Dodgers Place Kike Hernandez on IL, Recall James Outman Ahead of Brewers Series

Dodgers Place Kike Hernandez on IL, Recall James Outman Ahead of Brewers Series originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Dodgers, ahead of their series against the Milwaukee Brewers and following a three-game sweep at the hands of the Houston Astros, made a slew of roster moves. Advertisement On Twitter/X, the Dodgers announced that they have recalled outfielder James Outman from Triple-A, selected the contract of Julian Fernandez, optioned Justin Wrobleski, placed Kike Hernandez on the injured list and designated CJ Alexander for assignment. It's a bunch of roster moves being made at once, with Hernandez's injured list placement and Outman's call-up being the most notable moves from this announcement. Hernandez played in two of the Dodgers' games against the Astros, going hitless in seven at-bats between the two contests. On the year, he is hitting .195 with eight home runs, and 5.1 innings pitched with a 15.19 ERA. Advertisement Outman, meanwhile, has been bouncing between Triple-A and the Major Leagues for the Dodgers this season. He's making his return to the Majors after another stint in the minors and will look to carve out a more solid role on the roster. Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts (30) yells at San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt (8) after benches cleared in the eighth inning at Dodger Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images So far, through 24 at-bats in the Majors this season, Outman has a .125 batting average and a .597 OPS. He has two home runs out of his three hits but hasn't managed to stop getting out, as over half his at-bats have resulted in strikeouts this season. Meanwhile, Fernandez is making his return to MLB for the first time since 2021. Wrobleski pitched in 40 innings for the Dodgers, with a 4.50 ERA. He heads back down to the minors two days after allowing four earned runs against the Astros in 4.2 innings. Advertisement Alexander didn't make any appearances for the Dodgers in the Majors, and in Triple-A, he hit .142 with a .393 OPS in his two games for the Dodgers. The Dodgers' roster moves come amid the team's losing skid, as they travel to Milwaukee to face the Brewers and look to rebound from a rough series against a bitter rival. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel) MILWAUKEE (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers utilityman Kiké Hernández went on the injured list with left elbow inflammation and outfielder James Outman got called up from the minors among a series of moves the NL West leaders made Monday. The Dodgers also called up right-handed pitcher Julian Fernández, optioned left-hander Justin Wrobleski to Triple-A Oklahoma City and designated infielder CJ Alexander for assignment before beginning a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers. Advertisement Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Hernández started getting bothered by the elbow issue during a series in Cleveland at the end of May. 'There was a slide there at home plate where it really started to act up and bother him,' Roberts said. 'At that point in time, he kept it to himself, just wanting to be out there and compete. It just continually got worse and really impacted his offense and his swing. And so just a couple of days ago it really reached a head where it was pretty much intolerable.' Hernández has hit just .109 (6 of 55) since the start of June. The 33-year-old is batting .195 with a .259 on-base percentage, eight homers and 22 RBIs in 71 games this season. Roberts said the Dodgers are hopeful Hernández could return shortly after the All-Star break. Advertisement Outman, 28, batted .125 (3 of 24) with two homers and four RBIs in nine games during an earlier stint with Los Angeles this season. He has been hitting .289 with a .378 on-base percentage, 20 homers, 74 RBIs and 14 steals in 70 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City. The Dodgers arrived in Milwaukee after getting swept in a three-game home series with Houston that underscored their roster issues due to various nagging injuries. Outfielder Teoscar Hernández and second baseman Tommy Edman didn't play in a 5-1 loss to the Astros on Sunday and remained out of the lineup Monday, though neither player was placed on the injured list. Teoscar Hernández fouled a ball off his left foot and Edman fouled a ball off his right foot Saturday in a 6-4 loss to the Astros. Edman ended up with a fractured toe. Roberts said both players could be available off the bench the next couple of days and expressed hope they might be able to start Wednesday. Advertisement Fernández, 29, was 3-0 with a 4.08 ERA and 32 strikeouts over 28 2/3 innings in 24 appearances with Oklahoma City. Wrobleski, 24, was 4-3 with a 4.50 ERA and 40 strikeouts over 40 innings in eight appearances with Los Angeles. The Dodgers had just claimed Alexander off waivers from the New York Yankees last week before designating him for assignment Monday. ___ AP MLB:

Dodgers Hint at Disappointing Move for $66 Million Slugger After Latest Setback

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Los Angeles Dodgers have retained a lead in the competitive National League West division all season, but some cracks are beginning to show as the All-Star break approaches. After a surprising series sweep at the hands of the Houston Astros, which saw the Dodgers outscored 29-6 across three games, the team is just one game over .500 against teams with winning records so far this year. And while much has been made of the Dodgers' struggles to keep their pitching arms healthy so far this season, injuries to some key position players have emerged as well. Both Tommy Edman and Kike Hernandez were held out on Sunday as they battle injuries, alongside veteran third baseman Max Muncy. But perhaps most concerning was a setback for a key outfield slugger. "Teoscar Hernandez, who fouled a ball off his left foot Saturday, spent 13 days on the IL with a groin problem in May and has been troubled by that injury and a nagging hip-flexor issue that could be behind a slump that has seen him hit .188/.240/.321 over his last 30 games," according to Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times. Henderson/Getty Images) More Henderson/Getty Between Edman, Kike Hernandez and Teoscar Hernandez, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts hinted that at least one could be headed for the injured list, and that it probably won't be Edman. "There is talk about one of those guys potentially going on the IL," Roberts said, per Baxter. "I don't see it being Tommy but we're still kind of trying to figure that out." After Teoscar Hernandez re-signed with the Dodgers on a three-year, $66 million deal this past winter, another stint on the IL would be a disappointing development to the season. He has slashed just .257/.291/.468 this season after an All-Star campaign last year. More MLB: Mets' Juan Soto Breaks Silence on All-Star Snub

Short-handed Dodgers may be forced to make roster moves after Astros sweep

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts could do little to counteract Houston Astros left-handers Bennett Sousa and Bryan King in the seventh and eighth innings of Sunday's 5-1 loss . Three of Roberts' four right-handed hitting reserves — Teoscar Hernández, Kiké Hernández and switch-hitter Tommy Edman — were unavailable because of minor injuries, which could force the Dodgers to make a roster move to bolster their bench depth before Monday night's series opener at Milwaukee.

(AP Photo/David Zalubowski) LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts could do little to counteract Houston Astros left-handers Bennett Sousa and Bryan King in the seventh and eighth innings of Sunday's 5-1 loss. Advertisement That forced left fielder Michael Conforto, second baseman Hyeseong Kim and catcher Dalton Rushing, all lefties, to bat against Sousa and King, who threw scoreless innings to help the Astros sweep a three-game series in Dodger Stadium for the first time since 2008. 'Today, we had one player available, and that was the catcher,' Roberts said, referring to All-Star starter Will Smith, who is healthy but was given the day off. 'That's not a good feeling.' Teoscar Hernández, who is batting .257 with a .758 OPS, 14 homers and 54 RBIs, fouled a ball off his left foot Saturday night. A scan of the foot was negative, but he was too sore to play Sunday and will be reevaluated on Monday. Edman, who is batting .239 with a .718 OPS, 10 homers and 38 RBIs, fractured his toe when he fouled a ball off his right foot on Saturday, but Roberts said the utility player should be able to play through the injury. Advertisement 'It's kind of per his (pain) tolerance,' Roberts said, 'so I don't see an (injured list) situation.' Kiké Hernández, a utility player who is batting .195 with eight homers and 22 RBIs in 71 games, has been playing with left-elbow discomfort for about a month and seems the most likely of the three to go in the injured list Monday or Tuesday. 'It doesn't affect the defense, but his swing has been compromised — yesterday (Saturday), it came to a head as far as swinging, and so we stayed away from him today (Sunday),' Roberts said. 'So with these three guys, we're trying to figure out where we're at.' ___ AP MLB:
