A generation later their grandson, Arch Aplin III, was born and would go on to open his own gas station. Inspired by his dog and using his own nick name, the iconic name Buc-ee's came to fruition. Although it started as a fairly standard convenience store, Arch made it his own, installing brass ceiling fans and using rough oak to line the upper walls. Breakfast became a staple after opening the second Buc-ee's in 1985, thanks to an on-site kitchen where staff prepared sandwiches, tacos, and donuts for patrons. This store marked the beginning of a large expansion that unfolded over the next two decades. The chain evolved, adding clothing and other merchandise as more Buc-ee's locations opened across Brazoria county. Buc-ee's Is Eyeing This City For First Southwest Florida Location
Southwest Florida may be getting a new place to pick up some favorite $5 or less snacks. Buc-ee's, the South's best travel stop, is reportedly eyeing a new location in the Sunshine State. While the beloved Beaver Nugget-and-jerky peddlers (and gas station) have just announced an opening date for a Gulf Coast outpost, they are continuing to spread across the South. Gulfshore Business reports that Buc-ee's may be looking into opening a spot near Port Charlotte, Florida, on Interstate 75 between Sarasota and Fort Myers. The giant travel center would be the fourth Buc-ee's location in Florida, as there are currently spots in Daytona Beach and Saint Augustine and a still-under-construction spot in Ocala, scheduled to possibly open by the end of the year. Travelers may love Buc-ee's for its many, many gas pumps, clean bathrooms, and incredible snack options, but local residents may not be big fans. According to the Houston Chronicle, when news broke that Buc-ee's was looking into the new Florida location some folks were not exactly rolling out the welcome mat. "Please don't do this to our community ... It will be a disaster," one resident told WINK-TV, a Fort Myers news outlet. Kolache fans headed to Florida's Gulf Coast shouldn't get too excited yet, though. The Chronicle makes it clear that while the community board has made some zoning changes and approvals to accommodate Buc-ee's if they choose to open in the area, the Lone Star state's favorite gas station hasn't made the new location official.
