After 10 years serving as Chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame's Board, McDonald has officially retired from his leadership post—leaving behind a lasting impact that reshaped how hockey history is honored. From iconic winger to iconic leader: Lanny McDonald's transition off the ice Best known for lifting the Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames in 1989, Lanny McDonald didn't hang up his influence when he retired as a player. In 2015, he took over as Chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame, and quietly but powerfully led the organization through milestones like the NHL 's centennial, the 125th anniversary of the Stanley Cup, and even the unpredictable challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 50 new Hall of Famers were inducted under his watch. — HockeyHallFame (@HockeyHallFame) His leadership style? Thoughtful, human, and humble. From overseeing monumental events to making sure Selection Committee members had comfortable chairs, McDonald proved that even the smallest decisions could reflect deep respect for the game. As the Hall itself said in tribute: 'Ten years. Countless moments. One unforgettable leader. Today, we celebrate Lanny McDonald… Lanny's legacy goes far beyond the ice—his passion, humour, and devotion to the game have shaped the Hall and inspired hockey fans around the world.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 올 여름, 아이들의 터닝포인트를 2만원으로 선물하세요 굿네이버스 더 알아보기 Undo A survivor, a gentleman, and a man of unmatched heart McDonald's off-ice legacy also includes countless acts of character and resilience. In 2024, he suffered a cardiac arrest at the Calgary airport shortly after the NHL All-Star Game. He was the NHL's first-ever King Clancy Trophy winner for leadership and humanitarian work and was honored with a lifetime achievement award from the WHL. As one fan simply put it: 'A truly decent person. Congrats Lanny.' Examining how Panthers, Oilers stack up for Stanley Cup Final rematch

The excitement is building ahead of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final. This year's championship series offers a rare rematch of season's epic seven-game series, which pitted the Florida Panthers against the Edmonton Oilers. Advertisement Florida won the first three games, convincingly, before dropping the next three, even more convincingly, and eventually emerging victorious in a Game 7 the hockey gods would've been proud of. The Panthers won that seventh game on home ice, which is a luxury they won't have this time around should the series go the distance again. That shouldn't be an issue for these Panthers, however. Paul Maurice's crew has been historically good on the road during this postseason, winning eight of the ten games they've played outside of Sunrise by a ridiculous goal differential of plus-27. That's right, in those ten away games, Florida has scored an eye-popping 48 times while allowing just 21 goals against. Advertisement Conversely, they've given up the same amount of goals at home, 18, as they have scored, which makes sense when seeing as though they hold just a 5-4 at Amerant Bank Arena. One thing that many can agree on is that both teams arrive at this year's Final better than they were a season ago. Edmonton is averaging a league best 4.06 goals per game this postseason while the Panthers are putting up 3.88. Defensively, Florida is allowing 2.29 goals per game, lowest of any playoff team, while the Oilers have given up a similarly stingy 2.81. It's to no one's surprise that Edmonton remains one of the best in the business on the power play. Advertisement They enter the Final operating at a 30.0% success rate while on the man advantage, which is actually a tick higher than last postseason. Florida is also executing at a higher rate during this year's playoffs than they did last year, rising from 18.5% to 23.2% this postseason. One of the big differences from last June to now is on the penalty kill. While the Panthers have remained consistently solid on the PK – last playoffs they killed 88.0% of penalties and this year they're killing 87.9% - it's the Oilers who have seen a significant drop-off. Last year they were lights out, allowing only four power play goals during the entire postseason while killing 94.3% of the power plays they faced. Advertisement We'll see if that element comes into play when the series kicks off on Wednesday night. Puck drop is set for 8 p.m. ET from Rogers Place in Edmonton. Aleksander Barkov praised across fanbases after Selke Trophy surprise from children's hospital patients

Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov was left stunned with the Frank J. Selke Trophy and King Clancy Memorial Trophy recently, but it wasn't the league or a press conference that made the experience so memorable. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Instead, Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital patients delivered the awards in person at the Panthers' practice facility in Hollywood, Florida. The touching moment resonated not just with Florida Panthers fans but across enemy fanbases on Reddit, where hockey fans put aside playoff wars to praise Aleksander Barkov's humility and skill. Aleksander Barkov receives widespread acclaim after poignant Selke Trophy ceremony Barkov Awarded King Clancy Trophy AND Selke Trophy The surprise ceremony, organized by children fighting real-life adversity, made for a strong moment that eclipsed ordinary hockey rivalries. Aleksander Barkov, who received the Frank J. Selke Trophy for his excellent defensive play as a forward and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for leadership and community service, looked visibly shaken when the young patients presented him with the honors. But maybe the most surprising response came not from Barkov himself but from the fervent hockey community on Reddit. 'I know we're about to go to war with these dudes but I fucking love Barkov, man,' one commenter wrote, referencing the Panthers' upcoming playoff wars. Another, a fan of the Edmonton Oilers, had this to say: 'Oilers fan and completely agree. He's an absolute gem and even though he's getting more notice now, I'd still say he's underrated.' The admiration came from fans of bitter divisional rivals such as the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins, with one even praising Barkov alongside Patrice Bergeron and Anze Kopitar, two of the best names that are synonymous with two-way greatness in hockey. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'He's taken over Bergeron's on & off ice greatness!' one user commented. Others pondered the way Barkov's gentlemanly character brings dignity to the sport. One commenter commented, 'It's hard not to love him. One of the most likable players in the game.' Even those Panthers fans known for their hatred of the team couldn't help but express admiration: 'I hate the Panthers. I love Barkov. He's on the Bergeron/Kopitar tier of phenomenal players.' The response wasn't simply emotional; it also highlighted how consistently great Barkov has been and how quietly he has sustained that level. 'Barkov is so consistently good I feel some fans overlook him,' one commenter said—echoing long-time complaints that Barkov doesn't receive the national criticism he deserves. Even during controversies, like whether or not the NHL should hold off on giving out awards until the conclusion of the playoffs, the dominant mood was gratitude for Barkov's leadership both on and off the ice. Also read: Aleksander Barkov's surprise award ceremony was far more than a warm-and-fuzzy moment; it was a rare unifier in a hyper-competitive sport. With fans from every corner of the NHL universe chiming in to congratulate his class, ability, and humility, Barkov's legend as a modern icon keeps building. The Panthers might have their fair share of detractors, but their captain is winning hearts throughout the league.

Florida Panthers Captain Aleksander Barkov sets NHL record by winning Selke, King Clancy in the same year

Photo byAleksander Barkov just pulled off something no player in NHL history has ever done. The Florida Panthers captain clinched both the Selke Trophy and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy this year, a rare feat in itself—but made truly historic by achieving them in the same season. While other legends have won both at different points in their careers, Barkov is the first to sweep the awards together—cementing his place as not just an elite two-way player, but also a community leader off the ice. Aleksandar Barkov becomes first player to win Selke, King Clancy together For the third time in his career, Barkov claimed the Selke Trophy, awarded to the league's best defensive forward. Alongside it, he earned his first King Clancy Trophy, given for exceptional leadership and humanitarian efforts. While legends like Patrice Bergeron, Ron Francis, and Dave Poulin have won both over the course of their careers, none had managed to do it in a single season—until now. What made the moment even more special? Children from Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital surprised Barkov by presenting him with the awards themselves. 'Bringing the kids from Joe DiMaggio to announce it — it was great for sure,' Barkov shared. 'I'll remember that for the rest of my life.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo Reflecting on his journey from a wide-eyed teenager to team captain, Barkov said, 'When I first got here I was just a young kid and the community kind of like accepted me here… So at some point in my career it was just a matter of time when I realized I should probably start giving something back.' His #BarkovScores4JoeD initiative has raised over $420,000 for the hospital since 2019, donating $1,600 per goal and $800 per assist. Coach Paul Maurice praised Barkov's quiet, genuine nature: 'It so fits his personality that it's done quietly, not on a website every day. It's not a photo op for Sasha.' Forward Sam Bennett added, 'He really is just the perfect human.' In another franchise first, Panthers teammate Sam Reinhart finished second in Selke voting—marking the first 1-2 Selke finish by teammates. As the Panthers gear up for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Oilers, Barkov's dual honor stands as a testament to leadership on and off the ice. And with his team rallying behind him, Florida fans are hoping there's even more history to write. Also Read: Top NHL prospect Matthew Schaefer returns from injury ahead of 2025 draft

NHL gives Aleksander Barkov the Selke and King Clancy awards - with the help of kids

Florida's Aleksander Barkov thought the team meeting was over. He found it odd that the Panthers hadn't been told they could leave. Article content Turns out, there was a good reason — two of them, actually. Article content The Panthers hadn't had an opportunity to spend any time at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital — a facility Barkov works with and raises money for — during their playoff run, so the team decided to bring some of the patients into the team facility for a visit instead. And the kids came bearing gifts for Barkov. Article content 'I thought maybe some picture, some art that they had drawn for me,' Barkov said. Article content He hopped over the back row of seats in the Panthers' theater-style meeting room and went down to meet the kids. And imagine his surprise when the 'gifts' were brought in — first the King Clancy Trophy that gets awarded to the player that combines leadership on and off the ice with humanitarian work, then the Selke Trophy that gets presented to the NHL's best defensive forward. Article content The awards were technically awarded to Barkov last week; they were announced by the NHL on Monday. It's the third Selke for Barkov, and the first King Clancy. Article content 'It was amazing,' Barkov told The Associated Press. 'I got a little emotional there. I didn't really have words to say. That was very nicely done, and I was really thankful for everyone who was part of it.' Article content The NHL is announcing the winners of top individual awards a little differently this year, adding surprise elements with only a handful of people knowing what is happening ahead of time. The NHL and TNT had cameras and microphones inside the team meeting room for the Barkov announcement, which might have been a sign that something unusual was happening that day. Article content And the Barkov surprises were sold perfectly, too. Panthers coach Paul Maurice was standing in his customary spot in the front of the room, purportedly waiting for another speaker and wondering if they were locked out. He opened the door on the room's right side so hockey operations president and general manager Bill Zito could walk in, and Zito went right into character. Article content Zito introduced one of the young patients, under the guise of presenting Barkov with 'a little thank-you gift.' The boy spoke for a few seconds, finishing with 'bring in the gift,' and that's when someone from the NHL carried the Clancy into the room. Article content 'Thank you, guys,' Barkov said, holding the Clancy while addressing the handful of kids and their family members who were invited to be part of the surprise. 'Obviously, I was not expecting this. Not really too many words to say right now, but it means a lot and obviously, you guys — well, I'm a little emotional here — but I love how you guys showed up here.'
