A Playful Story Collection Unbound From Realism or Form
AN ORAL HISTORY OF ATLANTIS: Stories, by Ed Park Fifteen years after his comical debut novel, 'Personal Days,' skewered white-collar work culture in the midst of the 2008 financial crisis, the writer and editor Ed Park published a second novel that reached beyond mundane office realities. Inventive, dense and more than 500 pages long, 'Same Bed Different Dreams' was a demanding literary collage of spy and metafiction devices, real and manufactured South Korean and Korean American history, and pop culture. It went on to become a 2024 Pulitzer Prize finalist and the winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for its energy, ambition and sly humor. Now Park's third book is out, a collection called 'An Oral History of Atlantis' whose 16 stories are similarly unbound by run-of-the-mill realism. Like 'Same Bed Different Dreams,' it is a pastiche of forms and nods to genre fiction, from commentaries on campy sci-fi movies to middle-aged dissections of long-gone relationships to indignant epistolary rebukes. The tales often adopt a knowing, nerd-chic irony. Characters with names like Bethany Blanket and Vernon Bodily are rendered in prose full of writerly self-deprecation and mock hipsterdom: In Portland my handler, Jonas, took me to lunch at a locavore haunt that featured seafood haggis and artisanal jelly beans. Park's flash fictions can be capsules of wit. In one, a man lists the antic behaviors of his medicated wife in a series of repeated assertions: 'The wife on Ambien hacks into my Facebook account and leaves slurs on the pages of my enemies.' The introductory story, 'A Note to My Translator,' is a critique by a disgruntled novelist of an arbitrary translation of one of his books. His lofty, antiquated diction and ego reminded me instantly of Charles Kinbote, the deranged scholar-narrator of Vladimir Nabokov's 'Pale Fire': Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

KPOP Demon Hunters' Arden Cho wows in bejewelled gown at Malaysian bridal event (VIDEO)
KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 — Korean American actress Arden Cho is currently in Malaysia. Cho who was most recently the lead voice actress of the Netflix's smash hit KPop Demon Hunters, was spotted at Malaysia Bridal Fashion Week with her unnamed fiancé, dressed in a lavish white gown as a guest of The Gown Atelier. Coincidentally Cho recently got engaged this year so the timing of the event couldn't be better. The actress has been busy on social media posting various collabs with K-pop artists such as Le Sserafim and ASTRO's Cha Eunwoo. The actress has also starred in other big Netflix shows such as Partner Track and the live version of Avatar the Last Airbender. #SHOWBIZ: Hybe, Paramount set 2027 release for K-pop film shot in South Korea
SEOUL: Hybe America and Paramount Pictures have reportedly announced they will co-produce a K-pop-themed feature film, slated for theatrical release in early 2027. According to The Korea Herald, the film will follow a Korean American teenager who auditions for a reality TV competition, hoping to join a K-pop girl group, against her family's wishes. Filming is scheduled to commence in mid-September and will take place entirely in South Korea. This reportedly marks it as the first major Hollywood studio project to be shot exclusively in the country. Yoo Ji-young and Eric Nam have reportedly been cast in the lead roles, with Korean American director Benson Lee at the helm, working from a script by Eileen Shim. Lee expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, "This film is my love letter to K-pop — a world filled with energy, passion, magic and an incredible community of support." James Shin of Hybe America, Arthur Spector and Joshua Davis of Epic Magazine, and Hybe board member Scooter Braun will reportedly serve as producers. Bryan Oh, Paramount Pictures' senior vice president, is said to be overseeing the project. It's worth noting that Hybe is the South Korean entertainment company behind popular groups such as BTS, Seventeen, NewJeans, and Enhypen.
