D-backs (and Tigers) await news on Eugenio Suarez's hand

July 29 - There was plenty of drama during the first game of the Arizona-Detroit series on Monday night, though it had little to do with the outcome. The Tigers and Diamondbacks will play the second game of the three-game series on Tuesday evening in Detroit. The Diamondbacks and the many trade suitors for Eugenio Suarez got a huge scare in the ninth inning when the slugging third baseman was hit in the hand by a Will Vest pitch. Suarez said afterward that X-rays on his index finger were negative. He planned to have more tests on Tuesday. "Right now, it's painful, obviously. The good news is the X-ray was negative," he said postgame. "We'll see (Tuesday) what else they're going to do. Right now, I will do my best to try to be back soon." The Tigers are one of many teams reportedly interested in the services of Suarez, who is among the top five in the majors with 36 homers. Detroit won the series opener 5-1 and will seek a third straight victory following a six-game slide. The Tigers' roster is in flux. Outfielder Kerry Carpenter was activated from the injured list on Sunday. The team learned on Monday that starting pitcher Reese Olson would miss at least the remainder of the regular season with a shoulder injury, so the Tigers acquired Chris Paddack from the Minnesota Twins to replace him. Detroit also placed outfielder Parker Meadows on the IL with a quad issue. Andy Ibanez, who was recalled from Triple-A Toledo, gave the offense a spark with a double and solo homer Monday night. "I told (Ibanez) before the game, don't try to make up for lost time in one game," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. "So if that's his way of just settling in -- bam, double, homer. I know it means a lot to him. It crushed him to be sent down. But he went down, did his work and waited for the next opportunity." American League All-Star Casey Mize (9-4, 3.40 ERA), who is scheduled to start for the Tigers on Tuesday, has gotten roughed up in his past two starts. The right-hander allowed six runs in three innings to the Seattle Mariners just before the break, then yielded five runs (four earned) and 10 hits in four innings at Pittsburgh last Tuesday in an 8-5 loss. "I just look at myself and what I can do better," Mize said. "I think the role of the starting pitcher is so important, just setting the tone for the game and not having those guys on the field for too long." Mize, who will face the Diamondbacks for the first time, originally was scheduled to pitch on Monday. He was given an extra day of rest after experiencing some minor knee tightness. Right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (10-6, 4.76 ERA), Mize's mound opponent, has delivered three straight solid starts. He held the San Diego Padres to two runs in eight innings on July 9. In his first outing after the All-Star break, Pfaadt tossed seven scoreless innings against St. Louis. In his latest start, he was charged with two runs in 5 1/3 innings in his team's 4-3 loss to the Houston Astros on Wednesday. Pfaadt didn't give up a run in the first five innings but was pulled shortly after allowing back-to-back doubles in the sixth. "Ran into some trouble in the sixth, and (it) came back to bite us," said Pfaadt, who will face the Tigers for the first time in his career. "That's what's most disappointing." --Field Level Media

Detroit Tigers to place Kerry Carpenter on injured list with hamstring tightness

The Detroit Tigers will place Kerry Carpenter on the injured list for an aggravated hamstring, manager A.J. Hinch told MLB Network Radio on Tuesday morning. Hinch said Carpenter had an MRI on his right hamstring Monday, June 30, after he injured his hamstring against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday, June 29. With Carpenter, a left-handed hitter, out of the lineup, the Tigers will recall infielder Trey Sweeney, also a lefty, after he was just sent to Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, June 28. If it's the 10-day injured list for Carpenter, he could theoretically return July 11, but with All-Star break beginning Monday, July 14, it's possible the Tigers could keep Carpenter out of the lineup until Friday, July 18, when games resume. Hinch suggested the Tigers were being cautious even though the MRI didn't reveal significant damage. Carpenter has dealt with hamstring issues since early June and also was limited by it during the 2024 postseason. The Tigers slugger felt tightness in his hamstring in the fifth inning during the team's win against the Twins on Sunday. He was pulled from the game. He went 2-for-3, including a home run in the first inning, before he exited. MORE TIGERS NEWS: Detroit Tigers' Spencer Torkelson could come up short in MLB All-Star picks "It's really annoying," Carpenter told reporters Sunday. "But, man, everyone has been working hard on it. It's hard to put a finger on it, but we'll see how it goes from tonight on." Despite the hamstring issues, Carpenter is putting up another fine season toggling between the corner outfield spots and designated hitter. Despite a dip in batting average, slugging percentage and OPS, his power numbers are similar to last season. He has hit 16 home runs through 78 games; last season he hit 18 home runs in 87 total games. He'd been on an uptick the last five games, hitting three homers with six hits in 13 at-bats. Finally good news for Tigers: Kerry Carpenter is back, Trey Sweeney sent to Triple-A

Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch sent a text to Kerry Carpenter, who was on a rehab assignment. 'Call me after your game,' Hinch texted Saturday, July 26. Then, Carpenter hit a homer for Triple-A Toledo at Indianapolis before calling Hinch. 'First thing he told me is that he felt great,' Hinch said Sunday morning. Then Carpenter replied: 'What do you need?' Hinch said: 'We need you in the lineup.' So, the struggling Tigers brought Carpenter back to Detroit and sent shortstop Trey Sweeney to Toledo. Carpenter had a beaming, wide smile as he walked into the clubhouse early Sunday morning while pulling has luggage. 'We got a lot of good hitters on this team, so I'm excited to kind of be right back in the middle of it and see what we can start doing,' Carpenter said. Carpenter was immediately slotted into the batting order for Sunday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. He hasn't played for the Tigers since June 29 because of a hamstring injury. TRENDING: Tigers are historically bad right now. These 4 stats prove it 'Kerry has a huge presence on this team — the look of the lineup, the feel, the strategy, everything is better with Kerry Carpenter in it,' Hinch said. 'He's an immediate presence in the middle of the order against a right-handed pitcher. It sets things up extremely well.' Carpenter's return is great news for a team that has been struggling offensively — they have won just one time in their past 13 games. 'The worst is not being able to do anything to help,' Carpenter said. 'We got a bunch of good fighters on this team, and so whatever we can do to get out of this, I'm sure it's gonna come pretty quickly. I'm just excited to be in the middle of it and be back with these guys." Carpenter played four games for Toledo on a rehab assignment. On Saturday night, he went 1-for-4 with a homer. 'I feel good,' Carpenter said. 'I've been seeing the ball pretty good. ... I saw the ball pretty well and my swing was inconsistent a little bit but last night I felt really good.' The Tigers plan to bring Carpenter back slowly. MITCH ALBOM: Tigers may not have been as good as we thought, but can't be this bad either He is expected to be off on Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but will be in the lineup for the following two games. The Tigers have an off day on Thursday before visiting the Philadelphia Phillies for three games. 'He made a couple adjustments at the plate that made him feel better, both the line drives that he hit yesterday and the homer,' Hinch said. Sweeney's demotion was hardly a surprise for a batter hitting .208. 'He's got to get to work,' Hinch said. 'He's not playing enough to warrant the roster spot right now and how we were using him. He's got a lot of things that he's been working on.' [ MUST LISTEN: Talking trade deadline, Tarik Skubal's future with ex-MLB GM Jim Duquette. Gleyber Torres delivers 3-run bomb off Max Scherzer to snap Detroit Tigers' 6-game skid

Maybe it was the new Riley Greene mustache – an attempt to change the vibe for the struggling Detroit Tigers. Maybe it was the emotional lift that came from the return of Kerry Carpenter – he was out with a hamstring injury since June 29. Or maybe, far more likely, it was just guys playing a heck of a lot better. More like themselves. And exhaling. The Tigers rolled to a needed win thanks to excellent pitching (until the ninth inning, at least), solid defense and a massive game from Gleyber Torres, who had 4 RBIs. The Tigers snapped out of a funk and beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 10-4, at Comerica Park on Sunday, July 27. It broke a six-game losing streak for this team that had lost 12 of their last 13. TRENDING: Tigers are historically bad right now. These 4 stats prove it Welcome back, Max Former Tiger Max Scherzer turned 41 on Sunday and the birthday boy was dominant, except for one pitch to Torres. Scherzer struck out 11 in seven innings of work and didn't walk anybody. He scattered three hits, including a Torres 3-run homer. "He is a future Hall of Famer," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said about Scherzer before the game. "He's still pitching at a high level, so I don't want to love on him too much pregame because of the task that we have in front of us. But recognizing greatness that's right in front of you will only get sweeter over time." Hinch has a long history with Scherzer. Hinch was the Arizona farm director when the Diamondbacks drafted Scherzer in 2006. And Scherzer actually pitched in Hinch's first series as Arizona manager in 2009. 'I think it's always premature the first time you see someone to declare they are going to be among the baseball's greatest ever," Hinch said. But the DNA was there – the competitiveness, the intellectual curiosity, the competitiveness. "He was great then – he had a foundation for a career to build," Hinch said. A DOSE OF OPTIMISM: Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal reacts to all the losses: 'We're going to be better for it' That's the fact, Jack Jack Flaherty pitched his best game in over a month. Flaherty threw six shutout innings, striking out seven while scattering five hits. He had just one walk. It was his first scoreless appearance since he blanked the Chicago Cubs on June 8 in a 4-0 win. How big was this? After he finished the sixth inning, Flaherty didn't get the typical handshake from Hinch. He got the bro-hug in the dugout. Celebrate the Tigers' 125 epic seasons with our new book! But there was still plenty of drama for the Tigers. Tyler Holton entered the game in the seventh inning with the Tigers holding a 3-0 lead. But he got into instant trouble when Tyler Heineman doubled and Davis Schneider walked. After a fielder's choice, Hinch turned to Brenan Hanifee to face George Springer. And on the first pitch, Hanifee got Springer to line out to center to end the inning. One big swing For a second, it looked like the Tigers were going to blow a great chance to score in the third inning after Parker Meadows doubled to right, putting guys on second and third with no outs. But Javier Báez hit a soft, short fly to right and Dillon Dingler was unable to score from third. Then, Colt Keith hit a soft, looping fly to short left field but shortstop Bo Bichette had a fine over the shoulder catch, and Dingler didn't risk it. That left it up to Torres, who came through in the clutch, hitting his 10th homer of the season. The Tigers added plenty of insurance runs in the eighth inning, starting when Báez hit an RBI double to left, knocking in Parker Meadows. Then, Torres finished his huge day by knocking in another run. In all, the Tigers scored seven runs in their last frame, their first seven-run inning since May 12 against the Boston Red Sox. Mustache men Greene shaved his beard and arrived at the clubhouse with a mustache. "It's for the boys!" he said. And he convinced Spencer Torkelson to do the same. Then, in the eighth, Greene and Torkelson both had RBI singles to turn it into a rout, 7-0. And the fans were chanting: "Let's go, Tigers!" It was like everybody just relaxed. And Dingler turned it into a blowout, picking up two RBIs. Then, well, the Tigers bullpen fell apart in the ninth, giving up four runs. Right-handed reliever Luke Jackson, signed Saturday, July 26, made his Tigers debut in the ninth inning Sunday, allowing four runs on three walks and two hits while getting only two outs in mop-up duty. KERRY BONDS: Finally good news for Tigers: Kerry Carpenter is back, Trey Sweeney sent to Triple-A Fun stat of the day Even though the Tigers have been struggling, they still hold a fun stat. Can Kerry Carpenter's return help the Tigers get right?

DETROIT — Kerry Carpenter wheeled his suitcase through a set of double doors and entered the Detroit Tigers' clubhouse Sunday morning. You could practically feel the atmosphere in the room lighten. Here, finally, was good news. Here, finally, was real help. At his best, Carpenter is the Tigers' most dangerous left-handed hitter. He is a powerful chess piece, the queen on A.J. Hinch's managerial board. He's a hitter opposing managers target, a player who can enter a game off the bench or get flipped for a pinch hitter in a crucial spot. Advertisement 'The look of the lineup, the feel, the strategy, everything is better with Kerry Carpenter in it,' Hinch said. Carpenter's presence was sorely missed during a brutal stretch in which the Tigers lost 12 of 13 games. Really, it's been missing since the start of June, when Carpenter was playing through a hamstring injury and clearly wasn't right. He hasn't drawn a walk since May 23, and he hit .194 after June 3. Carpenter finally went on the injured list July 2 after tweaking the right hamstring again. The All-Star break provided a clear time for a reset. Carpenter worked his way back. Said he began feeling better quickly. He went on a rehab assignment, took a couple of games to find his timing and his mechanics. Before Saturday's game in Triple A, Hinch texted Carpenter. 'Call me after your game,' he wrote. Carpenter ended up connecting on a pair of line drives and hit a home run Saturday. Afterward, he called his manager. Told him he was feeling good. He asked Hinch what he needed to see next. 'We need you in the lineup,' Hinch told him. Sunday morning, Carpenter was back in Detroit, back at his locker and back in the middle of the Tigers' order. 'That's the worst, is not being able to do anything to help,' Carpenter said of the Tigers' losing streak. 'We got a bunch of good hitters on this team. Whatever we can do to get out of this, I'm sure it's gonna come pretty quickly. I'm just excited to be in the middle of it and be back with these guys.' Carpenter's arrival proved to be a harbinger of good things Sunday. In the series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Tigers won 10-4 and snapped a six-game losing streak. Jack Flaherty was in sync, commanding his stuff with precision and mixing his arsenal to devastating results. He threw six scoreless innings and even ended the day by pumping a 96.1 mph fastball — tied for his fastest pitch this season — past Ernie Clement. GL3YB3R TORR3S 💣 — Detroit Tigers (@tigers) July 27, 2025 Flaherty was able to pitch with the lead because Gleyber Torres hit a three-run home run in the third inning. The Tigers had started the inning getting hits from Dillon Dingler and Parker Meadows. Javier Báez and Colt Keith followed with two flyouts, both too shallow to score Dingler from third. So there with two outs, Torres was in the midst of an 0-for-16 slump. The hitter who has been a consistent contributor all season then delivered the big swing his team has been waiting for. With Carpenter lurking behind him in the order, Torres launched a challenge fastball from Max Scherzer high over the opposite-field wall. Advertisement Again, you could practically feel the exhale reverberating from the dugout up through the Comerica Park stands. Scherzer still shut down the Tigers, retiring his final 13 batters. But the lineup came alive in the eighth inning, good at-bats strung together like this team has not done for the bulk of July. The Tigers scored seven runs, six coming with two outs. 'It feels like we hadn't seen that in a while, right?' Hinch said. 'We really had a hard time showing our identity and what we're about when we're not collecting hits.' A small detail to consider: Carpenter's presence forced the Blue Jays to bring in left-hander Justin Bruihl with two outs in the eighth. Hinch inserted right-hander Matt Vierling, who singled, in Carpenter's place. After a base hit from Riley Greene, the Tigers had a run of favorable matchups against the lefty and kept upping the number on the scoreboard. Carpenter went 0-for-3 Sunday, but his return will play a large role in the Tigers' quest to get back to their winning identity. 'Kerry's presence matters,' Hinch said. 'It changes how they navigate our lineup. He's a really big threat. It plays into how Gleyber is getting pitched because Kerry's a threat. When you can impact a game and not necessarily be the feature of a game, that's a middle-of-the-order bat. … Our lineup just looks different and functions differently with him in it.'
