Malaysian woman working in Singapore steals over RM180k from workplace, spends majority on online gambling

PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian woman working as a cashier at a mini-mart in Singapore was recently charged in court for stealing over RM180,000 from her workplace over a period of six months. According to Mothership, the 37-year-old woman, identified as Kon Chin Sia, had spent most of the stolen money – amounting to S$56,797 (approximately RM187,592) – on online gambling. The offences were committed between April and October 2024. Investigations revealed that the mini-mart manager had started to notice a consistent decline in sales, which he initially attributed to poor business. However, he later observed that sales revenue dropped by S$600 (RM1,981) to S$700 (RM2,312) specifically during Kon's shifts. Feeling suspicious, the manager reviewed the shop's CCTV footage from 30 September to 27 October 2024, and observed that when customers paid in cash, Kon would stash some of the money into a nearby drawer after handing them their change. Kon would then void the transactions to cover her tracks. When confronted by the manager, Kon immediately confessed, admitting that she had been stealing money since April 2024. She explained that she would take S$500 (RM1,651) to S$600 per shift, and deposit the money into her personal bank account. Despite her confession, the manager gave her an opportunity to repay the stolen amount — but she failed to do so. In December 2024, the manager filed a police report against her. Kon was subsequently dismissed from her position. She was charged with criminal breach of trust and was sentenced to 17 months in prison on Monday (July 14).

Jurong minimart cashier jailed for stealing nearly S$57,000 to fund online gambling

SINGAPORE: A cashier at a Jurong minimart has been sentenced to 17 months' jail after stealing nearly S$57,000 from her employer to fund online gambling. The theft came to light after the manager of the minimart, located at Block 651 Jurong West Street 61, noticed a consistent drop in daily sales beginning in April 2024. Initially attributing the decline to a general business slowdown, the manager later observed a pattern—sales consistently fell by around S$600 to S$700 on days when 37-year-old Kon Chin Sia was on duty. The manager then reviewed CCTV footage from 30 September to 27 October 2024. The recordings revealed that Kon had been pocketing cash from customers and placing it into a drawer instead of the cash register. She would later transfer the money into her bank account. When confronted, Kon admitted to embezzling about S$500 to S$600 per shift. According to Shin Min Daily News, she had worked at the minimart for over seven years and was previously regarded as a hardworking staff member. Given her long service, the manager initially gave her a chance to repay the stolen funds, but after she failed to do so, the police were notified. Kon was subsequently dismissed. After her departure, several regular customers approached the minimart to enquire about her whereabouts, with some claiming she had borrowed over S$100 from them. In court, Kon faced two charges of criminal breach of trust and pleaded guilty to one on 14 July, with the second taken into consideration. Bank records showed she had stolen a total of S$56,797, most of which was spent on online gambling. During mitigation, her lawyer pointed out that Kon had no prior criminal record. Additionally, her family was heavily in debt at the time and had an unwell family member. The defence also noted that Kon, a Malaysian national, would be deported after serving her sentence, which they cited as a form of additional punishment. They therefore pleaded for leniency in sentencing. However, the prosecution argued that Kon had committed the offence repeatedly over multiple shifts, undermining the claim that she was a first-time offender. They sought a sentence of 18 to 20 months' imprisonment, emphasising that most of the stolen money had been gambled away. The judge ultimately sentenced Kon to 17 months in jail.

Malaysian cashier in Singapore steals over RM185,000 from minimart, blows it on online gambling

SINGAPORE, July 16 — A 37-year-old Malaysian cashier who stole close to S$57,000 (RM188,600) from a minimart in Jurong West, Singapore over six months to fuel her online gambling habit has been sentenced to 17 months' jail. Kon Chin Sia had been employed at Li Li Cheng Minimart at Block 651 Jurong West Street 61 when the offences took place between April and October 2024, Mothership reported. The store's manager initially attributed falling sales to poor business, but grew suspicious when the daily takings consistently dropped only during Kon's shifts. According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Joseph Gwee, the shortfalls ranged between S$600 and S$700 each time she was on duty. To investigate, the manager reviewed CCTV footage recorded between September 30 and October 27, 2024. He observed that after collecting payment and giving change to customers, Kon would leave the till open and transfer cash to a separate drawer beside the register. At the end of her shift, she would pocket the hidden cash and later void the transactions. When confronted, Kon admitted to the thefts, revealing that she had been taking cash from the register daily since April 2024. She would typically steal S$500 to S$600 each shift and deposit the money into her bank account via ATM. Despite being given a chance to return the stolen money, Kon failed to make any restitution. On December 20, 2024, the manager filed a police report and terminated her employment. The court heard that she had misappropriated a total of S$56,797, most of which was spent on online gambling. The prosecution noted that she 'has not made a cent of restitution'. Kon pleaded guilty to one count of criminal breach of trust and was sentenced on July 14, 2025. A second charge — for using an unlicensed gambling service — was taken into consideration. She could have faced up to 15 years in jail and a fine. However, under an amalgamated charge framed under Section 124(4) of the Criminal Procedure Code 2010, she was liable for up to double the imprisonment term.

M'sian woman pockets nearly $57k from Jurong minimart to gamble online

A Malaysian woman working at a minimart in Jurong was caught pocketing nearly $57,000 to fuel her online gambling habit. The embezzlement began last April and went on for about five months, as the minimart's manager had initially thought the decline in daily sales was down to worsening business. Kon Chin Sia, who was considered to be hardworking, was eventually found out thanks to CCTV footage. On July 14, the 37-year-old was jailed 17 months after pleading guilty to one count of criminal breach of trust. A second count was taken into consideration during sentencing. Pocketing cash while on duty Shin Min Daily News reported that Kon had worked at the Block 651 Jurong West Street 61 minimart for seven years. Last September, the minimart manager noticed that whenever Kon was on shift, the sales would decrease by $600 to $700. The manager then reviewed surveillance footage from Sept 30 to Oct 27 and discovered that when customers paid in cash, Kon would put the cash into a drawer instead of the cash register. When the manager confronted Kon, she admitted that she had been misappropriating $500 to $600 every time she was on shift. She would put the money in her pocket before leaving the shop and later deposit the sum into her bank account. Kon was given a chance to make restitution, but failed to do so. The manager then called the police and sacked Kon. According to bank records, a total of $56,797 was deposited into Kon's account. She admitted that the money came from the minimart and said that most of it was spent on online gambling. The prosecution argued that Kon could not be considered a first-time offender as she committed a crime every time she was on shift. It was also highlighted that most of the money stolen was gambled away.
