Fresh anger in Kolkata as law student gang-raped, just half-a-year after doctor's rapist get life sentence
NEW DELHI, June 28 — Indian police have arrested three men accused of gang raping a law student in Kolkata, officials said yesterday, a case that has reignited anger in a city still scarred by the rape and murder of a doctor last year. The survivor said she was assaulted on Wednesday evening inside a room on the college premises, Indian media reported, with the three accused including two current and one former student. The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), the ruling party in West Bengal state, said the 'full weight of the law will be brought to bear'. The case again highlights the chronic issue of sexual violence in the world's most populous country, where an average of nearly 90 rapes a day were reported in 2022. It has also sparked fresh political clashes between the AITC and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP accused the AITC-led state government of failing to protect women. West Bengal had become a 'breeding ground for crimes against women', the BJP said in a statement. 'State machinery continues to fail its daughters'. The AITC rejected the accusations. The assault comes after a Kolkata court in January sentenced the rapist and murderer of a 31-year-old doctor to life in prison. Her killing in August 2024 at a state-run hospital in Kolkata triggered protests, with candlelight marches and nationwide outrage over the continuing violence against women. The brutality of that attack drew comparisons to the 2012 gang rape and murder of a young woman on a bus in New Delhi, a crime that shocked the country and led to widespread demonstrations. — AFP

Digha (West Bengal) [India], June 27 (ANI): The first-ever Rath Yatra at the Lord Jagannath temple in Digha is set to begin soon on a 1 km route on Friday. ISKCON Kolkata Vice President Radharamn Das said the festival is inspired by the Puri Rath Yatra and added that West Bengal Chief Minister will join the event at 2 pm. Speaking to ANI, Radharamn Das said, 'Digha Jagannath Yatra is inspired by Puri Rath Yatra. Here too, the chariots of the deities have been made similar to those in Puri. In a few moments, the Lord will come to his chariot, and the Rath Yatra will begin. The Chief Minister will come here at 2 pm.' At ISKCON Kolkata, Lord Jagannath, along with his brother Lord Balabhadra and sister Goddess Subhadra, is being ceremoniously taken to their chariots as part of the Rath Yatra celebrations. A sea of devotees gathered outside the Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri as the grand annual Rath Yatra festival began today. People from across the country arrived to witness the grand chariots of the three deities, Lord Jagannath, his brother Lord Balabhadra, and sister goddess Subhadra, at the Gundicha temple, where the deities reside for a week and then return to Jagannath temple. Speaking to ANI, Pooja Anand, a devotee from Mumbai, shared her emotions while witnessing the yatra for the first time. 'I have come from Mumbai. It is an out-of-this-world experience. I have been a devotee for 20 years, but this is my first time here. It is a divine experience. I want to pull the chariot. This is one day of the year when the Lord comes out of his abode and blesses the 'jagat', the universe. Everyone should come here and seek blessings. The weather here is very pleasant. 33 year old driver from Tripura treated with Eastern India's first-ever Bachmann's Bundle Pacing

Ravi was suffering from sick sinus syndrome and intermittent atrioventricular (AV) block (a type of heart block where the electrical signals between the heart's upper chambers (atria) and lower chambers (ventricles) are intermittently delayed or blocked), compounded by episodes of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (where episodes of an irregular heartbeat come and go). A condition where the patient's heart rate had dangerously dropped to 25 beats per minute, leaving him dizzy, breathless, and vulnerable to permanent arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat), which could have turned fatal for Ravi. Recognizing the need for a cutting-edge, long-term solution, Dr. Dilip Kumar and his team opted for a revolutionary combination of Bachmann's Bundle (BB) Pacing and Left Bundle Branch Area Pacing (LBBAP), a dual strategy that mimics the heart's natural electrical rhythm. This whole approach, known as complete physiological pacing, is designed to preserve the heart's normal contraction patterns and prevent complications associated with conventional pacemakers, such as heart failure, atrial fibrillation (a heart condition where the heart's upper chambers (atria) beat irregularly and rapidly), as well as pacing-induced cardiomyopathy (a condition where the heart muscle weakens and its ability to pump blood effectively is reduced, specifically as a result of prolonged right ventricular (RV) pacing from a pacemaker). The whole procedure was performed in the cardiac cath lab using the specialized C315S5 catheter. Innovodigm, AuraML, Sthyr Energy Secure Early-Stage Funding for Growth

IAN Leads INR 5.5 Cr Funding in Med-tech Innovodigm Kolkata-based med-tech startup Innovodigm has raised INR 5.5 crore in a seed funding round led by the IAN Group, which contributed INR 4.5 crore, with the remainder from PadUp Ventures. The funds will be deployed toward process optimization, infrastructure scaling, and team expansion in preparation for third-party preclinical validation and upcoming clinical trials. Speciale Invest Leads USD 1 Mn Round in Sthyr Energy Sthyr Energy, a Chennai-based deeptech startup, has raised USD 1 million in a seed funding round led by Speciale Invest, with participation from Antares Ventures. The funds will be used to advance R&D, pilot projects, and scale production of its innovative zinc-air battery systems, the company announced. "We're excited to partner with Speciale Invest and Antares Ventures to take our technology from lab to grid," said Gunjan Kapadia, Co-founder and CEO. "Our batteries aim to provide energy security in a net-zero world—storing summer's solar energy for winter and delivering over 100 hours of backup power." Founded in 2024 by Gunjan Kapadia, Akhil Kongara, and Muhammed Hamdan, Sthyr Energy is building mechanically rechargeable 200 kWh Zinc-Air battery systems and 10 kW zinc regeneration units designed for seasonal storage and fossil-free power backups.
