No crocheting this time but leadership on the pitch - Germany's Bühl
Germany's Klara Buehl (L) points to a wristband with the inscription "GG7" for her injured teammate Giulia Gwinn as she celebrates a goal that was disallowed for offside during the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 Group C soccer match between Germany and Denmark at St. Jakob-Park. Sebastian Christoph Gollnow/dpa Winger Klara Bühl may have not found the net yet at women's Euro 2025, but she has already shown her importance for the team of record champions Germany and has a score to settle from 2022. Bühl is playing in a fifth major tournament despite her young age of 24. She was named Player of the Match in Tuesday's 2-1 victory over Denmark which clinched a place in the quarter-finals. Advertisement She now wants to help the team more than at the last edition in 2022 in England where a coronavirus infection denied her playing in the semi-final and in the final Germany lost again England. "You want to bring in your strength, have an impact. That was taken away from me at the last Euros. I hope I can help the team from the beginning until the end this time," she said. Bühl is happy with the way she has started into the tournament which Germany opened 2-0 against Poland. They complete the group stage on Saturday against Sweden in a duel for first place, which will be Bühl's 70th cap. "Today I simply had a lot of fun being on the pitch with the girls again. I had many moments. And I think I'm charging my batteries with every action," she said after the Denmark match. Advertisement Bühl plays at German league and cup champions Bayern Munich where she recently renewed her contract, despite alleged interest from Spanish giants Barcelona which she said made her "very proud." In the German camp, they are delighted to have Bühl in fine form. "I think we have now really seen what an important role Klara has in this team with her dynamics, her power and her one-on-one situations," women's national team sporting director Nia Künzer said. "She is not in the captain's role or anything like that. But I think she shows in her own way that she takes responsibility - on and off the pitch. Advertisement "She is simply very positive, as is her charisma. That helps the team. Although she's not that old, she's already one of the more experienced players and sets the tone. We've seen how she's led the way." Coach Christian Wück is also impressed, and along with injured captain Guilia Gwinn, highlighted what separates Bühl from others. "I don't know anyone who is as two-footed as Klara. Very, very few have this quality in the women's and men's game," Wuck said. Gwinn recently said when asked who had the fiercest shot in the team: "Klara Bühl - with both feet." Advertisement Off the pitch, Bühl got plenty of attention in social media for her crocheting skills in the form of team mascots at the 2023 World Cup and last year's Olympics. But there is no time for this in Switzerland where Bühl also underwent her - remote - oral exam for her bachelor degree in media management three days before the first match. Bühl has said the degree will help her for the future, her thesis being: Marketing opportunities for professional women's footballers.

Germany surf wave of travelling support to book Euro 2025 knockout spot
OBERENTFELDEN, Switzerland :Germany may not be hosting the Women's Euros but they certainly felt like the home team in neighbouring Switzerland as their massive travelling support roared them on in a 2-1 win over Denmark that helped them progress to the knockout stage. The St. Jakob-Park stadium in Basel was awash with German fans waving flags and wearing their white home shirts, and they responded to Denmark taking the lead by becoming even louder as Sjoeke Nuesken and Lea Schueller scored second-half goals to complete the turnaround. "It was very, very tough for us. It felt like we struggled to find our way into the game, so we had to work very hard to get the win," said Nuesken, who took over as penalty-taker in the absence of the injured Giulia Gwinn and fired home the equaliser from the spot. "(The crowd) was incredible; it felt like a home game. There were a lot of Germany fans, which made us very happy as they helped to push us on. We could really hear how loud they were." For Tuesday's game, fans began flocking to Basel, which is located close to both the German and French borders, early in the day, ensuring the Germans enjoyed a majority in the stands. "It was crazy, because it felt like a home game with a lot of Germany fans," midfielder Klara Buehl said. "It's so cool to see how many people are in the stands and support women's football, support us and celebrate with us. That's the most important thing, and we are really happy about that."

Soccer-VAR needs to make quicker decisions, says Germany coach Wueck
BASEL, Switzerland (Reuters) -Two lengthy video reviews halted the momentum of Germany's 2-1 victory over Denmark on Tuesday at Euro 2025 and had German fans at St Jakob-Park whistling and jeering the officials over the delays. There were long stoppages for both first-half VAR decisions against Germany, with seven minutes of time added on before the halftime break. Germany had celebrated what they thought was the opening goal by Klara Buehl and players from both teams were lined up to restart the game when the goal was disallowed after VAR determined it was offside after three minutes of deliberation. The Germans were also awarded a first-half penalty by the referee due to a Denmark handball but the decision was overturned after another lengthy VAR review. Germany were awarded another penalty in the 56th minute for a tackle in the box, but it took almost two-and-a-half minutes for the referee to point to the spot. Sjoeke Nuesken slotted her spot-kick into the bottom corner for Germany's first goal of the game. "I don't know if the decisions were right or wrong, but the system, football has to think about how they can speed that up," Germany coach Christian Wueck said. "The goal wasn't allowed, and then the penalty wasn't given. We have to take steps to make those decisions faster." During Sweden's win over Denmark in the tournament, there was a review lasting over four minutes to decide whether Denmark should be awarded a penalty. Following the review, Sweden were awarded a free kick. VAR was first introduced into women's football at Euro 2022. The group stage at the current tournament has VAR and an assistant, and an extra assistant will be added from the quarter-final stage. (Reporting by Lori Ewing, editing by Ed Osmond)
