NewJeans' hiatus hits 1 year; critics call the group's break 'fatal'; Find out more

NewJeans, now called NJZ, has been at the forefront of headlines for their feud with their management agency, ADOR. The group has been on a 'hiatus' for the past year or so amid the ongoing case. Recently, critics in the music industry have been sharing their thoughts and opinions on how harmful this unintended break is going to be for the group in the future. Critics share opinions about NJZ's 1-year hiatus As per reports from K-media news outlet JoongAng Ilbo, critics have been labeling the girl group's hiatus as 'fatal.' Renowned music critic Kim Do Heon shared how, although "no one has passed that level of organicity and unity' like NJZ, their long break from releasing music and promoting on platforms can lead to the group's untimely downfall. He pointed towards how the group may also be losing out on brand deals to other K-pop idol groups and celebrities who have remained active and consistent in the past year. Aespa's recent performance video using a popular phone brand for promotion and NMIXX, as well as Stray Kids, have all managed to score high-end brand endorsement deals from known brands. The criticism and opinions on the group's hiatus poured in after one of the members, Minji, was officially removed from the ambassador list of one of the top luxury brands in the world. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Hiatus 'fatal' for NJZ Do Heon also shared how badly the break can affect the idols' careers. He shared that "K-pop is an industry that moves very quickly. With hundreds of new groups being released, a one-year hiatus is fatal to even the most successful groups [like NewJeans]." The group has not been active since June last year, when they released their Japanese album 'Supernatural.' The ongoing case with ADOR has been a major reason for the group's lack of activity.

Critic calls NewJeans' one-year hiatus 'fatal' amid losing contracts to Stray Kids, aespa and more

NewJeans has been embroiled in a prolonged dispute with ADOR, centered on the validity of their contracts. As the controversy persists and evolves, professionals from both the music industry have begun to offer their assessments of the current situation. A June 23 article by K-media JoongAng Ilbo included the potential consequences the quintet could face in case of a one-year hiatus. Will NewJeans' hiatus lead to their downfall? Popular music critic Kim Do Heon shared his thoughts on the NewJeans vs ADOR controversy and how the girl group's hiatus might serve as an irreparable setback for them. According to him, NewJeans is more than just a meticulously crafted team; they are a group that authentically embodies the creator's vision. He mentioned, "No one has passed that level of organicity and unity." However, things might take an unwanted turn with the hiatus. Indications of the same are already emerging. Notably, aespa recently shot a performance video using an iPhone, for a sponsored campaign, just like NewJeans' ETA music video. Similarly, NMIXX's Haewon landed an individual endorsement deal with Coca-Cola, while Stray Kids became the new faces of Pepero, a brand NewJeans had represented for two consecutive years. The luxury goods sector is also reflecting this change, as evidenced by Minji's omission from the Chanel ambassador roster. Critic Kim Do Heon shared that "K-pop is an industry that moves very quickly. With hundreds of new groups being released, a one-year hiatus is fatal to even the most successful groups [like NewJeans]." Following the girl group's last Korean single How Sweet, released on May 24, 2024 and Japanese debut album Supernatural, released on June 21, 2024, they have not had any comebacks. The reason for the same is their battle with ADOR. Legally the case hasn't been in favour of the girls, with their plans to rebrand as NJZ falling apart, and them losing deals to other K-pop artists. However, ambassador activities within the ADOR contract still seem to be going on fine, as recently, Danielle attended Omega's launch event.
