Amid the Kochi Tuskers buzz, can Kerala have another go at IPL?
When the season started this year, the Indian Premier League (IPL) conducted an event called the 'IPL Fan Park' in Kochi. The initiative was aimed at bringing a real-time IPL experience to fans in cities where matches are not held. The event took place in the parking lot of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, where fans gathered to virtually witness two IPL matches. But things were different 14 years ago. In the fourth season of the IPL, the state had a team of its own. Kochi Tuskers Kerala (KTK), an ill-fated IPL team that got ousted just a year after its induction. In 2010, when two new franchises were introduced in the IPL, a group of bidders came together to form a team representing Kerala. The much-celebrated team boasted a star-studded lineup, including Mahela Jayawardene, Muttiah Muralitharan, Brendon McCullum, V V S Laxman, R P Singh, Ravindra Jadeja and S Sreesanth.

Bombay High Court orders BCCI to pay 538 crore to Kochi Tuskers owners
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 19 (ANI): The Bombay High Court on Wednesday upheld the arbitral awards issued in 2015, directing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to pay a total of Rs 538.84 crore in compensation following the termination of the Kochi Tuskers Kerala franchise from the Indian Premier League (IPL), as per ESPNcricinfo. As per the court's ruling, the BCCI must pay Rs 385.50 crore to Kochi Cricket Private Limited (KCPL) and Rs 153.34 crore to Rendezvous Sports World (RSW), the two stakeholders of the now-defunct franchise. Kochi Tuskers Kerala competed in just one IPL season, in 2011, finishing eighth out of ten teams. The franchise was terminated by the BCCI in September that year for allegedly breaching contractual terms by failing to furnish a bank guarantee within the specified timeframe. This led to a lengthy legal battle, culminating in arbitration, which ultimately went in favour of KCPL and RSW. The team, captained by Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene, registered six wins and eight losses during their sole campaign. The squad featured high-profile players including New Zealand's Brendon McCullum, legendary Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, and Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. 'The jurisdiction of this Court under Section 34 of the Arbitration Act is very limited,' Justice Riyaz I. Chagla said in his order, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. 'BCCI's endeavour to delve into the merits of the dispute is in teeth of the scope of the grounds contained in Section 34 of the Act. BCCI's dissatisfaction as to the findings rendered in respect of the evidence and/or the merits cannot be a ground to assail the Award,' he added. 'The conclusion of the learned Arbitrator namely that BCCI had wrongfully invoked the bank guarantee which amounted to a repudiatory breach of the KCPL-FA would call for no interference under Section 34 of the Arbitration Act considering that this is based on a correct appreciation of the evidence on record,' he noted. Six weeks of time have been granted to the BCCI to file an appeal. (ANI)

Massive Blow To BCCI, Asked To Pay Rs 538 Crore By Bombay High Court. Details Here
The Bombay High Court has upheld the arbitral, directing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to pay Rs 538 crore to the now defunct IPL franchise Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Kochi Tuskers Kerala was terminated by the BCCI in 2011 after playing just one season. The BCCI had terminated the franchise after just one season (2011), accusing the team of a contract breach after failing to submit a bank guarantee on time, which was required under the agreement. "The jurisdiction of this Court under Section 34 of the Arbitration Act is very limited. BCCI's endeavour to delve into the merits of the dispute, is in teeth of the scope of the grounds contained in Section 34 of the Act. BCCI's dissatisfaction as to the findings rendered in respect of the evidence and/or the merits cannot be a ground to assail the Award," the court said in its ruling. In 2015, the BCCI was asked to pay Rs 550 crore -- 384 crore to KCPL and 153 crore to Rendenzvous sport -- to IPL franchise Kochi Tuskers after an arbitration ruled in favour of the team recently. The BCCI had challenged the tribunal's verdict in court. "We have got arbitrator Lahoti's report. The majority of the members are of the opinion of appealing against arbitrator's report. We are seeking legal opinion," the then IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla told PTI after a Governing Council meeting. The franchise which was bought for a whooping Rs 1,550 crore a year ago defaulted on their annual payment after which the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) terminated their contract in 2011. The franchise won the case against the BCCI and the court ordered the board to pay Rs 550 crore. In their only season, the franchise finished eighth in the 10-team table after winning six out of 14 league games. Besides Hodge, Mahela Jayawardene, Brendon McCullum and Ravindra Jadeja all featured for the franchise in their only IPL season. (With Agency Inputs)

Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashes 30 runs off Karim Janat's over, enters IPL's most expensive overs list
Since its inception in 2008, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed some unforgettable batting onslaughts, each more devastating than the other. However, it was Royal Challengers Bengaluru's Harshal Patel and the now-defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala's Prasanth Parameswaran who were at the receiving end of two of the most brutal assaults ever witnessed in IPL cricket matches. Harshal Patel and Prasanth Parameswaran jointly hold the record for the most expensive over in IPL history, with each having conceded 37 runs, almost 10 years apart. Prasanth Parameswaran, playing for Kochi Tuskers Kerala in IPL 2011, had the misfortune of bowling to one Chris Gayle, who was in full flow and took the left-arm seamer to the cleaners in the third over of the innings. The RCB opener, in his signature belligerent style, dispatched Parameswaran for 6, 6 (no-ball), 4, 4, 6, 6, 4 — stacking up 37 runs in the seven-ball over. Gayle's rampage helped RCB chase down Kochi's modest 125-run target with ease, sealing a nine-wicket win. Almost a decade later, in IPL 2021, RCB's Harshal Patel was met with a similar fate while playing against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Bowling the final over of a league stage match, Harshal Patel was subject to a brutal thrashing by Ravindra Jadeja, who unleashed pure carnage. The CSK all-rounder clobbered five sixes, a four, and a double in a seven-ball over that read: 6, 6, 6 (no-ball), 6, 2, 6, 4. Jadeja's fireworks propelled CSK to 191/4, ultimately securing a commanding 69-run victory. Incidentally, Harshal Patel would go on to win the Purple Cap that season with 32 wickets from 15 matches and was also named the Most Valuable Player of the campaign. His haul from that season remains tied with Dwayne Bravo's record for most wickets in a single IPL edition. Karim Janat joins the list after Vaibhav Suryavanshi's onslaught In IPL 2025, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a 14-year-old sensation, smashed Karim Janat for a brutal 30 runs in a single over during an explosive innings. The over went: 6, 4, 4, 6, 4, 6, with a flurry of powerful shots that left everyone, including teammates and fans, in awe. Although not as expensive as the 37-run overs by Harshal Patel and Parameswaran, Karim Janat's 30-run over now finds its place among the most expensive overs in IPL history. Suryavanshi's fearless hitting, at such a young age, has caught the attention of the cricket world, with experts praising his incredible composure and talent under pressure. Most expensive overs in IPL history: *Deccan Chargers vs Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals)
