What Yanic Konan Niederhauser brings to The LA Clippers from Penn State

Last night, history was made for the Penn State Nittany Lions as Yanic Konan Niederhauser, the young Swiss big man, became the first-ever first-round NBA draft pick for the school. Going No. 30 overall to the LA Clippers, many saw Konan Niederhauser as one of the draft's great risers in the past few months. Now that he has found a new home, his fit on the Clippers roster will be heavily scrutinized from the moment he hits the court. For now, the 7-footer profiles to be the backup to breakout star Ivica Zubac, who averaged career highs in both points(16.8) and rebounds(12.6) to bolster a Clippers squad that proved to be deeper than expected. Important depth pieces for the Clippers such as Norman Powell, Bogdan Bogdanovich, and Nicolas Batum. Plus, Konan Niederhauser will also have a fellow former Nittany Lion on the team with him in Seth Lundy, the last Nittany Lion to be drafted before him. And of course, there are the marquee names in Kawhi Leonard and James Harden. Most importantly, Konan Niederhauser will be developed by a coach with a championship pedigree. Tyronn Lue has been with the franchise for six years and has been to the postseason in four of them. However, he is most well-known for leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first NBA title over the 73-win Golden State Warriors. Look for Konan Niederhauser to truly benefit from that kind of leadership. Perhaps the most glowing endorsement of what to expect from Niederhauser in the NBA comes from Penn State assistant coach Brett Scott, "I think his length and athleticism, his mobility. Yanic grew late. He was kind of like a guard, so he grew late, grew like six or seven inches late to be 7-1." Hopefully, all those assets pay off on a Clippers squad that could be sneaky dangerous in the Western Conference next year.

Yanic Konan Niederhauser drafted in 1st round of NBA Draft

Yanic Konan Niederhauser made school history on Wednesday night by becoming the first Penn State basketball player to be selected in the first round of the NBA draft. Niederhauser was the 30th overall pick of the Los Angeles Clippers. Konan Niederhauser is the third Penn State player to be selected in the NBA draft in the past three seasons. He follows in the footsteps of Jalen Pickett (2023 to the Denver Nuggets) and Seth Lundy (2023 to the Atlanta Hawks). Before Konan Niederhauser's first-round selection by the Clippers, Pickett had been the highest-drafted player from the Nittany Lions as the 32nd pick overall in the 2023 NBA draft, in the second round. Konan Niederhauser spent just one season with Penn State as a transfer from Northern Illinois. He averaged 12.9 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per game. He earned All-Big Ten honorable mention recognition and led the conference with 2.31 blocks per game. There seemed to be some question on whether or not he should declare for the NBA draft or not following the season, but he clearly made the right decision after working out at the scouting combine and getting some positive feedback about his results. This is a milestone moment for a Penn State basketball program that has had rare moments in the basketball spotlight, but can be a valuable recruiting tool for head coach Mike Rhoades moving forward. Rhoades is entering his third season under Mike Rhoades, and he is once again rebuilding his roster. Now, with a first-round draft pick under his belt, recruiting players could get a little bit easier. And three draft picks in three seasons is worth bragging about for a program looking to maintain some successful stability in the college basketball world. 2025 NBA Draft scouting report: Yanic Konan Niederhauser, F/C, Penn State

For a two-round mock draft and a big board with full scouting reports, check out my NBA Draft Guide. Yanic Konan Niederhauser, F/C, Penn State Height: 7-0 • Weight: 243 • Class: Junior • Age: 22 Summary: Konan Niederhauser is an elite athlete who lives above the rim as a finisher and shot blocker, and he displays some intriguing upside as a 7-foot shot creator. But he needs to improve his fundamentals to make it all click. Advertisement Comparisons: DeAndre Jordan Strengths At-rim finishing: He's a constant lob threat thanks to his pogo-stick leaping ability, but he also runs the floor hard on the break to make himself available and displays really good touch even when he can't dunk it. Dribble-drive game: He has back-to-the-basket skill, but more interestingly he displays signs of an ability to drive from the perimeter, whether he's attacking closeouts or facing up in the post. He has smooth footwork and slick spin moves that he can use to get into the paint then yam it on defenders. It's sacrilegious to say it looks like young Giannis, but it looks like a young Giannis. The obvious difference is Giannis was already a two-time All-Star by the time he was Konan Niederhauser's age. Advertisement Shooting upside: He made just 21.6% of his 3s in college and just 64.8% of his free throws. But he has such soft touch near the rim it's hard not to wonder if there's a minor mechanical fix that could improve his otherwise smooth shooting release. Shot blocking: Excellent weakside rim protector who rotates over with activity and desire to swat shots into the stands. He also racks up deflections. If his fundamentals and awareness improve, he could become more of a reliable rim protector than a shot blocker. Concerns Frame: He's extremely lean, so the things he did well in college may not work as much in the NBA. And on defense he could get overpowered by heavyweight bigs. Advertisement Fundamentals: He doesn't box out as much as he should, misses rotations on defense, and in general has a raw overall game. He'll likely find himself in foul trouble if he receives heavy minutes early in his career. Passing: He logged only 22 assists to 48 turnovers in his final college season. He lacks passing vision and has far too loose of a handle, so he'd often get stripped on his drives. For a two-round mock draft and a big board with full scouting reports, check out my NBA Draft Guide.
