Leon Marchand closes Indy Cup with 200m medley victory

He will be back for the world championships in July. PHOTO: AFP LOS ANGELES – Four-gold Olympic champion Leon Marchand, continuing his build up to the swimming world championships in Singapore, capped the Indy Summer Cup meeting with a victory in the 200m individual medley on June 28. The French 23-year-old, who took the Paris Olympics by storm with gold in the 200m breaststroke, 200m butterfly and 200 and 400 individual medleys, clocked 1min 57.23 with Hungary's Hubert Kos second in 2:00.16. Kos, who like Marchand trains in Texas under coach Bob Bowman, polished off a strong week with a victory in the 200m backstroke in 1:56.74, with Marchand second in 1:57.14. Kos, the reigning Olympic and world champion in the 200m back, added the title to the 100m back and 200m butterfly titles he claimed on June 27. Marchand added a second victory of the week after winning the 100m breaststroke on June 27 in 59.95sec – dipping under one minute in the event for the second time in his career. American Regan Smith, also headed to Singapore later in July, completed an impressive week with victories in the 200m backstroke and the 200m medley to go with victories in the 200m fly and 100m back. US swimmers triumphed in the 100m freestyles. Chris Guiliano clocked 47.72 to head a men's final field that saw Kos finish fourth in 49.42 and Marchand seventh in 49.70. Simone Manuel won the women's 100m free in 53.28, with Smith second in 54.15. Meanwhile, after a disappointing Olympic campaign that yielded just one medal, Japan's swimming team hope to improve their results at the 2028 Los Angeles Games by getting their athletes used to living in close quarters and facing challenges away from the pool. In preparation for the world championships, national team members lived together in a 'virtual athletes' village' while competing at the Tokyo metropolitan championships in early June. The camp, aimed at enabling athletes to thrive in unfamiliar environments, such as those at Olympic Games, proved to be a valuable experience, according to senior Japan Aquatics official Toshiaki Kurasawa. 'We got more out of it than we expected,' Kurasawa said. The exercise was held at Sea Forest Waterway, the 2020 Olympic canoeing and rowing venue on Tokyo Bay, located far from the nearest convenience stores and other amenities. The athletes traveled some 20 minutes by bus to the competition venue, the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, just as they would at an Olympics. Japan's sole Paris Games medalist, men's 400m IM silver winner Tomoyuki Matsushita, bunked in a room with seven teammates while competing at the metropolitan championships. Despite poor sleep due to a roommate's snoring, he was able to set a good time in the pool. 'We were able to achieve our goal of swimming decent times under less-than-ideal conditions,' Matsushita said. AFP, KYODO NEWS Join ST's WhatsApp Channel and get the latest news and must-reads.

32-HOUR flight to NOWHERE after flight to Crete suffers so many aborted landing attempts and puking passengers the captain gives up and returns home

Passengers endured a mind-numbing 32-hour flight to nowhere after a journey to Greece suffered so many delays the pilot gave up and flew home. The Condor flight DE1234 embarked on what was meant to be a routine flight from Zurich, Switzerland, to Heraklion, Crete, on May 24 before the chaos unfolded. Despite departing around 30 minutes late, the flight appeared to be running smoothly, and after two hours into the 1,198-mile flight, the plane began its initial descent to the Greek island. But the aircraft's landing was disrupted by powerful winds which forced it to circle around for a period of time before the pilot decided to divert the flight to Athens and refuel. The flight touched down in the Greek capital at 11:24am local time - three hours after it had originally left Zurich. Some two-and-a-half hours later, the crew made their second attempt at transporting the 137 passengers to Heraklion, only to face another delay. They reportedly made it to their destination but quickly realised that the weather conditions were still severe. After circling round again, the pilot decided to divert to nearby Kos to refuel, landing at 3:28pm after a one-and-a-half hour flight. The aircraft was once more running dangerously low on fuel so it was decided the plane would divert yet again to Thessaloniki, where the crew and passengers spent the night. They touched down at 6:04pm after a one-hour flight - a staggering 11 hours after they had departed from Zurich. The following morning at 9am, the crew decided to make one final attempt to get to Crete, but found themselves in a holding pattern yet again, due to the winds. Again, they were forced to divert to Athens, where the pilot decided to give up on the journey and fly back to Zurich, arriving a full 32-hours after the initial departure. Condor representatives said that 'due to extreme weather conditions and strong winds, takeoffs and landings at Heraklion Airport were only possible to a limited extent,' as per the NY Post. During the tiresome journey, the crew reportedly landed a total of five times, and passengers were allegedly only given a glass of water and nothing else throughout the flight. Many passengers were said to have been vomiting during the approaches to Heraklion because of the severe winds. When they landed in Thessaloniki, the flyers were also reportedly forced to fork out for their own hotel rooms, although they are entitled to reimbursement under European aviation guidelines.

EU enlargement commissioner says launching clusters with Ukraine and Moldova is "absolutely necessary"

The opening of the first cluster in the EU accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova is absolutely necessary; everything is ready for this, and the decision is in the hands of the EU Council. Source: Marta Kos, European Commissioner for Enlargement, at a meeting of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee on 3 June, as reported by European Pravda Details: Kos stressed that Ukraine and Moldova are ready to open the first cluster, and the EU Council must find ways to do so. "We absolutely need to take the next step with Ukraine and Moldova. Now, both countries have done their homework. Everything is ready and in the hands of the Council to open the first cluster," she noted. Kos reiterated that "EU accession for Ukraine is a key security guarantee. We need to make it a reality". "We need to process the move forward, to keep up momentum for reform in Ukraine, to help our member states tackle their concerns and ultimately to respond to our biggest security challenges since the end of the Second World War," she said. Marta Kos also mentioned the progress in reforms that Ukraine was demonstrating. "Thirty-six reform indicators have been met with continued efforts in traditional reform, anti-corruption, energy market liberalisation, corporate governance and the business climate. These reforms achieved under the most difficult conditions are not abstract. They directly support Ukraine's EU accession and bring it closer to the Union in every sense, politically, legally and economically," Kos stated. Background: Brussels is developing a scenario for parallel negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU bypassing Hungary – the first steps in its implementation have already been taken, although they prefer not to announce this officially. On 27 May, János Bóka, Hungarian Minister for EU Affairs, stated that Hungary would continue to block Ukraine's accession to the EU due to espionage scandals. British woman is killed and her husband left fighting for life after SUV crashes into bakery in Kos

A British woman has been killed and her husband left fighting for his life after an SUV crashed into a bakery on a Greek island. The driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle before slamming into the building in Tigaki, Kos, shattering the windows and dragging the couple along. The pair were sitting at tables outside the bakery when the large 4x4 came barreling towards them, local media reports. They had been holidaying on the tourist hotspot island before the nightmare unfolded yesterday afternoon. The driver had just left work and was on his way to the bakery when disaster struck, according to local news outlet Mega. Both the couple and the driver were left injured after he struck the shop's window. All three were rushed to hospital, where the woman succumbed to her injuries and died. Her husband remains in critical condition, while the driver suffered only minor injuries. A bakery worker told local news that the driver was turning towards the building when he appeared to lose control of the vehicle. She said: 'The driver was in a state of shock, clutching his head, shouting "what happened, what did I do?"' The Traffic Police in Kos have since launched an investigation into the crash. It comes after a British tourist was killed in India when a car driving 'in a rash and negligent manner' lost control and plowed into him and his wife. Harish Solanki, 86, was crushed against a compound wall at the picturesque town of Candolim last month, local media reported. His 81-year-old wife, Chandrakanta, was in critical condition after sustaining grievous injuries and being taken to a nearby hospital. The Traffic Police in Kos have since launched an investigation into the crash. Driver Vicky Jain, 48, was arrested after hitting the couple with his rental car, said to have taken extensive damage from the incident. Police said he was on the main road through Candolim to nearby Calangute when he veered onto the wrong side of the carriageway and hit the couple. Authorities understand that the couple had just left their hotel and were walking on the side of the road when they were struck. Solanki died in hospital that evening, while his wife was undergoing treatment at a medical centre and remained in critical condition. The incident reportedly occurred near the Fisherman's Cover Restaurant on Friday April 25. Both were rushed to the Candolim Primary Health Centre before being taken to the Goa Medical College (GMC) hospital in Bambolim due to the severity of their injuries. Police have contacted the family of the British nationals and are understood to have launched an investigation. The driver was identified as 48-year-old Vicky Omprakash Jain from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, Daijiworld reports. He was arrested by Calangute police following a complaint. MailOnline contacted the Foreign Office for comment. Candolim is a small town in the state of Goa, home to sandy beaches and colonial architecture built by the Portuguese. Calangute, a coastal village to the south, is a popular tourist destination and the home of Bruno Coutinho, former captain of the Indian national football team.
