Browns' Kevin Stefanski breaks silence on Quinshon Judkins arrest
The post Browns' Kevin Stefanski breaks silence on Quinshon Judkins arrest appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Cleveland Browns have decided to hold off on signing rookie running back Quinshon Judkins after he was arrested on charges of domestic violence earlier this month. Judkins was also not present for the first day of training camp. Head coach Kevin Stefanski spoke about the situation at camp and noted that the team takes domestic violence seriously. 'This is something I take very seriously, we take very seriously,' Stefanski said via Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot. 'It's not something we want to be a part of. We want to be shining the light on the good things that our guys are doing in this community. Having said that, I know the league mandates a certain amount of education in all areas, and we decide to go above and beyond that, and we'll continue to do that.' The Browns selected Judkins with the No. 37 pick in the NFL Draft out of Ohio State, where he helped the team win the national championship in 2024. Judkins is one of the last picks out of this past draft who has not signed a contract yet, and it's uncertain if he ever will, depending on how this legal situation goes. Stefanski probably can't do much when it comes to the team and choosing if they'll be here, so general manager Andrew Berry will have his hands in this. The Browns had a solid draft this year, and everybody is excited to see if the team can bounce back from last season. Of course, the one thing people will keep their eye on is Shedeur Sanders and whether he will move up the quarterback depth chart. Sanders had a solid showing during OTAs, but it's uncertain if it was enough to show that he can be the starting quarterback. Outside of the quarterback battle, the Browns will have a lot of eyes on them. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski wants a decision 'sooner than later' as rookies Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders compete with vets at QB
Perhaps the most anticipated NFL position battle of the summer began in earnest on Wednesday as Cleveland Browns quarterbacks took the field for the first time at training camp. As of Wednesday, the competition remains a four-way race between rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders and veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett. But head coach Kevin Stefanski would prefer that the competition not linger deep into training camp. "I think the big thing for me is putting our guys into position where we can evaluate them," Stefanski told reporters Wednesday. "I think they did a great job in the spring — all four of those guys. We'll continue to put them in some situations. "But ultimately, we'd like to make a decision sooner than later." Sooner than later would certainly be ideal for the Browns. But the decision — and its timeline — will be determined by the performances of the quarterbacks on the field. It remains a difficult race to gauge, and reps aren't necessarily the best indicator of where things stand. Not yet, at least. So who has the early leg up? In an interview with Yahoo Sports' Jori Epstein, general manager Andrew Berry explained Cleveland's philosophy on quarterback reps as it pertained to June practice in minicamp. At that point, 17-season NFL veteran Joe Flacco was frequently seen on the sideline. 'Oftentimes, the thought in the NFL is like, 'OK, well, your starter gets 70% of the reps, your backup gets 25% of the reps and your third guy gets 5% of the reps, and the job of the backups is to be ready to play with no reps,' Berry told Yahoo Sports on June 11. 'It doesn't have to be that way — especially in the spring, when we have some flexibility because we're not necessarily preparing for games.' That said, somebody has to go first, and we got an early look at the practice rotations on Wednesday. How the Browns QB practice rotation looks early With four quarterbacks involved, the Browns are breaking up their training camp reps into two segments on two different fields for seven-on-seven drills. The rookies — Gabriel and Sanders — will practice on one field, and the veterans — Flacco and Pickett — will practice on another. It's a system that mirrors their spring practices. Per ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi, Flacco got the first set of reps over Pickett on the veteran Field. Gabriel — who was selected two rounds ahead of Sanders in April's NFL Draft — got the first set of reps on the rookie field. When it came time for individual drills, the rotation went: Pickett, Flacco, Gabriel, Sanders. So take that as you will. As Berry alluded to in June, it's probably best to not read too much into the rotations and the reps this early in the process. But the competition is officially underway. And NFL eyes will be be watching closely.

Browns open training camp with rookie running back Judkins' status undetermined
Cleveland Browns coach Kevin Stefanski has to deal with uncertainty during training camp about a second-round draft pick for the second straight year because of an off-field incident. Stefanski said the Browns were still gathering more information on Quinshon Judkins after the rookie running back was arrested on July 12 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on a charge of battery and domestic violence. 'These are things that we take very, very, very seriously. I know you guys will talk to (general manager) Andrew (Berry) tomorrow, but I don't have much to add on that situation,' Stefanski said on Wednesday before the Browns held their first practice of camp. A Broward County judge found probable cause for the misdemeanor charge in a hearing on July 12. Judkins was released after he posted $2,500 bond. The judge ordered Judkins not to be in contact with the alleged victim and no access to firearms. Judkins was the 36th overall pick in the April draft after rushing for 1,060 yards and 14 touchdowns at Ohio State last season. Cleveland selected Judkins hoping he could become the team's lead running back after Nick Chubb signed with the Houston Texans. The Browns also drafted Dylan Sampson in the fourth round and still have Jerome Ford on the roster after he rushed for 565 yards and averaged 5.4 yards per carry last season. Judkins and Cincinnati defensive end Shemar Stewart (the 17th overall pick) are the NFL's only unsigned draft picks. Stefanski did say it was possible the Browns could add another running back depending on Judkins' future status. Last year, Browns defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. – the team's second-round pick in 2024 – was arrested during training camp on a domestic violence charge. He pleaded his case down to disorderly conduct but was placed on the commissioners exempt list following the incident and suspended five games by the NFL. Hall is opening training camp this year on the physically unable to perform list after suffering a knee injury in last season's final game at Baltimore. 'The league mandates a certain amount of education in all areas, certainly in this area, and we decide to go above and beyond that, and we will continue to do that,' Stefanski said. 'If there's more ways that we can reach players in any area, in area of education, we'll continue to look at that.' The biggest storyline of training camp and the three preseason games will be the four-way quarterback competition between Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders. After Deshaun Watson ruptured his Achilles tendon for the second time in three months in January, Cleveland acquired Pickett in a trade from Philadelphia in March and signed Flacco in April. It drafted Gabriel in the third round and then moved up in the fifth round to take Sanders. Stefanski did not give a timeline for when he would like to make a decision on who will be the starter in the Sept. 7 opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. 'I think with all things, depth chart, certainly quarterback, I have a plan that's in pencil, and we have to take in information every single day, take in how guys are handling certain situations, and then adjust from there,' he said. 'I think the big thing for me is putting our guys in position where we can evaluate them. I think they did a great job in the spring. All four of those guys will continue to put them in some situations, but ultimately, we'd love to make a decision sooner than later.' With most of the attention on quarterback, veteran guard Joel Bitonio is hoping the Browns can bounce back after finishing 3-14 last season after making the playoffs in 2023. 'I understand why the outside world wants to write us off because it makes sense from what you're looking at the year before,' Bitonio said. 'I think honestly every NFL team goes into training camp knowing they have a chance. We have a majority of our team back from two years ago when we went 11-6 and made the playoffs.'
