Any Other Marvel Fans Worried About Kevin Feige's Comments About The MCU's Future?
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. In this day and age, we live in a world where Marvel surrounds us. Whether it is upcoming Marvel movies or maybe upcoming Marvel TV shows, there's a lot to look forward to in the MCU. But I have to admit something to you all – I'm a little concerned about the future of Marvel after what Kevin Feige just said regarding recasting old heroes. I'm the kind of person who really loves new ideas and stories, so revisiting old ones never really sat right with me. However, I want to get into the why in this article, so let's dive deep. It Has Been Hard To Adjust, But I've Been Liking The New Heroes If you're wondering what the quote was, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige spoke to Variety in July 2025 and said that eventually, they would 'recast' characters like Tony Stark and Captain America. He compared it to other major franchises that recast roles as time goes on, like James Bond and Superman. Recasting characters, in and of itself, is fine. I'm not going to be the person who gets up on her soapbox and says that we can't recast characters at all. I know how the world works, and I'm not about to get cancelled for that. But it's the messaging behind it as well as what we've already established in this world. I'm not going to lie – it was hard to adjust to all the new heroes that we were given over the last couple of years, ever since Avengers: Endgame. There have been numerous changes in structure, as well as speculation about who will become the next big villain and who won't. I have to admit, now that I'm here, I love the new heroes. Thunderbolts* depicted depression so wonderfully and was one of the best MCU films in a long time, featuring some incredible acting and storytelling from several new and returning characters who played much larger roles within the MCU. I also have loved that older characters have gotten more chances to shine. I'm the biggest supporter of Wanda having her time in the sun and all of those kick-butt Scarlet Witch instances. But when it comes to recasting those old heroes – the ones that we've grown so used to – it doesn't feel great, I'll tell you that. Recasting The Old Heroes Within This MCU Feels Like A Huge Step Back As I said in the section above, I'm not opposed to recasting overall. I don't mind it if it's done with intention, and it isn't just an excuse to make more money off of a new character. We've had three different recasts of Spider-Man at this point, and everyone still debates who the best Spider-Man is. This is essentially how Hollywood works. However, the issue I have with this kind of recasting is that it creates a singular universe. Sure, we have been made aware that there are millions of variants of the same character. We saw that at length, when it came to Loki. But at the same time, it feels like a stab in the back to recast a character when their stories have already come to an end. This feels worse than bringing back Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. It feels like it somehow tarnishes the legacy of Tony Stark. The story of his character was complete, and honestly, we don't need to see his character recast again in this same universe for us to love him still. He is, and will always be, Tony Stark. So, the idea of recasting him – even if it is a long time away – feels like a slap in the face to those who not only love his interpretation of the character but also the story of him as a whole, with the movies we've watched. The same goes for Steve, Natasha, Thor – everyone. How Are We Going to Explore New Characters and Stories If We're Revisiting the Same Ones? This is something else that worries me. Do you know how many heroes are in the Marvel line-up? There are a ridiculous number. Hundreds, if not thousands. How are we going to explore new heroes if we keep looking at the ones everyone knows? How are we going to build new fan bases if we continue to focus on the characters that Marvel insists we do? Let me tell you – I knew next to nothing about Ironheart, otherwise known as Riri Williams. I didn't know who she was or what she stood for. But you want to know what turned me onto her? The Ironheart TV show was great. Now, I have a new favorite character. Would I have been able to experience that if the show had been featured around Tony? No, because it would have been the same character that we all already know. Recasting characters takes away the chance to introduce new ones to the world. And in the world of Marvel, there are so many we could get into. Another character I ended up loving more this time around was Yelena, played by Florence Pugh. She's become one of my favorites, but she didn't appear until after Avengers: Endgame. If she had been around the same time as Natasha, she probably would have been overshadowed. I want these characters to survive on their own, not to become just sidekicks to recast characters that we all already know. What Does This Mean For The Multiverse? Is It Just Going To Forever Expand? And this is the biggest thing – if we're recasting characters within this MCU, what does that mean for the Marvel Multiverse as a whole? Are we recasting them as if they were variants from another planet, and that's how they're infused back into the story? Or are we just not bothering with that anymore and just throwing them right back into the ringer in order to take on the next big baddie? I don't know. To me, it sounds like this universe really is just never going to stop expanding, and now Marvel Studios might just be using this as an excuse to bring back these characters. That's where this really suffers. The only way to truly make this work is if they completely redo the entire universe. Start from the very beginning because then, there will be that exact distinction of who plays who and what universe we are in. If not, all of this sounds like a confusing mess. Things like this really make me wonder what Marvel will do in the future. I've been an avid Marvel supporter over the last few years, particularly with some of their releases, from a personal favorite of mine, Agatha: All Along, to their latest release, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. But recasting these characters might be where I draw the line. Only time will tell. I'm sure we'll see more in the next Avengers film. Until then, I'll enjoy my MCU movie marathons and live in the good old days of simple movies and fewer multiverses. Solve the daily Crossword

The MCU's X-Men Reboot Will Be More "Youth-Oriented" Take
Despite the X-Men not arriving in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) until at least 2028, after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) have taken place, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has already disclosed more details on his plans to recast the X-Men and other key characters in the MCU, expressing that the reborn X-Men team will go in a 'very youth-oriented' direction this time. (L-R) Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian (David Harbour), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) and John Walker (Wyatt Russell) in Marvel Studios' THUNDERBOLTS*. Photo by Chuck Zlotnick. © 2025 MARVEL. 'Jake's going to make a youth-focused reboot. That may be reflected in mutant castings, and it'll definitely be felt in the tone and perspective of the film,' Feige said. Feige seems keen to get an early start on the project, with development already underway. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023) screenwriter Michael Lesslie has been confirmed to be penning the screenplay, and Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier has also recently been tapped to spearhead the project. On his choice to pick Schreier to helm the project, Feige expressed how he was impressed with what Schreier did to appeal to the sensibilities of younger demographics. He said, 'We had a great experience with [Schreier] on Thunderbolts , and if you saw that movie, what he did with those character interactions — he also has his pulse on, shall we say, a younger demographic. Not—he's younger than me, for sure—but he's tapped into that in a way that I think is important.' In that same interview with Nerdist, Feige emphasises how vital it was for their choice of director to have this connection with a younger audience, stating, 'It was important for Thunderbolts, much more important for X-Men, because X-Men, as it was in the comics, will be a very youth-oriented, focused and cast movie.' In a chat with The Playlist, when asked if the new reboot would be recognisably different from previous iterations, Schreier reinforced that the MCU's reboot of the X-Men would likely be distinct from the ones previously shown onscreen in 20th Century Fox's X-Men films, despite Fox's own younger reboot via the First Class line of prequels. Halle Berry's Storm, Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier, Fan Bingbing's Blink, Ian McKellen's Magneto and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) The X-Men film franchise has been chock-full of big names such as Patrick Stewart ( Star Trek: Picard ) who played Charles Xavier / Professor X, Ian McKellen ( The Hobbit trilogy) who played Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto, James Marsden ( Sonic the Hedgehog film series) who played Scott Summers / Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer ( Frasier ) who played Hank McCoy / Beast, Rebecca Romijn ( Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ) who played Mystique, and Alan Cumming ( The Traitors ) who played Nightcrawler, who are all set to reprise their roles in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday (2027). The franchise has also boasted renowned actors the likes of Hugh Jackman ( The Greatest Showman ) who recently reprised his role as Logan / Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), Halle Berry ( The Union ) who played Ororo Munroe / Storm, Famke Janssen ( How to Get Away with Murder ) who played Jean Grey / Phoenix, Elliot Page ( Umbrella Academy ) who played Kitty Pryde, Shawn Ashmore ( The Rookie ) who played Bobby Drake / Iceman and Vinnie Jones ( MacGyver ) who played Cain Markok / Juggernaut in its original line of films. Olivia Munn's Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) This is on top of the rebooted First Class line of prequels that also featured an impressive lineup of high-profile actors like James McAvoy ( Split ) as Charles Xavier / Professor X, Michael Fassbender ( The Killer ) as Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence ( The Hunger Games trilogy) as Raven / Mystique, Nicholas Hoult ( Superman ) as Hank McCoy / Beast, Evan Peters ( Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story ) as Peter Maximoff / Quicksilver, Lucas Till ( MacGyver ) as Alex Summers / Havok, Sophie Turner ( Game of Thrones ) as Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan ( Ready Player One ) as Scott Summers / Cyclops, Ben Hardy ( Bohemian Rhapsody ) as Angel, Alexandra Shipp ( Tick, Tick… Boom! ) as Ororo Munroe / Storm, Lana Condor ( To All the Boys film series) as Jubilee, and Olivia Munn ( The Predator ) as Psylocke. Sophie Turner's Jean Grey, Kodi Smit-McPhee's Nightcrawler and Tye Sheridan's Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) While there's no news of casting yet, any of the new and younger actors set to take over the reins of the X-Men in the MCU will certainly have massive shoes to fill. But until then, fans can only continue to speculate and discuss their favourite fancastings. Given how fan castings and cries for John Krasinski to play Reed Richards ultimately led to his brief appearance as Mister Fantastic in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness , who knows? Maybe Marvel Studios may heed fans after all. Kevin Feige Teases a Major ‘Avengers: Doomsday' Location
'The fun of an Avengers movie is introducing people to each other and seeing how very different personalities get along,' says Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios. 'In the case of a movie that involves the threat of worlds literally colliding, it's fun to see them visit each other's homes.' Feige was speaking to the official Marvel website about The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which is now in theaters. It's the final piece of the puzzle before Avengers: Doomsday comes out in December 2026, and Feige confirmed that the home of the Fantastic Four won't just play a role; it'll be a central meeting spot for Earth's Mightiest Heroes. 'With the Baxter Building set, let's say it had four or five people in it at most in the Fantastic Four movie. And it's got a heck of a lot more people in it [in Doomsday],' Feige said. 'It's a thrill to see that interaction. And it's surreal for me, who's been around for 25 years.' So now we know that several Avengers, or potentially their nemeses, are going to be all together in the Baxter Building. But this raises some questions, does it not? The Baxter Building as seen in Fantastic Four exists on Earth 828, the home of the Fantastic Four. In that multiverse/timeline/dimension, the Fantastic Four are the only superheroes. So, presuming Reed Richards doesn't build a second Baxter Building, it seems that other heroes from Marvel will travel to that timeline. How does that happen? Who is able to do that? Why do they do that? Is all the action in the film on Earth 828 but not Earth 616, the home of the traditional MCU, which includes Captain America, the Thunderbolts, Thor, and more? That might make sense, as we presume 828 is where Doctor Doom is from, as seen in the end credits of Fantastic Four. But surely he has more on his mind than just this one universe. Adding to the mystery is the other piece of the Doomsday puzzle we have. That the Thunderbolts saw a ship with a giant '4' on it enter space around Earth 616. So, is that before all this? After? We don't know. What we do know, for a fact now, is that multiple characters in Avengers: Doomsday will convene in the Baxter Building of the Fantastic Four. Let the speculation begin. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is now in theaters. Avengers: Doomsday is now filming and will be released December 18, 2026. Want more io9 news? Marvel's X-Men director says the new movie will be ‘recognizably different' from the Hugh Jackman franchise
Following the premiere of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the X-Men are the last major set of characters who have not yet been interested into the Marvel universe. Now that we know Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier will be helming this new version of the X-Men, though, he's offered some detail on what the movie will look like in an interview with The Playlist. When he was asked if Marvel's take on the characters will be 'recognizably different' from the previous franchise, Schreier said 'yeah, I think that's fair to say,' before joking that there was red sniper dot pointed at his chest. Recommended Videos 'But to be able to explore all of the ideas that are inherent to that rich source material, but also at the scale inherent to the source material, that's like a very rare and fortunate opportunity,' the director continued. 'That's very exciting.' Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, said during a previous interview that Marvel's take on the characters would be quite different, explaining that they were 'going to make a youth-focused reboot. That may be reflected in mutant castings, and it'll definitely be felt in the tone and perspective of the film.' We don't yet know what the introduction of the X-Men is going to look like in the MCU. What we do know, though, is that Marvel is bringing back much of the cast of the original X-Men franchise for an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday. Whether any of them will have significant roles remains to be seen.
