap aired for one season in 1996 and starred Katie Wright, Randy Spelling, Christian Campbell, and Michelle Phillips. During their sit down, Russell reflected on the Aaron Spelling drama getting canceled early on, quipping to Speedman: 'That was a f–king good show.' 'I sent a tape down and got a call after a couple of days. They had to figure out how to get me into the country legally. Three days later I was in [the U.S.].' After touching down in America, Speedman met up with the show's creator. As he put it, 'I had dinner with J.J. Abrams that night.' ''Felicity' was such a sweet little something,' Russell mused. 'It was a really special time. We all grew up together and went through all that stuff.' 8 Keri Russell in the WB drama. ©Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection 'He made me audition,' Russell said of Abrams, 58. 'I think I read five times with a million other girls. He was so good to me in the auditions.' While talking to Entertainment Weekly for their 2015 Reunions Issue, 'The Diplomat' star got candid on that first audition for 'Felicity.' 'There were so many girls waiting to audition, I was like, 'Can I leave?' I got a couple of callbacks and then had a screen test and choked,' she shared. 'I'm such a bad auditioner… So I left, and J.J. and Matt chased me down and said, 'What happened? You have to come back in — you're too nervous.' I was like, 'Welcome to moi. Welcome to a life of this!'' 8 Scott Speedman, Keri Russell, Scott Foley in 'Felicity.' 'I still don't think I did amazing, but they let me have the part.' Foley, 52, also remembered how the audition went down for him. 'I had done the first season of 'Dawson's Creek' and the casting person knew who I was and called me in to read for the Ben role,' he said. 'Then I read for Noel. They called me back in for Ben and I tested that part two or three times. They cast me as Ben.' 8 Getty Images Advertisement 'I had wardrobe fittings and table readings and everything and then J.J. and Matt said, 'Hey we found someone we think is a great guy to play Ben.' I said, 'I'm Ben!' They asked if I would be interested in playing Noel instead, and I was so happy to have a job I said of course. Speedman showed up with a safety pin holding his shirt together and I said, 'You're right. He's perfect for Ben.''

Allison Janney Takes Command in THE DIPLOMAT Season 3 Trailer, and Things Just Got Nuclear — GeekTyrant

Netflix just dropped the teaser trailer for The Diplomat Season 3, and the Oval Office has a new tenant with the arrival of Allison Janney. Picking up right where Season 2's political chaos left off, the new season throws ambassador-turned-power player Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) into even deeper waters. Last season ended with President Rayburn dying moments after Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) tells him that Vice President Grace Penn (Janney) may have orchestrated a terrorist attack on a British warship. Now that Rayburn is out of the picture, Penn isn't just under suspicion, she's in charge. According to the official synopsis, 'Kate accusing Penn of hatching a terrorist plot and admitting she's after the vice president's job. But now the president is dead, Hal may have inadvertently killed him, and Penn is the leader of the free world. None of this slows Hal's campaign to land Kate the vice presidency. 'Kate steps into a role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected, an increasingly complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and an unnerving bond with First Gentleman Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford).' I love that Janney and Whitford are back together after their time together on The West Wing . The series also stars Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh. New faces include Celia Imrie, Michael McKean, Nana Mensah, and Miguel Sandoval. The series was created by Debora Cahn, who continues to steer the ship. I've enjoyed this show and Season 3 looks like it's setting up the kind of slow-burn power struggle. Season 3 lands this fall.

Keri Russell admits she's ‘still not sure' she wants to be an actress but ‘really loves' her job right now

Keri Russell creates magic on ordinary days. But that doesn't mean she's too tethered to the job title actress. In fact, Russell, 49, recently revealed how she views her career in Hollywood. 'I didn't grow up desperate to be an actress,' the star said while at the Hollywood Reporter's Drama Actress Roundtable. 'I'm still not sure I want to be. But I really love my job right now. There are a lot of things that are still embarrassing to me. I'm not a performer at ease.' Advertisement '[With] Matthew, for instance, I'll say, 'What are you doing this week?' And he'll go, 'Oh, I'm just going to do this play reading. I haven't done a German or Russian accent in a while and I just want to try it out,'' she revealed. 'That's my nightmare! I would f–king die. I don't want to f–king do that in front of strangers! For me, there's a real push-pull. I still have to overcome the obstacle of being nervous, but this version of TV that we're in works for me.' When the series wrapped, Russell left Los Angeles for New York and never moved back. 'I like my regular life,' she confessed at the roundtable. 'It's always such a funny thing when you see any big, super famous movie star. We've all worked with those people. I think [about how] they can't even go outside. They don't know what it's like to be a real person. They don't get their own coffee. They don't do their own laundry.' 'How do they play a real person? I don't want to talk shit too much about acting. I am completely married to the adventure of it, and that's what I'm in it for,' Russell added. Over the years, the 'Waitress' alum has had a slew of iconic roles. From 2013 to 2018, Russell played KGB spy Elizabeth Jennings opposite Rhys, 50, as her on-screen husband and fellow KGB spy, Phillip on the FX series 'The Americans.' Although she's worked in a variety of genres over the years, the Hollywood vet can't help but look back at typecasting that went on in the early days. As she put it, 'I went through a phase where it was just a nice pregnant mom. That was a Keri Russell type.'
