AAI designs Master Plan for Puducherry Airport expansion
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has developed a Master Plan for Puducherry airport with the provision for operation of A-320 class of aircraft, Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu said in Parliament on Thursday (July 24, 2025). Responding to a question raised by Member of Parliament V. Vaithilingam on the status of expansion of the Puducherry airport, Mr. Naidu said that the AAI Master Plan envisaged an extended runway length of 2,300m and 45m width. The total additional land requirement will be 402 acres, out of which 217 acres are situated in Tamil Nadu and 185 acres are in Puducherry. The Master Plan has been shared with the Government of Puducherry, the Minister said. Responding to another part of the starred question, Mr. Mohan Naidu said the Puducherry airport was currently connected to Hyderabad and Bengaluru. To the MP's query on whether the Union government proposed measures for operating flights from Puducherry to Kochi and Shirdi in view of a large number of people travelling to these places, the Civil Aviation Minister said airlines were free to decide on markets/routes following the deregulation of the aviation sector in the country. 'With the repeal of Air Corporation Act in March 1994, the Indian domestic aviation has been deregulated. Airlines are free to induct capacity with any aircraft type, free to select whatever markets and network/route they wish to service, depending on their commercial and operational feasibility,' the Minister said in his reply.

'We Stand By The Truth': Aviation Minister Slams Western Media Over Air India Crash 'Narrative'
Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu addressed the Rajya Sabha about the Air India crash, criticising Western media for blaming pilots and emphasising transparency. Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu on Monday addressed the Rajya Sabha regarding the ongoing investigation into the tragic Air India crash near Ahmedabad on July 12, which left 241 passengers dead and caused additional casualties on the ground. Naidu slammed western media for blaming the pilots for the crash, adding the exact reasons will be out in the final investigation report. Responding to questions surrounding the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau's (AAIB) preliminary findings, Naidu emphasised that the investigation is being conducted in line with international aviation protocols and is being handled with complete transparency. 'This report can't address all the questions," Naidu said while referring to the preliminary AAIB document. 'What AAIB has done is to address what happened. For definite answers, we should wait for the final report. AAIB is investigating the matter transparently." Highlighting a significant development in India's aviation investigation capabilities, Naidu noted, 'It was for the first time the black box was decoded in the country. India took a stand that the whole decoding process will happen in India." He added that subject experts, including international specialists, are actively involved in the process. Naidu also took strong exception to the way some Western media outlets have covered the crash. 'Western media is trying to give their own narrative," he said, cautioning against speculative reporting. 'We have to stand by truth." view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Centre slams western media for 'vested' probe coverage
New Delhi: Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu on Sunday said that the Union government will wait for the final report on the Air India crash in Ahmedabad before making any conclusions. The minister urged the western media to avoid speculation and lauded the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) for successfully decoding the black box data in India. 'AAIB has made an appeal to all, especially Western media houses, which may have a vested interest in the kind of articles they are trying to publish. I believe in AAIB. I believe in the work that they are doing. They have done a wonderful job in decoding the whole black box and getting the data out in India itself,' Naidu said. He called it a major achievement, pointing out that earlier, the black box had to be sent abroad to retrieve data. 'It was a huge success for us because previous incidents, whenever the black box was seen to be damaged, it was always sent abroad to get the data out. " "But this is the first time that successfully AAIB has decoded everything. The data has been here. The preliminary report has also been seen,' the minister remarked. Calling for caution until the investigation is complete, the minister said drawing conclusions at this stage would be inappropriate. 'Making any comments until the final report has come, I don't think it is a good exercise on behalf of anyone. We are also very cautious and studying the report thoroughly, and whatever necessary needs to be done in terms of safety, we are ready to do it,' said the Civil Aviation Minister. He reiterated the need for patience and affirmed the government's commitment to aviation safety. 'Regarding the incident and investigation, we have to wait for the final report before we say anything.' The AAIB is currently reviewing the circumstances surrounding the Air India crash that took place in Ahmedabad on June 12. The preliminary findings are under examination, and the final report is expected to offer a clearer picture of the causes and necessary safety interventions.
