Comox councillor steps forward as leadership candidate for B.C. Greens
A Vancouver Island municipal official and family doctor has become the first person to announce their candidacy to replace Sonia Furstenau as the leader of the B.C. Greens, with a final vote set for mid-September. Jonathan Kerr is in the middle of his second term on Comox town council and has served as a family physician for the last 17 years, first in Ontario and now in B.C. He also serves as chair of the doctor recruitment task force for the Comox Valley and says the task force successfully brought 44 family physicians to the region between 2021 and 2024. In January of last year he said these efforts had reduced the number of local residents without a family doctor from 14,000 to 2,000. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. 'I am excited about the future of B.C., where housing is affordable, everyone has a family doctor, well-paying jobs are plentiful, the economy is strong, and we are protecting our forests and oceans,' Kerr said in a statement Wednesday. 'The B.C. Greens are the only party with the long-term approach needed to truly make our province more affordable, healthy and sustainable. The B.C. Greens have done a lot with just a few MLAs, but we can do a lot more if we grow our Caucus. I feel I have the experience and energy to make it happen.' According to his recently launched campaign website, Kerr has already received endorsements from former Green leader Jane Sterk, who led the party from 2007 to 2013, and fellow Comox councillor Jenn Meilleur. Both Green MLAs, interim leader Jeremy Valeriote of West Vancouver-Sea to Sky and Rob Botterell of Saanich-Gulf Islands, have declined to run in the leadership race, meaning that whoever takes the reigns of the party will be without a seat in the legislature and would either have to wait for an opportunity to run in a byelection or wait for the next provincial election, scheduled for October 2028. Furstenau resigned as leader in January after losing to NDP cabinet minister Grace Lore in the provincial election last October after having been leader since 2020 and handed the role to Valeriote on an interim basis. The deadline for candidates to submit their applications was June 14 and the deadline to sign up new members to vote in the contest is August 10. Voting will happen primarily online from Sept. 13 to Sept. 23 with the winner set to be announced on September 24.

Matildas star set for reunion with major move alongside new wife
Matildas fill-in captain Ellie Carpenter is on the verge of switching clubs for the first time in five years, with the move to complete a series of reunions. The 25-year-old joined French giants Lyon in 2020 but is set to be lured to England by none other than Australian teammate Sam Kerr's six-time defending champions Chelsea. Carpenter, who was under contract with Lyon for 2026, will depart the club just weeks after their Australian coach Joe Montemurro left to lead the Matildas. Carpenter will reportedly sign a three-year deal with Chelsea as part of an informal swap deal that has sent Canadian Ashley Lawrence, who previously played in France for Paris Saint-Germain, to Lyon. As well as teaming up with Kerr on the field, Carpenter will also be coached once again by her former Lyon boss Sonia Bompastor. Bompastor joined Chelsea last year after leading Carpenter and Lyon to three straight league titles while they also won the 2022 Champions League and made the 2024 final. The pair met when the Netherlands international star joined Lyon in 2021 and married last month in France. Just days after the wedding it was announced van de Donk had signed with the London City Lionesses for their first season in the top-flight Women's Super League. Lyon and the Lionesses, who are not affiliated with an English Premier League club, share the same owner. The announcement appeared to telegraph Carpenter's switch to England with Chelsea, which had already been floated as a rumour. If you'd like to view this content, please adjust your . Van de Donk's move to London will be a homecoming of sorts after she spent six years in the English capital with Arsenal prior to joining Lyon. Carpenter, meanwhile, will have at least one season alongside Kerr at Chelsea. But the star striker is firmly on the comeback trail and has attended two recent Matildas camps as a train-on player. Carpenter said it was a boost to have Kerr around the squad. 'She's a massive player, also a massive character for the team,' the fill-in skipper said late last month. 'She's been absent from the team for a while, so it's nice to have her training individually, and hopefully, soon she can be back with us.' Montemurro tapped Carpenter to lead the Matildas in his first two matches in charge, a 3-0 win and 1-1 draw against Slovenia over the past week. She was among several players to depart camp as part of a planned rotation ahead of matches against Panama over the next week. If you'd like to view this content, please adjust your . Gielnik's overseas move comes on the back of her return to the Australian squad under Montemurro, having been regularly overlooked in recent years. The 33-year-old scored the opening goal in the 3-0 win over Slovenia. 'A massive thank you to Melbourne Victory and everyone at the club for the continued support,' Gielnik wrote in a farewell post. 'I will miss playing in blue but I wish everyone at the club nothing but the best and good luck for the upcoming season.' Other Matildas on the lookout for new clubs include goalkeeper Teagan Micah, who is desperate for regular game time after only a handful of appearances for Liverpool before being let go recently. She has been touted as a potential signing for van de Donk's London City Lionesses.

Uncertainty over Tyrone's West Ham minor star Kerr for Sunday's final
Tyrone are hoping their West Ham United signee Joel Kerr will be available for Sunday's All-Ireland minor football final against Kerry in Newbridge. The 16-year-old starlet, whose move from Glentoran was confirmed in March, has been one of Tyrone's best performers in their campaign so far as they look to match their U20 All-Ireland success in May. However, there is some uncertainty around his unavailability. As of this month, he is contracted to the London Premier League club in a three-year deal. A member of The Rock St Patrick's club, Kerry scored one of Tyrone's two goals in their semi-final victory over Roscommon in Cavan last month. He was his side's top scorer in the Ulster final win over Cavan with 1-2 when he was named man of the match and kicked two points in the subsequent All-Ireland quarter-final win over Cork. Speaking in May, Kerr expressed his determination to concentrate on the minor team before pursuing a professional career. 'I'll worry about West Ham when it comes to it, I'll focus on this first. I've signed a one-year scholar, two-year pro, so I'll be there for three years. I want to take a good crack at it. I'll be in London, I'm going at the start of July.' Kerr signed with Glentoran academy in 2020 and the winger is considered Tyrone's strongest soccer talent since Liverpool's Conor Bradley who also excelled at Gaelic football with his club Aghyaran St Davog's. Question Time called out as Reform councillor on St Andrews panel
Thomas Kerr, a Glasgow councillor who defected from the Tories, is due to take part in the flagship debate programme on Thursday night from St Andrews. All of Reform UK's Scottish politicians are defectors from the Tories or Scottish Labour. They have not won an election north of the Border. Kerr will join Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, Tory MP Andrew Bowie and broadcaster Lesley Riddoch on the programme. READ MORE: Patrick Harvie and Angus Robertson face-off over Israel divestment A number of social media users pointed out that both the Scottish Greens and Scottish LibDems have more elected representatives than Reform, but are not as frequently platformed by the broadcaster. Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie said: 'Reform and the politics they represent are a direct threat to Scotland. We all saw what they were really about during the Hamilton by-election – where they ran a campaign of hate-fuelled prejudice and misinformation, showing themselves to be a racist, far-right party. 'Long before his rise in the opinion polls, the BBC gave Nigel Farage an extraordinarily high profile, as one of the most regular faces at the Question Time table. Now, they are doing the same in Scotland where his latest political vehicle has never had so much as a local councillor elected. 'It is frankly bizarre that the BBC has chosen to platform a representative of a party with zero electoral track record, and a party whose politics have been shown to be dishonest, divisive and dangerous.' Tomorrow, Question Time is in St Andrews Joining Fiona are Anas Sarwar, Andrew Bowie, Shirley-Anne Somerville, Thomas Kerr, and Lesley Riddoch 9pm on the @BBCNews channel, @BBCiPlayer and @BBCSounds, or @BBCOne at 10:40pm Apply now: — BBC Question Time (@bbcquestiontime) June 25, 2025 A spokesperson for the BBC said: 'Question Time is a national programme which must be relevant to audiences across the UK and reflect a wide range of political views. "We continue to seek a range of views when Question Time comes to Scotland and across this series, our panels have had representation from the various political parties, including the Scottish Greens and Liberal Democrats. 'We also take account of the most recent electoral performance and electoral movement since the election. "Reform have consistently polled strongly all across the UK and in a recent Scottish Parliamentary by-election (Hamilton, Rutherglen and Stonehouse), Reform polled 26% of the vote, and finished third, behind Labour and SNP.' Kerr's inclusion on the programme sparked a strong reaction online. SNP MSP James Dornan said: 'Once again we see the once unknown Tory councillor Thomas Kerr on BBC. I have no doubt at all that him deserting that sinking ship to join Reform had absolutely nothing to do with it of course.' Scottish Greens Glasgow councillor Jon Molyneux added: 'Thomas Kerr has more time for TV cameras than he does for his constituents. He's not contributed to a council meeting for six months. 'Too much like hard work or running scared? He should do the job taxpayers pay him for and open up his snake oil to proper scrutiny.' READ MORE: SNP MPs join Labour rebels in bid to kill off benefit cuts On social media user said: 'When was the last time, BBC Question Time had a 'councillor' from a political party? They are so desperate to platform Reform.' Another added: 'Reform, again. No elected representatives in Scotland, but let's promote them anyway at the expense of the other parties who do have elected politicians.' One said simply: 'Again where are the Liberal Democrats or the Greens, Might as well just call it the Reform show #bbcbias.' It comes as a new MRP poll from YouGov, released on Thursday morning, predicted Reform winning three Westminster seats in Scotland.
