Karisma Kapoor's ex-mother-in-law still doesn't know how son Sunjay Kapur died, demands closure amid Rs 30,000 crore family feud: ‘I need closure before I go'

The late businessman Sunjay Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur, has offered further comments amid an ongoing family feud over his estate. Her comments come days after she alleged that she was coerced into signing documents in a moment of weakness, and after Sunjay's widow, Priya Sachdev, was appointed as a 'non-executive director' at the family's auto parts manufacturing company, Sona Comstar. In an interview with the news agency ANI, Rani Kapur said that she is uncertain about how her son died, implying that she has her suspicions. Sunjay died in June in a freak accident while playing polo, when he went into cardiac arrest after swallowing a bee. His last rites were performed in New Delhi. Rani Kapur said, 'I still don't know what happened to my son. I'm old now, and I need closure before I go. I may be old and frail, but my memory of being with my husband when Sona was set up is strong. I remember the early days of Sona, built with care, sacrifice, and love. I'm here to remind the world that our family legacy must not be lost. It must be passed on as my husband always wanted it to be. Given my health and my age, I will not be making any further comments. My legal team will address everything necessary.' Also read – Sunjay Kapur's wife Priya Sachdev changes name on Instagram amid Rs 30,000 crore estate dispute, is now 'Priya Sunjay Kapur' Some days ago, she had alleged that she was 'compelled to sign various documents without explanation' after her son's death, and that 'certain people' were positioning themselves as representatives of the family. Priya Sachdev was subsequently appointed a 'non-executive director' of Sona Comstar by the board. She has since changed her social media handle from 'Priya Sachdev Kapur' to 'Priya Sunjay Kapur'. Her daughter from her previous marriage to Vikram Chatwal, Safira, has dropped her surname on social media as well. Sunjay and Priya tied the knot in 2017, and had one son, Azarius. He was previously married to Bollywood star Karisma Kapoor, with whom he had two children, daughter Samaira and son Kiaan. In an interview mere weeks before his death, Priya spoke about their blended family. 'Sunjay and I had many conversations. I told him, let's invite Lolo for tea. That tea led to a dinner and eventually, she joined us on family holidays because the kids requested it. I did wonder – would she feel comfortable? Would I? Could I be myself in pajamas, sipping coffee? But after a few such gatherings, it all became very natural,' she said on the Kin and Kindness podcast. Sunjay, on the other hand, had said on a podcast a few months before his death that he'd drawn a 10-year plan. 'When I drew up my 10-year plan, I actually wrote down the broad strokes of work-related and non-work related, foundation-related… I flushed out 2025 to define what I will do. I'm not the sort of person who can sit around without a packed schedule. It's a great luxury to be the master of your own time,' he said on the Indian Silicon Valley podcast. The market cap of Sona Comstar is close to Rs 30,000 crore, and 72% of its shares are held by the public and 28% (Rs 8,200 crore) of its shares are held by its corporate promoter, Aureus Investments Private Limited. In a letter shared with the board ahead of an annual general meeting, Rani Kapur had written, 'I was approached multiple times and compelled to sign various documents without explanation or even having time to read and understand the same. Despite being under immense mental and emotional distress, I was coerced into signing such documents behind locked doors… the contents of such documents have never been revealed to me. Please also take note that I have been totally denied access to my accounts and have been left to the mercy of a select few for survival. All this, in less than a month of my only son passing away. It is unfortunate that while the family and I are still in mourning, some people have chosen this as an opportune time to wrest control and usurp the family legacy.' Rani Kapur has claimed that her late husband, in a will, had made her the sole beneficiary of Sona Comstar before his death in 2015.

Sunjay Kapur's wife Priya Sachdev changes name on Instagram amid Rs 30,000 crore estate dispute, is now ‘Priya Sunjay Kapur'

Days after being appointed as a non-executive director at Sona Comstar, the auto components manufacturing firm chaired by her late husband Sunjay Kapur, Priya Sachdev has made changes to her social media profile, reflecting certain updates. Her bio on Instagram now identifies her as a 'non-executive director' of the firm, while her handle now reads 'Priya Sunjay Kapur', a change from the 'Priya Sachdev Kapur' that she went by previously. Sunjay died in a freak accident some weeks ago, when he went into cardiac arrest after swallowing a bee while playing polo in England. His last rites were performed in New Delhi. Since then, a dispute over his estate, estimated to be worth thousands of crores, has been unfolding in the public. A few days ago, Sunjay's mother, Rani Kapur, wrote a letter to the board of directors ahead of the company's annual general meeting, alleging that she was 'compelled to sign various documents without explanation' after her son's death, and that 'certain people' were positioning themselves as representatives of the family. While she didn't name anyone, it was believed that she was making a reference to Priya, with whom Sunjay shares one son, Azarius, and a daughter from her previous marriage, Safira. Safira, who went by her father Vikram Chatwal's name on social media previously, now simply identifies her by her first name. After joining the entertainment industry as a model in the early 2000s, Priya played a cameo in the film Neal 'n' Nikki. Her marriage with Vikram Chatwal ended after a long custody dispute in 2011. She married Sunjay in 2017, after his separation from actor Karisma Kapoor. Sunjay has two children with Karisma, daughter Samaira and son Kiaan. He reportedly took out bonds worth Rs 14 crore for each of them, and gave Karisma the ownership of a house. In an interview conducted mere weeks before his passing, Priya spoke about Sunjay and Karisma's marriage. She admitted that Sunjay and Karisma's marriage was 'not conventional', and said in an interview on the Kin and Kindness YouTube channel, 'Sunjay's previous marriage was not a conventional marriage. He had two beautiful children from that marriage. We love them dearly and today we are one beautiful blended family.' Last week, filmmaker Suneel Darshan also spoke about having witnessed the decline of Karisma's relationship with Sunjay up close. Asked in an interview with Vickey Lalwani if Sunjay treated Karisma like a 'trophy wife', he said, 'I think that's where the problems came from, for the family. That's what she had become. She was placed into a world that was not hers. Delhi has its own culture, and she wasn't fitting into that culture. They lived in a huge, palatial house, with an endless number of cars. She had seen everything, she was Raj Kapoor's granddaughter; fame, success, she was the number one heroine for a duration. When she decided to recede, she wanted to live the life of a wife.'

‘Thought I had it all right': Late Sunjay Kapur's wife Priya Sachdev on leaving her first marriage that seemed perfect on paper; what incompatibility looks like

In a deeply personal conversation on Kin and Kindness, Priya Sachdev, reflected on her first marriage with American hotelier Vikram Chatwal, just three months before her husband Sunjay Kapur's death. Kapur, an illustrious businessman, passed away on 12 June after accidentally swallowing a bee during a polo match in England. Her experience in her first marriage may resonate with many who have struggled to recognise or respond to the early signs of emotional neglect in a relationship. 'My ex-husband ticked all the boxes… He went to Wharton, worked at Morgan Stanley. I did mathematics at UCLA, a double major with UCLA and LSE… So I thought this is a perfect match,' she shared. 'You know how you do your career path, but it doesn't always work. I thought I had it all right… but I guess I chose wrong.' Sachdev said she began noticing things were wrong soon after she became pregnant. 'When I had her (daughter) and I realised, a few 15 to 20 weeks into my pregnancy, I realised this marriage is not right. But I still continued to make this work.' Eventually, she left five years later, choosing peace for herself and her daughter. 'My ex-in-laws called me apologising… I wasn't valued or appreciated for the sacrifices I made. That was one victory.' Reflecting on her healing, she added, 'The voices in my head didn't bother me anymore… When I controlled the voices in my head, I looked at life differently.' Neha Cadabam, senior psychologist and executive director at Cadabams Hospitals, tells 'When a relationship looks ideal externally, it is easy to ignore subtle emotional red flags. One common sign is a persistent feeling of being emotionally drained after interactions with a partner. This can be misinterpreted as stress or adjustment issues, but it often signals an imbalance in emotional reciprocity.' 'Another red flag is when someone begins to minimise their own needs or consistently rationalises behaviour that makes them uncomfortable. Also, when a partner avoids accountability or makes you question your memory or feelings, even subtly, it can undermine emotional safety,' notes Cadabam. She adds that people sometimes 'dismiss these feelings in the hope that things will improve or because the relationship appears stable on the outside.' But emotional safety, consistent respect, and mutual support are crucial from the very beginning, even if there are no overt conflicts. Adjustment struggles are expected in any long-term relationship. 'They usually arise from situational stress, lifestyle differences, or communication gaps and tend to improve with time, mutual effort, and open conversation. Both partners remain emotionally available and express a shared willingness to grow together,' says Cadabam. In contrast, she mentions, emotional neglect and incompatibility are 'more persistent and feel one-sided.' Signs include a lack of emotional responsiveness, repeated dismissal of concerns, or feeling lonely even when together. If one partner consistently avoids meaningful connection or if emotional needs are met with silence or criticism, it suggests more than temporary friction. 'Long-term incompatibility often shows up in values, emotional capacity, or life goals that feel fundamentally mismatched. Unlike temporary issues, these do not resolve with better communication alone and tend to leave one or both partners feeling unseen or unheard over time,' shares the expert.

Creating a Healthy Environment for Children She added, 'I have my 18-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son. These kids are very healthy. They work out, they eat right, and they work very hard. And we've had conversations, like it's not about us anymore, or our insecurities or our issues.' And my little boy Azarius is a big fan of his older brother. Samaira and Kiaan are also from a broken home, so, for them also, their EQ is very high.'

Speaking about how parenting today differs from her own upbringing, Priya said, 'Kids today are different. Unlike us, they use logic. The mother of two also emphasized the importance of trust and emotional safety. 'I have my 18-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son. These kids are very healthy. They workout, they eat right, and they work very hard. The way for them to do that is to create a healthy environment at home. They should never feel scared of their parents. I trust and respect our children. Gen Z are not rebellious. They don't argue back," she shared. Priya, who married Sunjay in 2017, included his children with Karisma—Samaira and Kiaan—as her own. In a previous interview with Kin and Kindness, Priya had also touched upon the evolving relationship with Karisma Kapoor, showing how maturity and shared love for the children helped them overcome past differences. 'The children have also requested me, saying, 'Mama doesn't have a plan… can we invite her?' Sunjay Kapur, who passed away on June 12, 2025, at the age of 53, had married Karisma Kapoor in 2003. The couple had Samaira and Kiaan before their divorce was finalized in 2016. He married Priya Sachdev the following year and later welcomed Azarius. Their family bond, despite its unconventional shape, was rooted in empathy, understanding, and mutual respect—something Priya Sachdev continues to honour in her heartfelt recollections.
