China faces austerity dilemma as dining crackdown risks economic hit

DALIAN, China -- Efforts by the ruling Chinese Communist Party to stop public officials from splurging on lavish meals are being taken further than intended, fueling concern about the impact on the restaurant industry.
The Chinese authorities in mid-May updated rules aimed at encouraging frugality and preventing waste and corruption, a longtime goal of President Xi Jinping's government. The regulations ban party members and government officials from providing high-end food, alcohol or cigarettes at official receptions.
