Kiyan Anthony Talks Bronny James' Nepo Baby Pressure: 'I Kind Of Felt Bad For Him'
We've already seen NBA players of yesteryear produce NBA-worthy talent in the likes of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and more, but now, it's time for the next generation. Leading that cohort is, of course, Bronny James, who's currently his father's Los Angeles Lakers teammate, and next up from that era is Carmelo Anthony's son Kiyan. The younger Anthony recently sat on his dad's podcast at 7PM in Brooklyn to talk about the pressures of following in his dad's footsteps and the nepo baby allegations. He was joined by newly minted rookie Dylan Harper, son of five-time NBA Champion Ron Harper. ' Bronny [James] , I kind of felt bad for him, that's my guy. He doesn't speak a lot, he's not gonna go on the internet and say what he's gotta say, but like deep down, like behind closed doors, he probably was going through it,' Kiyan said. He continues, 'Like you're seeing this every day, you're on social media, you can't even scroll twice without seeing a post with your name on it.' What seems to baffle Kiyan the most is those who think he didn't deserve to be the 55th pick, and defends his talent. 'At the end of the day, he's nice… People trying to say he's not good… I think he's really nice and I think he really has a chance to prosper in the NBA,' he adds. Carmelo adds that despite all the external pressures, NBA kids are just focused on silencing the noise and balling out instead. 'It's very difficult for them, but I will give them credit because they really don't give a f-ck as much as everybody else give a f-ck,' Melo said. A major difference between Bronny and LeBron is that he didn't skip college and instead went to USC for a year, but his lone season was a bit complicated after he suffered cardiac arrest, which slowed his basketball progression. As for Kiyan, he's following Melo's lead. After graduating from Long Island Lutheran High School last month, he'll be heading upstate New York to join the Syracuse Orange basketball team, where former head coach Jim Boheim still has influence as the Special Assistant to the Athletic Director. Syracuse offered Anthony a scholarship two years ago, along with 17 other schools, including Tennessee, Rutgers, Auburn, USC, Arizona State, and Ohio State. Kiyan Anthony let his true feelings about being Carmelo Anthony's son known in a candid conversation with the NBA Hall of Famer
Kiyan Anthony and Carmelo Anthony. Image via: David Dow/NBAE via Getty Images In a heartfelt episode of The Instagram Podcast on YouTube, NBA legend Carmelo Anthony sat down for a rare and personal conversation with his son, Kiyan Anthony. The Syracuse-bound high school star opened up about life on and off the court, offering an unfiltered perspective on what it truly feels like to carry the last name "Anthony. " The discussion, while light-hearted at times, ventured into their personal territory, offering a glimpse into the pressures, expectations, and ambitions that come with being the son of a basketball icon. Kiyan Anthony reacted to the pressure of being Carmelo Anthony's son Kiyan Anthony's response to his father's pointed question about living under the label of 'Melo's son' was as grounded as it was mature. When Carmelo asked, 'A lot of people say you, you know, we have this kind of tag against us, and you especially as Melo's son. How does that make you feel?' — Kiyan candidly responded, sharing his true feelings about the weight of the name he carries. Carmelo and Kiyan | Close Friends Only with Instagram "I don't really got a problem with it to be honest," Kiyan responded. "I feel like anybody would want to be Melo's son. So at the end of the day, I'm my own person. I got to do my own things um on and off the court. So what the people don't see is just on the court just the hard work, the training and all of that. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo And then off the court I feel like we have similar personalities but at the same time we two different people so can't label me as just Melo's son. " While Kiyan is proud of his father and blessed to be Melo's son, he also has the innate desire for individuality. It is a duality that many children of famous athletes often wrestle with, quite similar to Bronny James' inherent tag of being LeBron James' son. Kiyan is aware of the privilege, but he's also focused on carving out his own path, following his father's legacy but creating his own basketball name for himself. The exchange took a thoughtful turn when Kiyan flipped the script and asked his father, 'When you was my age, what was you trying to prove to everybody?' Carmelo's answer was telling of the generational drive. 'That's a good question,' Melo acknowledged quickly. 'When I was your age, I think I was trying to prove that I belong. I wanted to prove to myself, too, like I can do it… I had to prove myself, right?" he added. Kiyan with La La and Carmelo Anthony. Image via: Getty Images As the next chapter of his basketball journey begins at Syracuse, Kiyan Anthony, son of NBA legend Carmelo Anthony and actress La La Anthony , is stepping into the spotlight with more than just game-day goals. While many prospects focus strictly on the court, Kiyan has been building something bigger: his personal brand. As he prepares for his college basketball debut, Kiyan is shaping his own identity and building a strong online presence, proving he's more than just 'Carmelo's son.' Kiyan Anthony opens up about identity, influence, and life beyond the court Kiyan Anthony is set to move into Syracuse on June 1, but he's planning to arrive a few days early to get acclimated. 'I'm looking forward to it. I feel like it's about to be lit over there,' he said enthusiastically, adding, 'About to try to win some games.' Though excited, he acknowledged the pressure that comes with a large audience: 'Not nervous, but just the crowd is different... there's going to be a lot of people there, a lot of eyes on me. ' But it's not just the college crowds he's preparing for. Kiyan has been intentionally shaping how the world sees him, on and off the court. Surprisingly, he wasn't active on social media until 2023. 'So like I never really had social media... I think I'm at a million [followers] in like two years,' he shared. The rapid growth came through a mix of on-court performance and high-profile family visibility. 'Being with my parents, being with people. .. that other people already know—I feel like that helped.' Kiyan Anthony On Building His Brand, His Own Legacy & Being Melo's Son Kiyan's digital presence is about more than basketball highlights. He uses Instagram to show his style and interests. 'Most athletes use Instagram just for their sport. But I feel like I use social media more for like the fashion side, more for the deals I'm getting... just so people don't, you know, fall in love with me on the court, but also have a connection with me off the court.' With his eye on long-term success, Kiyan has also been focusing on physical development. 'Really just the physical part, like just being in the weight room, getting stronger... me staying on the court is going to come,' he said, underscoring the balance between skill and stamina. Perhaps most importantly, Kiyan wants his name to stand on its own. 'It just automatically creates like my own name. So instead of being somebody's son, it's automatically like just me... I try to advocate for myself, just trying to create my own name and create my own lane.'
