BINTULU (July 3): Sarawak's top vocational talents have been urged to aim for excellence and bring home the Golden Hands Award (Anugerah Tangan Emas) at the upcoming Kolej Vokasional (KV) Skills National-Level competition 2025, to be held this September. Chairman of the Sarawak Zone Council of KV/SMT Principals and Directors, Jamali Muhamad, said the mission is clear ― to secure the Golden Hands Award for the very first time. 'We hope this year we will see a representative from the Sarawak Zone emerge victorious in several national-level categories. It is not impossible ― we've done well before, but we've yet to win the Golden Hands Award,' he said during the KV Skills Zone Sarawak 2025 closing ceremony at KV Bintulu here yesterday. The event was officiated by Steven Kong Kai Seng, special officer to the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. Jamali also highlighted the strong track record of KV institutions in graduate employability, noting that they often rank among the highest nationwide. He added that the government has provided substantial grants to ensure the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) becomes the first choice, rather than an alternative, for students. 'Our KV students are contributing meaningfully to national development. They are the driving force to elevate TVET as the top educational pathway,' he said. He also encouraged parents to expose their children to TVET opportunities from an early stage, as it offers a solid foundation for careers in various growing sectors. This year, 13 outstanding students have been selected to represent Sarawak at the national-level competition, which will be held in Melaka and Negeri Sembilan this September. Meanwhile, KV Bintulu director Sahibi Salleh expressed appreciation for the opportunity to host the KV Skills Zone Sarawak 2025 competition, describing it as a meaningful platform to elevate technical and vocational excellence among students. He underscored the importance of the event as a stage to showcase the potential of vocational college students across a wide range of technical disciplines. 'This competition not only enhances technical skills, but also fosters innovation, teamwork, and collaboration among students,' he said. Sahibi further noted that such platforms are essential in assessing students' mastery of their fields while instilling the work ethic required to succeed in real-world industrial environments. 'It is through competitions like this that we cultivate the excellence, discipline, and professionalism needed to thrive in today's competitive industries,' he concluded. BINTULU (July 2): Skills are no longer a secondary option but have become a mainstream pathway toward building a sustainable and competitive future, said Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. His remarks were delivered by his special officer, Steven Kong Kai Seng, during the closing and prize-giving ceremony of the Kolej Vokasional (KV) Skills Zone Sarawak 2025 competition at KV Bintulu today. 'In today's increasingly competitive world, a skilled workforce is the backbone of national development,' he said. Tiong noted that in Sarawak, job opportunities in skilled sectors are vast, ranging from construction and automotive to maintenance, electrical, mechanical, hospitality, tourism, and digital technology. These industries, he said, are rapidly growing and require local youth equipped with hands-on expertise. Tiong, who is also Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, highlighted that Sarawak is actively developing key sectors including renewable energy, the hydrogen economy, petrochemicals, sustainable tourism, and the digital economy – all of which require the involvement of highly skilled young professionals. 'Graduates from vocational colleges are not only employable; they also have the potential to become technical entrepreneurs, licensed technicians, industrial service providers, and even workshop or business owners,' he added. Commenting on the significance of the KV Skills competition, Tiong said such events serve not just as platforms to showcase talent and creativity but also train students to be innovative, disciplined, and ready to face real-world industrial challenges. He expressed hope that the students would continue to have confidence in their vocational path, using their skills as key to entering an increasingly competitive job market. 'Participate in more competitions, undergo industrial training, and innovate not just for yourselves, but to contribute to Sarawak's progress,' he urged. A total of 13 talented vocational students have been selected to represent Sarawak in the KV Skills 2025 national-level competition, scheduled for September in Melaka and Negeri Sembilan. They earned their spots by winning respective categories at the Sarawak zone event. Among them, Alif Mikael Abu Bakar from KV Matang s stood out, capturing both the 'Anugerah Tangan Emas' (Golden Hands Award) and the top prize in the Automotive Technology category. July 23 verdict for 13 teens charged with murder of Lahad Datu vocational college student

TAWAU, June 11 — The High Court today postponed to July 23 its decision on the case involving 13 male students of Kolej Vokasional Lahad Datu, who are jointly charged with the murder of their college mate Mohamad Nazmie Aizzat Mohd Narul Azwan, last year. The verdict, initially scheduled for today, was postponed to allow for clarification related to the submissions, according to deputy public prosecutor, Nur Nisla Abdul Latif. She said that both prosecution and defence had filed their written submissions. The prosecution had filed a total of 366 pages of written submission. 'The defence team, comprising eight lawyers, has also filed their submissions,' she told reporters at the High Court, here, today. On May 14, High Court Judge Datuk Duncan Sikodol had set today to decide on the Mohamad Nazmie Aizzat murder case. However, a notice issued by the High Court yesterday (June 10) informed parties of the rescheduling. On February 28, Duncan ordered the 13 teenagers, aged 16 to 19, to enter their defence on the charge of murdering Mohamad Nazmie Aizzat, 17, in the dormitory rooms 7 Resak and 5 Belian at the Lahad Datu Vocational College, between 9pm on March 21 and 7.38am on March 22, 2024. They were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, read together with Section 34 of the same Code which carries the death penalty, or up to 40 years' imprisonment and not more than 12 strokes of the cane, if convicted. The defence proceedings began on March 10, with 18 witnesses, including all 13 accused, called to testify. The prosecution had earlier opened its case on November 19 last year, calling 25 witnesses, including students and teachers from the vocational college. Apart from Nur Nisla, the prosecution team also includes DPPs Ng Juhn Tao and Batrisyia Mohd Khusri. Eight of the students were represented by lawyers Datuk Ram Singh, Kamarudin Mohmad Chinki and Chen Wen Jye, while five others were represented by lawyers Mohamed Zairi Zainal Abidin, Abdul Ghani Zelika, Vivian Thien, Jhesseny P. Kang and Kusni Ambotuwo. — Bernama
