Lorry driver killed in predawn crash on NSE
MUAR: A 46-year-old lorry driver was killed in a predawn crash involving two heavy vehicles at Km144 of the North-South Expressway (southbound) early this morning.
Initial police findings suggest the lorry had abruptly switched from the left to the right lane, leading a Hino lorry travelling in the same direction from Penang to Johor Baru to crash into its rear.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the Hino lorry driver, 42, attempted to brake but collided with the rear right corner of the Nissan, causing it to veer off to the left side of the highway.
"The Nissan driver sustained serious internal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hino driver and his 42-year-old passenger escaped unhurt," he said in a statement today.
The case is investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction.
He urged witnesses to contact investigation officer Inspector Khairun Izham Noor Yusry at 013-9121508 or visit the Muar district traffic police station to assist in the probe.
