Cruise ship passengers flood Vancouver during busiest weekend of season
Thousands of cruise ship passengers are making their way through Vancouver this weekend during the busiest weekend of the industry's season. Two ships arrived at Canada Place on Saturday, including Princess Cruises' Sapphire Princess and Holland America Line's Koningsdam. They are some of the 11 ships the Port of Vancouver is welcoming over the last four days of June, with a projected 47,000 visitors on board. The cruise ship terminal was bustling with tourists Saturday, disembarking the vessels and boarding tour buses. Avery Mahony at Mahony's Tavern says her workplace was anticipating a rush from the cruise ship crowd, as it has seen on previous weekends. 'Cruise lines themselves spend around $660 million every cruise season on things like reprovisioning their ships, conducting any sort of maintenance of repairs while in port,' said McKee. 'Passengers spend on average around $450 each on things like local shopping, attractions, restaurants and tours.' Even after this weekend's peak, the Port of Vancouver anticipates 35,000 to 40,000 passengers to pass through Canada Place every weekend through the end of the season. More than 300 ship calls are scheduled at the port during this cruise season, with 1.2 million passengers projected to visit the city.

The U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday rescued and medevaced a cruise ship passenger who experienced multiple strokes south of Oahu. The Coast Guard in Honolulu received notification at 2 :48 p.m. Wednesday from crew aboard the Koningsdam, a Holland America Line cruise ship, that a 72-year-old man had experienced multiple stroke episodes on board. The duty flight surgeon recommended a medevac within 20 hours. The USCG deployed an HC-130 Hercules airplane crew and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point. At 9 a.m. Thursday, both crews reached the Koningsdam about 57 miles south of Honolulu. HONOLULU (KHON2) — A cruise ship passenger was caught 300 miles offshore in a dire situation while on vacation. Download the free KHON2 app for iOS or Android to stay informed on the latest news The U.S. Coast Guard medevacked a 72-year-old man who suffered multiple strokes aboard a cruise ship, about 300 miles off the coast of Kailua-Kona. The Coast Guard received a call at 2:48 p.m. Wednesday from the crew of the Koningsdam, reporting that the passenger had experienced several strokes while offshore. Applications open for affordable senior housing After consulting with a flight surgeon, the Coast Guard determined that the passenger needed to be evacuated within 20 hours. Early Thursday morning, a joint response team from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point launched an airplane and a helicopter to rendezvous with the Koningsdam, approximately 57 miles south of Honolulu. The helicopter crew successfully hoisted the passenger from the ship and transported him to Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
