UAE backs Ukraine's rebuilding efforts with new partnerships
The UAE has reaffirmed its strong commitment to Ukraine's recovery efforts at the 2025 Ukraine Recovery Conference, held this week in Rome. Leading the Emirati delegation was Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, who highlighted the UAE's continued engagement in Ukraine and emphasised the importance of global platforms like the URC in coordinating long-term support. The UAE also welcomed Poland as the next host for URC 2026, emphasizing the importance of continuity in international cooperation. During the event, the UAE signed new humanitarian initiatives with the Olena Zelenska Foundation, aimed at supporting children affected by the conflict through education, psychosocial care and safe spaces. A trilateral agreement between the UAE, Italy and Ukraine was also announced, focusing on digital transformation, vocational training and empowering women-led businesses. In addition, the UAE and Italy pledged joint support for youth in Ukraine and agreed to co-finance development projects in Africa, including climate-smart coffee production in Ethiopia and sustainable farming in Côte d'Ivoire. On the business front, UAE-based Khazna Data Centres signed a major deal with Italian energy firm Eni to build a 500-megawatt AI data centre campus in Lombardy, powered by low-carbon energy. Al Hashimy also held high-level talks with Italian officials to strengthen investment ties and reaffirm the strong UAE–Italy partnership. Since the beginning of the conflict in 2022, the UAE has played a vital humanitarian role in Ukraine—delivering aid, building housing for orphans, and facilitating over 15 prisoner exchanges. The UAE also remains the only country to sign a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with Ukraine since the conflict began.

Khazna partners with Nvidia to build AI factories across MEA
With plans to scale up to 1GW of capacity across several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Türkiye, this collaboration positions Khazna as a major enabler of the region's AI ambitions. Khazna Data Centres (Khazna), a global leader in hyperscale digital infrastructure, has announced a major collaboration with Nvidia to develop advanced AI factories across the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region. The partnership reflects the growing demand for robust AI infrastructure and positions the UAE—and the wider region—as a rising global hub for AI innovation. The announcement comes in the wake of US President Donald Trump's high-profile visit to the UAE and the unveiling of a planned 5-gigawatt UAE-US AI campus. The collaboration between Khazna and NVIDIA marks another step in strengthening regional ties with US tech leaders and underscores the shared ambition to shape the future of artificial intelligence and digital transformation. As part of this alliance, Nvidia has certified the architectural design of Khazna's next-generation data centres to support its cutting-edge Blackwell platform. All of Khazna's current and upcoming infrastructure projects will now incorporate Nvidia-ready blueprints by default, ensuring full compatibility with the latest GPU-accelerated computing demands. Khazna plans to design the majority of its future data halls with capacities reaching up to 50 megawatts and will develop individual AI clusters as large as 250 megawatts. Many of these high-capacity facilities will be part of the anticipated UAE-US AI campus, placing the UAE at the forefront of global AI infrastructure development. In addition to its ambitions within the UAE, Khazna is rapidly expanding its footprint across key markets in the Middle East, Africa and Europe. The company aims to scale up to 1 gigawatt of total capacity, with ongoing developments in countries including France, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Türkiye and Kenya. Commenting on the partnership, Hassan Alnaqbi, CEO of Khazna Data Centers, said: 'The world is entering a new era of AI-driven innovation, and the UAE is uniquely positioned to lead. Our work with Nvidia represents a bold step forward in delivering high-performance, future-ready infrastructure at unprecedented scale. It reinforces our support for the UAE's ambitions to become a global AI leader.'

MENA Region Sees Surge in M&A Activity as Deal Value Hits $46 Billion in Q1 2025
The MENA region recorded a sharp uptick in mergers and acquisitions in the first quarter of 2025, with deal volume rising 31% year-on-year to 225 and total deal value soaring 66% to $46 billion, according to the EY MENA M&A Insights 2024 report. The United Arab Emirates retained its position as the region's top M&A destination, accounting for 63 deals worth $20.3 billion. Kuwait followed with $2.3 billion in deal value, largely driven by transactions in the industrial and utilities sectors. Cross-border activity led the growth, making up 52% of deal volume and 81% of total value at $37.3 billion — the highest level in five years. The trend reflects a broader strategic push by companies to diversify beyond domestic markets. Domestically, M&A also saw steady growth, contributing 48% of total deal volume. The technology sector emerged as a key driver, making up 37% of domestic deal value. A standout deal involved Abu Dhabi-based Group 42 acquiring a 40% stake in Khazna Data Centres for $2.2 billion. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait dominated intraregional transactions, accounting for 83% of domestic deal value. Meanwhile, Canada attracted the highest outbound deal value from MENA investors at $6.4 billion, while the U.S. led in deal volume. Inbound foreign direct investment surged, with deal value reaching $17.6 billion — a dramatic increase from $2.5 billion a year earlier. Austria led inbound investment, primarily through a major deal in the chemicals sector. EY analysts expect momentum to continue through 2025, with technology, energy, and consumer sectors driving further activity, fueled by regional reforms and growing investor confidence.
