Tigers top prospects promoted: Kevin McGonigle, Max Clark, Josue Briceño to Double-A Erie
Here comes the future. First stop, Erie. Later this week, the Futures Game. Detroit Tigers prospects Kevin McGonigle, Max Clark and Josue Briceño have been promoted from High-A West Michigan to Double A Erie. They are expected to make their Erie debut at Harrisburg on Tuesday, July 8. Advertisement Then, the spotlight will only get brighter for this talented trio. All three have been selected to play in the All-Star Futures Game on Saturday, July 12, at Truist Park in Atlanta, a showcase of the top prospects in baseball. Detroit Tigers prospect Kevin McGonigle practices during spring training at TigerTown in Lakeland on Friday, Feb. 20, 2025. McGonigle, Clark and Briceño are the Tigers top-three prospects who are healthy, considering shortstop Bryce Rainer underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in June. McGonigle, a 20-year-old shortstop, is ranked the No. 7 prospect by MLB Pipeline. He hit .372 with a 1.110 OPS in 36 games at West Michigan. Said MLB Pipeline: 'McGonigle might have the best hit tool in the minors and has been a double machine when healthy this season.' Advertisement INSIDER: One story about Kevin McGonigle sheds insight into why he's different 'He's really good at baseball,' Whitecaps manager Tony Cappuccilli told the Free Press on June 14. 'I mean, he's a special player. He makes everybody around him better. He just plays the game the right way. He knows where to be and wants to be coached. If he does something wrong and had another option, then he wants to hear it. He wants to get better. It's not just show up and throw the glove on and strap on the batting gloves — he wants to be coached. He wants to learn and he wants to know if he had other options in different situations throughout the game. So, he's invested in becoming a great player and playing for a long time.' Detroit Tigers prospect Max Clark gets ready for practice during spring training at TigerTown in Lakeland, Fla. on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2025. Clark, 20, is ranked the No. 12 prospect by MLB Pipeline. He went through a slump earlier this season, but he is hitting .285 with a .430 on base percentage at West Michigan. Advertisement 'He's played incredible center field for us,' Cappuccilli said. 'So just he's definitely grown in terms of how he handles success and failure.' INSIDER: Max Clark shows maturity, growth dealing with 'failure moments' Briceño, 20, is ranked No. 58 by MLB Pipeline. He has jacked 15 homers with a .296 batting average in 55 games for the Whitecaps. Detroit Tigers prospect Josue Briceño bats at practice during spring training at TigerTown in Lakeland on Friday, Feb. 20, 2025. While Briceño has showed impressive power, it has been his defense at catcher that has been the most pleasant surprise. 'He wants to be a catcher,' Cappuccilli told the Free Press. 'He walks around like a catcher. He carries himself like a catcher.' Advertisement He has improved his receiving and his throwing has impressed Cappuccilli. 'It's really been a pleasant surprise,' Cappuccilli said. 'You see him getting more and more comfortable. He's exceeded our expectations back there, both with his desire to be back there and his improvement. The questions he asked are good questions. He's engaged in what he's doing. I mean, he carries himself like a catcher. So it's been a lot of fun.' In June, Cappuccilli was asked what it is like to coach this talented team in West Michigan. ANALYSIS: He's no All-Star (yet) but Zach McKinstry is the fuel that makes Tigers purr Advertisement "It's an incredible group of guys," Cappuccilli said. "They are great players — that's a given. People always ask, 'Oh, what's gonna happen when these guys move on to Erie?' "I know I'm gonna miss the guys. I'll miss them in the clubhouse. Obviously writing their names in the lineup is nice, but the quality of character of the guys that we have here is amazing. Not only are they getting good players, but they are good people, and they want to win. They're not happy when they lose." Contact Jeff Seidel: jseidel@ Follow him on X @seideljeff. MLB Futures Game primer: The top hitters Jim Bowden can't wait to watch
Front offices from all 30 teams will be scouting the young talent at the Futures Game on Saturday at Truist Park in Atlanta. Many of the game's top prospects will be playing in the annual showcase, which features an American League versus National League format. The best part of the Futures Game, to me, has always been the ability to evaluate and compare some of the most talented hitting prospects with one another. You also can learn so much about their personalities just by being around them and studying their batting and infield practice and how they interact with each other. Advertisement It gives me an up-close look at their mechanics, bat path, set up, how balanced they are, bat speed, launch angle and sweet-spot contact — in batting practice and in the game. This year's roster is loaded with special future major-league bats — and I'm excited to see them all. But here is a breakdown of the top hitters I'm most looking forward to scouting on Saturday. (Jim Bowden's scouting grades are based on the 20-80 scale, in which 20-30 is well below average, 40 is below average, 50 is average, 60 is above average and 70-80 is well above average. All statistics are for the 2025 season unless otherwise noted.) The AL hitting prospects are highlighted by a pair of Tigers who are future top-of-the-lineup table-setters: speedy center fielder Max Clark and infielder Kevin McGonigle, who makes contact at an elite level. Mariners fans want more offense for their major-league team and they have a possible impact bat on the way in outfielder Lazaro Montes. I'm also excited to see Jaden Montgomery, the future right fielder of the White Sox, who was acquired from Boston in the Garrett Crochet trade, and George Lombard Jr., the Yankees' top prospect, who is the son of former major leaguer and current Tigers bench coach George Lombard. Age: 20 Bats: L Throws: L Height: 6-0 Weight: 205 Stats (High A/Double A): .280/.422/.428 2B: 12 HR: 8 RBI: 48 SB: 12 CS: 2 Scouting grades: HIT: 60 PWR: 50 RUN: 65 ARM: 60 FLD: 60 With his ability to get on-base and create damage on the basepaths, Clark profiles as a future leadoff hitter. He's an elite defender in center field with a strong arm. I'm looking forward to seeing if Clark, the third-overall pick in 2023, has added strength and improved his launch angle, which should lead to more power and help him reach his true potential. Advertisement Age: 20 Bats: L Throws: R Height: 5-10 Weight: 187 Stats (Low A/High A/Double A): .345/.438/.591 2B: 21 HR: 7 RBI: 39 SB: 3 CS: 5 Scouting grades: HIT: 70 PWR: 50 RUN: 55 ARM: 50 FLD: 50 McGonigle, the No. 37 pick in 2023, has quickly become one of the best hitting prospects in baseball, with many evaluators believing he will win a batting title someday. He has terrific plate discipline and special bat-to-ball skills. He owns the strike zone and rarely chases. His ability to hit velocity, breaking balls and changeups equally well could mean he'll be quick to the major leagues. I can't wait to see him consistent sweet-spot contact — both in BP and in the game. Age: 20 Bats: L Throws: R Height: 6-5 Weight: 210 Stats (High A/Double A): .269/.387/.584 2B: 13 HR: 23 RBI: 61 SB: 4 CS: 1 Scouting grades: HIT: 55 PWR: 70 RUN: 35 ARM: 50 FLD: 35 There is nothing I love more than ridiculous left-handed raw power — and that's what Montes possesses. His bat speed gives me goosebumps. The loft he gets from his swing makes you believe he'll develop into a 25- to 30-home run hitter. He does have some swing-and-miss in his game, which will lead to a hefty number of punchouts, but he'll also take his walk to offset the deficiency. He's a below-average defender who can't run, so if he isn't good enough to play left field, he could end up as a full-time designated hitter. However, his bat and power will get him to The Show and he's a fascinating study in the batter's box. Age: 22 Bats: B Throws: R Height: 6-2 Weight: 220 Stats (Low A/High A): .261/.347/.447 2B: 18 HR: 11 RBI: 52 SB: 10 CS: 3 Scouting grades: HIT: 50 PWR: 60 RUN: 50 ARM: 65 FLD: 50 I was fortunate to interview Montgomery last year during our SiriusXM draft coverage and was blown away by his makeup and baseball IQ. Drafted 12th overall by Boston before being one of the prospect headliners in the Crochet blockbuster, Montgomery is off to a solid start to his career in terms of his on-base skills, power, base stealing and defense. (He's a plus defender in right field.) His swing is quick and straight to the ball from both sides of the plate, and his power is foul pole to foul pole. He's a slightly above-average runner but has the instincts to be a well-above-average base runner. Advertisement Age: 20 Bats: R Throws: R Height: 6-2 Weight: 190 Stats (High A/Double A): .239/.382/.356 2B: 16 HR: 3 RBI: 30 SB: 25 CS: 4 Scouting grades: HIT: 50 PWR: 50 RUN: 55 ARM: 55 FLD: 55 Lombard is a shortstop by trade and has mostly played that position since being drafted 26th overall in 2023, but the Yankees have also played him at second and third base, which gives them flexibility to promote him to the majors once his bat is ready. He started this season at High A and earned a promotion to Double A in early May. I've been impressed with his on-base skills (.382 OBP) and his ability to steal bases almost at will in the first half. He has a ways to go, but the Yankees' major-league lineup could really use that type of traffic production. The National League is even more loaded with hitters than the AL squad, so it was really difficult to narrow my list to just five players. I can't wait to watch the Pirates' Konnor Griffin, who could become the best prospect in the game, and Cardinals infielder JJ Wetherholt, a pure hitter who looks like he will be quick to The Show. Carson Benge of the Mets is perhaps the most underrated prospect in this game. And Marlins catcher Joe Mack and Cubs outfielder Owen Caissie both could be dealt at the trade deadline, so Saturday offers another opportunity to assess their trade value and the type of players they could help their respective organizations acquire. Some of the NL hitters who did not make this list but who I will prioritize seeing include Padres shortstop Leo De Vries, Rockies power hitter Charlie Condon and Dodgers outfielders Zyhir Hope and Josue De Paula. Age: 19 Bats: R Throws: R Height: 6-4 Weight: 225 Stats (Low A/High A): .327/.400/.521 2B: 16 HR: 13 RBI: 53 SB: 41 CS: 9 Advertisement Scouting grades: HIT: 60 PWR: 60 RUN: 70 ARM: 70 FLD: 60 Griffin could end up being the 'steal' of the 2024 draft at No. 9 as he is showing early signs of becoming a future superstar. He has played mostly shortstop this year but also has played 10 games in center field, and he's capable of playing both positions. He is making adjustments rapidly and proving to be a quick learner. He is the ultimate five-tool athlete, with a combination of elite hitting and power. He has the potential to be a 30-30 (homers, steals) or maybe even a 40-40 type of offensive juggernaut. He's the hitter I'm most looking forward to seeing at the Futures Game. Age: 22 Bats: L Throws: R Height: 5-10 Weight: 190 Stats (Double A/Triple A): .303/.425/.487 2B: 15 HR: 8 RBI: 36 SB: 14 CS: 2 Scouting grades: HIT: 65 PWR: 50 RUN: 60 ARM: 50 FLD: 50 Wetherholt was one of my favorite hitters taken in last year's draft (No. 7) and I was even more impressed with him during spring training, when he was in major-league camp with the Cardinals in Jupiter, Fla. The left-handed hitter has a smooth clean swing with tremendous bat-to-ball skills that include great peripheral vision. He makes consistent sweet-spot contact, stays in the strike zone and draws walks. His exit velocity is All-Star caliber and he's a well-above-average runner who can steal bases. To me, he looks like he could play second base in the big league right now if he wasn't blocked by All-Star Brendan Donovan. I can't wait to see him again, to try to find a weakness with his bat. I haven't found one yet. Age: 22 Bats: L Throws: R Height: 6-1 Weight: 184 Stats (High A/Double A): .302/.422/.485 2B: 21 HR: 6 RBI: 44 SB: 17 CS: 2 Scouting grades: HIT: 60 PWR: 50 RUN: 55 ARM: 60 FLD: 55 The underrated Benge is having a tremendous, consistent season at the plate in terms of average and on-base percentage. He has elite gap-to-gap doubles power that should translate into more home runs as he develops. He has a knack for driving in runs and can steal bags, with above-average instincts for the game in general. He hits with an open stance and has strong bat-to-ball skills, making consistent sweet-spot contact. He can stay in center field but is capable of playing both corners as well, with a strong right-field rifle of an arm. I can't wait to see him hit in person, especially his raw power in batting practice. Advertisement Age: 22 Bats: L Throws: R Height: 6-0 Weight: 210 Stats (Double A/Triple A): .272/.350/.460 2B: 14 HR: 11 RBI: 36 SB: 5 CS: 3 Scouting grades: HIT: 50 PWR: 55 RUN: 40 ARM: 60 FLD: 55 Mack has developed into the complete package behind the plate. He's a strong game-caller, frames well and has thrown out 41 percent of the runners attempting to steal this season. He's made great strides as a hitter and should be ready for a September call-up this year. He could be used as trade bait in a potential deal with the Tampa Bay Rays, Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix's former team, especially if they're able to acquire the right young starting pitcher in return. Age: 23 Bats: L Throws: R Height: 6-3 Weight: 190 Stats (Triple A): .278/.386/.575 2B: 20 HR: 19 RBI: 42 SB: 3 CS: 2 Scouting grades: HIT: 50 PWR: 60 RUN: 50 ARM: 60 FLD: 50 Caissie is one of the most-talked-about prospects in the game as we approach the trade deadline. He is blocked in Chicago — the Cubs have a strong outfield with Kyle Tucker, Pete Crow-Armstrong, Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki — and most front offices believe Caissie will be the top prospect dealt if they can trade for an impact starter or reliever. He's worked hard to become an average defender in the outfield, improving both his reads and angles to the ball. He profiles as a No. 5-type hitter in the lineup more than he does a No. 3- or 4-type producer. I'm eager to see him and further assess what his trade value should be — just in case he is dealt over the next few weeks. (Top photo of Max Clark: Mike Janes / Four Seam Images via Associated Press)

Three Tigers Prospects Dominate, Get Promoted Together to Double-A
Three Tigers Prospects Dominate, Get Promoted Together to Double-A originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Tigers have the best record in baseball, a double-digit division lead, a lineup without an easy out and possibly the back-to-back AL Cy Young award winner. Advertisement There are still more reinforcements coming. Three of Detroit's highest ranked prospects were all promoted together from High-A level ball to the Tigers Double-A affiliate, the Erie SeaWolves. Kevin McGonigle, Max Clark and Josue Briceño all got the call to move up at the same time, keeping together a core that is sure to impact the Major League club soon. Tigers prospect Kevin McGonigle during spring training© Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK McGonigle, the Tigers' number one overall prospect in MLB's rankings, is a fast middle-infielder with a high exit velo at the plate that should translate into power numbers. High-A was no match for him, slashing a .372/.462/.648 over 36 games this year. He has also had more walks than strikeouts at every level in his career. Advertisement Clark, Detroit's number two overall prospect, earned his promotion through blazing fast speed and rocket arm, both serving him well playing center field everyday. His 70 rating on the 20-80 scouting scale puts him amongst the elite in the majors. He also topped out at a 98.1 mph throw from the outfield, almost a full 2 mph faster than the hardest Detroit major-leaguer throw last season. Briceño, ranked fourth overall in the Tigers' system, was signed out of Maracay, Venezuela in 2022, the same hometown as Tigers' legend Miguel Cabrera. Like Miggy, Briceño is a strong, power hitter that won a triple crown, even if it was the Arizona Fall League, instead. With an OPS over 1.000 and 57 RBIs over 55 games, he showed he is ready to be a slugger against tougher competition. All three of these guys have shown so much potential and are only 20 years old. If they play well enough, the franchise will have no choice to keep moving them up. Or trade them. Advertisement Just one of these guys as the main piece of a package could net the Tigers someone who alters a pennant race. Should the front office want to go all-in and see what a combination of these three would get them, there are not many players around the league off limits. Detroit Tigers' Trio Leads Prospect-Packed 2025 All-Star Futures Game
Kevin McGonigle, Max Clark and Josue Briceno have hit the West Michigan Whitecaps into Midwest League dominance this season. The trio of 20-year-old Detroit Tigers prospects will be on display in the 2025 All-Star Futures Game in Atlanta. MLB Pipeline ranks infielder McGonigle as the Tigers' No. 1 prospect, outfielder Clark at No. 2 and catcher/first baseman Briceno at No. 4. All hit left-handed and really well. The National League has eight organization top-ranked players. McGonigle, described as 'an absolute pure hitter' by a member of the Tigers organization, has been just that in his first 137 games as a professional, batting .325 with power, speed, and great strike-zone command. Drafted in the first round, No. 37 overall, in 2023 out of high school, McGonigle got $2,847,500 to sign. He hit .315 in 21 games across two levels that summer and .309 in 74 games across two levels at age 19 last year. He sprained his right ankle in the 2025 season opener and missed several weeks. In 36 games at High-A West Michigan, he's hitting .372 with 7 homers, 39 RBI. McGonigle has drawn 90 walks and struck out 58 times as a pro with 33 stolen bases. He has played mostly shortstop, though many scouts believe he is better suited for second base. His bat should find him a place in any lineup in the future. In 197 pro games, he has 46 steals in 53 tries and several highlight-reel catches in center field. He has 37 doubles and 18 homers, too. He is considered a good defensive option in center, which is so important in playing the Tigers' massive Comerica Park outfield. Some scouts believe that as he matures, he could develop power that would make him a true star. Briceno has plenty of power. He has hit 15 homers with 55 RBI in 54 games at West Michigan in 2025. The only player to win the award in his 'home' ballpark was catcher Hank Conger of the Los Angeles Angels in 2010 after hitting a three-run homer. A first-round pick in 2006, Conger had few other career highlights. He hit .293 over parts of nine seasons in the minors, but only .221 in 373 MLB games.
