Avondhu HL Division 4: Battling Ballyhooly clinch title from Killavullen
Ballyhooly 2-13 Killavullen 2-10 Ballyhooly and Killavullen met in a highly competitive Cavanagh's Fermoy 13 aside Div 4 HL final at Castletownroche where an impressive display by Ballyhooly in the second half saw them emerge victors by a three-point margin. As the scoreline suggests the game was in the melting pot all through. The winners had some very good displays by Senan Ahern, Dan Cooney, Richard Lombard, Liam McCarthy and Cathal O'Keeffe who was later named 'man of the match', while Killavullen also had some very good performances by Kevin Fox, Seán Palmer, Seán Woulfe, Joseph Cagney, Séamus O'Mahony, Pádraig Cronin, Colm Looney and Colm Hannon. The opening stages saw Killavullen create the games first goal scoring opportunity when Pádraig Cronin was narrowly wide. Instead it was Ballyhooly that moved 0-2 to 0-1 in front before Killavullen made up for their earlier miss when Colm Hannon finished to the net in the 10th minute as they moved two clear. Ballyhooly's response was immediate with Senan Ahern having his third and fourth point of the game that tied matters at 1-1 to 0-4 by the 13th minute. Killavullen shaded matters for the rest of the half. Two long range efforts from Colm Looney and Seán Woulfe moved them two clear before they were denied another goal scoring chance when a vital Ballyhooly clearance prevented a certain goal. Ballyhooly had another point by Seán Ahern, but it was Killavullen that finished in a flurry as they opened up a sizeable cushion at the interval. In the 25th minute a delivery by Seán Palmer from near the sideline was finished to the net by Colm Looney following a goal mouth scramble and this was followed by a long range effort from Sean Woulfe that helped them lead at the break by double scores 2-4 to 0-5. On the changeover Ballyhooly certainly took the game to their opponents from the offset. In the 31st minute a huge puckout by keeper Cian Murphy set up Richard Lombard who scored a great point despite being under severe pressure from the Killavullen defence. Colm Hannon replied with a fine point for Killavullen before Ballyhooly came close to a goal when a fine solo run by Liam McCarthy placed Senan Ahern whose effort at goal was saved by the Killavullen keeper Darragh O'Connor at the expense of a '65. ADVERTISEMENT However, Ahern made amends soon after when he drilled a free to the net that reduced the margin to 2-5 to 1-6. It was all Ballyhooly at this stage with Richard Lombard and Senan Ahern reeling off rapid points before Cathal O'Keeffe with a huge point in the 43rd minute edged them in front 1-9 to 2-5. In a thrilling finish Killavullen drew level when good work by the hard-working Seán Palmer set up Séamus O'Mahony for a point. In their next attack Killavullen hit the front when Kevin Fox set up Kian Lane who split the posts. The lead was shortlived with Ballyhooly forcing parity courtesy of Senan Ahern pointed free in the 49th minute and they were also tied at 1-11 to 2-8 and 2-9 to 1-12 by the 55th minute when Richard Lombard, Colm Hannon, Séamus O'Mahony and Senan Ahern swapped some delightful scores. With extra time a possibility Ballyhooly struck for the winning score in the 58th minute when a delivery by Liam McCarthy dropped short on the edge of the square with substitute Jack Keating quick to react to finish to the net following a goal mouth scramble. Killavullen laid siege on the Ballyhooly backline late in the game but some superb defending by Cathal O'Keeffe, Dan Cooney and team captain Jeff Gowen kept them at bay. Seán Woulfe pointed a free for Killavullen, but this score was quickly cancelled out at the otherend when Liam McCarthy soloed through to score a fine point. This was greeted by the final whistle with Ballyhooly emerging victors. After the game Aisling Carroll on behalf of the Avondhu GAA Board presented the cup to the winning captain Jeff Gowen amongst a large Ballyhooly following.

'Story is only getting started' - Spike Island thrills to Drift drama
Some of the top Irish drift drivers thrilled the capacity crowd on Spike Island on Saturday evening as Buttevant's Alan Hynes beat 15 other drivers to win the Red Bull Drift Pursuit. He held off the challenges of second-placed Stephen Halferty (Derry) with Jakub Krzyszczak (Waterford) winning the battle for third from Jake Davey (Galway). For almost two hours the head-to-head competition kept the attendance on their toes before local hero Hynes took the title in front of a majority Cork crowd. In glorious sunshine, the fans were treated to demonstration drives on the custom-built course by world drift stars, brothers Conor and Jack Shanahan from Killavullen in their Toyota GT86's. There was also an appearance from Irish World Rally Championship driver Derry's Josh McErlean in the M-Sport Ford Puma Rally1, who also showcased his talents to the fans at the iconic location. Hynes was thrilled with his victory, "It's a pretty special moment. I really enjoyed it (Red Bull Drift Pursuit) last year, this year was even more special being in here on Spike Island, the cherry on top really. He added: "What a special venue, a special place, a special event. It's an amazing feeling. The opposition was immense and Stephen (Halferty) pushed me all the way. I was racing in Europe last weekend and had a big crash, so it was nice to come here and take the win." Meanwhile, as he enjoyed some time in his native county, Conor Shanahan, who currently leads the Drift Masters European Championship (DMEC) and displayed why he is regarded as one of the best in the world, said, "Personally, I feel every time we look at ourselves in drifting and how look at the sport these days and how big the sport is getting, to be here in Spike Island with an event, it's pretty unique, who would have thought that ten years ago, there is so much history here. "To do it close to home and have local support is pretty special. Home is always special. This story is only getting started, there's a lot to write yet."

Postman opened cards in search of money to pay off loan shark debt, court hears
A former An Post employee who removed cash from cards and letters in a bid to repay loan sharks who threatened to burn down his house has received a fully suspended prison sentence. Michael Ryan, of Ross Street, Killavullen, Co Cork appeared before Cork Circuit Criminal Court on Monday for sentencing. His offending behaviour mainly involved the opening of greeting cards and letters in the hope that they continued money. The 39-year-old had been remanded in custody on June 20th last for sentencing. READ MORE Garda Eoin O'Callaghan said the offending occurred from October 24th, 2023 to November 18th, 2023. Garda O'Callaghan told Judge Helen Boyle it was difficult to put a figure on the total financial loss. He indicated that many of the envelopes which were opened by Mr Ryan were bright and colourful and looked like they contained greeting cards. Mr Ryan co-operated fully with the Garda investigation into the matter. He also wrote a letter of apology to the court. Defence barrister Emmet Boyle said his client was hugely remorseful for his behaviour. 'He is deeply sorry and disgusted with himself for ruining a fine job that he had at this time,' he said. Mr Boyle said the accused had borrowed €3,000 from a loan shark, with his debt soon doubling to €6,000. He stated that Mr Ryan was warned that if he did not pay his debt, his house would be burned down. Judge Helen Boyle said Mr Ryan had breached the trust of both his employer and the public. She emphasised that the public depends on the honesty with which the postal service operates. She said Mr Ryan had brought shame on himself while suffering the loss of a good job arising out of his offending behaviour. Judge Boyle commended gardaí and An Post for their quick response after members of the public noticed that cards containing cash and vouchers were not reaching their destination. Two items were put in the post as a test. Mr Ryan was caught on CCTV at a sorting office removing the items and bringing them to his car. He had opened some 140 coloured cards and 77 commercial letters. Judge Boyle said that, generally, older people send cash and vouchers in the post as gifts for loved ones. 'They are entitled to not have them interfered with and for them to arrive intact,' she said. She noted the guilty plea, the full admissions on arrest, the remorse of the accused and his mental health difficulties, before sentencing him to 27 months in prison, which she fully suspended. Mr Ryan was also ordered to carry out 240 hours of community service. He had pleaded guilty to theft of post at the A Post delivery service unit at Carrignaroher, Fermoy, Co Cork and to related charges of possessing stolen post and interference with post.

North Cork hurling final between Ballyhooly and Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels is too tight to call
The Avondhu GAA Bard hurling league division one final promises to be a very closely fought contest Despite Killavullen and Kilshannig who were Championship winners in 2024 and 2022 not being involved, this year's North Cork league was still a very competitive one, involving Ballyhooly, Buttevant, Charleville, Clyda Rovers, Dromina, Harbour Rovers, Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels and Shanballymore. Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels got off to a very good start with a 2-29 to 2-12 win over Shanballymore and followed with a 4-26 to 2-16 win over Charleville. They then played last year's County JBHC winner, Buttevant, and the game finished 1-10 each.
