Jordan's king, Canada's PM discuss Syria, Gaza and aid
LONDON: King Abdullah of Jordan met with Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday in Ottawa for talks which included the situation in Syria and Gaza. Carney, who met with King Abdullah for the first time since taking office in March, also announced that Canada would allocate $28.4 million to support Jordan. The funding is for education, health and job creation, in addition to bolstering Jordan's defense and security to combat terrorism and cross-border crime, the Petra news agency reported. King Abdullah acknowledged Canada's support for Jordan's development, emphasizing the need to enhance investment and collaboration in trade, education, and healthcare. He also emphasized Canada's crucial role as a partner with Jordan in fostering peace and stability in the Middle East, and praised the country's support for humanitarian efforts in Gaza. The leaders called on Israel to ends its war on Gaza and ensure the flow of humanitarian aid to civilians in the territory. King Abdullah also called for end to the violence of Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank; and for the international community to support the creation of a Palestinian state. In addition, he reaffirmed Jordan's support for Syria's security, stability, and territorial integrity. Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Alaa Batayneh, Jordan's Ambassador to Canada Sabah Al-Rafie, and Canadian officials attended the meeting.

Jordan: Royal Court chief attends part of sectoral workshops on agriculture, food security, healthcare
AMMAN — Royal Court Chief Yousef Issawi on Thursday attended part of the sectoral workshops focused on agriculture and food security and healthcare. Held at Royal Hashemite Court (RHC), the sessions are part of the second phase of the Economic Modernisation Vision (EMV), the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Issawi stressed that the EMV, launched under the patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah, represents a 'strategic' national choice. Issawi noted that the RHC's step to host these workshops reflects "clear commitment" to His Majesty's directives to implement the vision within specific timeframes. He pointed out that the EMV aligns with the broader paths of political and administrative modernisation, forming a comprehensive Royal vision cantered on the Jordanian citizen and the improvement of public services across all sectors. Issawi added that holding dedicated sessions for the agriculture, food security, and healthcare sectors is of 'particular significance,' given their fundamental role in the national economy and their direct impact on citizens' daily lives. Experts, academics, and representatives of the private sector and civil society organisations who were involved in drafting the EMV, as well as media professionals, are participating in the sectoral workshops, scheduled to run until July 29. The workshops will serve to solidify the EMV as a blueprint for successive governments within the stipulated timeframe, the statement said. The workshops, which are held periodically for each phase of the EMV, provide an opportunity for a responsible and independent review of its implementation. The workshops will ensure essential feedback is gathered, and will enable plans for optimisation of the vision's initiatives and recommendations, to keep pace with technological and technical developments, in line with the best modern practices, the statement said. AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah visited the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) headquarters in Sacramento, California, where he highlighted investment opportunities in Jordan and the potential for collaboration with major investors from the United States. During the main session at a forum hosted by CalPERS on Thursday to highlight investment opportunities in Jordan, His Majesty noted the Kingdom's short- and long-term economic priorities, and highlighted Jordan's progress in implementing its political, economic, and administrative modernisation plans, according to a Royal Court statement. The King also noted that Jordan continues to exert all possible efforts to stabilise the region, and has preserved its gains despite the economic challenges resulting from regional tensions. Speaking about Jordan's investment advantages, His Majesty said the Kingdom's geographical location, strong financial sector, and free trade agreements with many markets around the world have attracted investments, pointing out opportunities in high-value sectors such as renewable energy, gas, minerals, and agriculture, the statement said. The King also highlighted Jordan's highly skilled workforce and efforts to prepare young people to meet the needs of the labour market by promoting education, vocational training, and upskilling in various fields such as engineering, industry, energy, ICT, and healthcare. The forum included three sessions at which Jordan's economic and investment strategies were discussed, and experiences of a number of investors were showcased. Attendees included US specialists in the investment sector, and representatives of Jordanian companies, according to the statement. CalPERS is the largest public pension fund in the United States, with its investment office managing more than $500 billion in assets, in the US and abroad.
