Capcom Drops First 'Resident Evil Requiem' Gameplay, Explains Why Leon Isn't The Focus
Capcom has revealed the first gameplay tease for its highly anticipated survival horror sequel, Resident Evil Requiem , showing off both first and third-person gameplay and highlighting its new protagonist, FBI Agent Grace Ashcroft. Shown via the Capcom Spotlight event, brief snippets of the upcoming title were shown, including clips of Ashcroft slowly moving through dimly lit corridors with a lighter in hand, stalked by a giant humanoid creature that's pure nightmare fuel. On first look, the game does give off similar vibes to 2017's Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, with its tight, claustrophobic interiors, although this might just be a specific section of the game, and environments might open up as the game progresses, similar to 2021's Resident Evil Village . In the trailer, game director Koshi Nakanishi explains the focus on a new protagonist this time around, with the game centred on a new type of character for the series, the introverted and jumpy FBI intelligence analyst Ashcroft. 'We wanted someone that experiences horror from the same perspective as the player,' Nakanishi explained, adding that even though the goal was to allow players to witness Ashcroft overcome her fears over the course of the story, she's not entirely helpless either, being trained with firearms and possessing 'calm deductive reasoning'. Gameplay for both the titles' first and third-person perspectives were also shown, with the developers explaining how the former makes for 'tense, realistic gameplay', while the latter is 'great for people who enjoy action-heavy gameplay', offering more freedom for players to experience the title in their own way. Alas, the trailer didn't feature the big Leon Kennedy reveal fans were expecting, with the developers instead noting why the franchise veteran was actually a 'bad match for horror'. 'We always thought about making Leon the protagonist,' Nakanishi explained, 'but making a horror game based around him is difficult. He wouldn't jump at a bucket falling. No one wants to see Leon scared by every little thing.' Despite the statement, Leon's appearance in the game was not ruled out entirely, adding to fan speculation that he might be the game's unannounced second protagonist, and would show up in the later portions of the game, similar to Resident Evil Village 's closing section with Chris Redfield. This follows details spotted in the game's reveal trailer hinting at Leon's presence, including the character's truck parked outside the ruins of the Raccoon City Police Department, the character's voice actor Nick Apostolides' online resume, and comments by Resident Evil leaker Dusk Golem. In any case, it's still early to say for sure, with more details surrounding Resident Evil Requiem's plot and characters bound to come as the game approaches its 27 February 2026 release for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Resident Evil 4 remake is fastest selling entry with 10 million sales
Capcom's Resident Evil 4 remake has become the fastest selling entry in the entire franchise, as attention turns towards the whereabouts of the next entry. Monster Hunter: World might be Capcom's highest-selling game ever (likely to be overtaken by the more recent Monster Hunter Wilds) but the Resident Evil franchise is still its best-selling IP overall. This has been reinforced in updated sales numbers from Capcom and it's particularly good news for 2023's Resident Evil 4. The remake has officially sold over 10 million units worldwide since it launched, which is a one million increase from January this year. According to Capcom, this is the fastest any title in the series has hit this milestone, so it's very possible it could become the best-selling entry ever down the line. Currently, the highest-selling entries are Resident Evil 2 remake and Resident Evil 7, which have now both sold more than 15 million units each. Resident Evil Village, meanwhile, has surpassed 11 million sales, while Resident Evil 3 remake has sold over 10 million, after five years. As of December 31, 2024, the Resident Evil series has sold more than 167 million units in total, with Monster Hunter, which only became popular in the West relatively recently, on 108 million. Capcom has already confirmed more remakes are on the way, with rumours suggesting the next one will be Resident Evil Zero. While the company has only announced ports of Street Fighter 6 and Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess for the Switch 2 so far, it feels inevitable that Resident Evil 4 remake will eventually make its way to the system – which will likely spike sales even further. More Trending The previous remakes, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, along with Resident Evil 7 and Village, were all released on the original Switch in cloud versions, while many of the original games, including the OG Resident Evil 4, are available on the Nintendo eShop. Capcom officially announced Resident Evil 9 last year, to be led by Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi, but nothing has been said or shown of the game so far. There are rumours it will be open world, to some degree, using technology from Dragon's Dogma 2, and will mark a 'big reinvention' for the series akin to Resident Evil 7 – which shifted the horror to a first person perspective for the first time. While Capcom has given no indication of when it could be revealed, many fans suspect the first trailer will be shown at some point this year – with the most likely venue being Summer Game Fest on June 6. Resident Evil 9 Leaker Asks Fans to Brace for Major Changes
It has been nearly four years since Resident Evil Village launched for PS5 and PS4. While Capcom has released games within the franchise, including Resident Evil Re:Verse and the Resident Evil 4 remake, the next mainline entry has yet to be revealed. However, it seems we may finally get the first look at sometime this year according to a known leaker. According to Dusk Golem, most known for their horror video game leaks, Resident Evil 9 will 'almost definitely' be revealed sometime this year. They also claim that the reason why it has yet to be revealed is due to the scope of the game. It is, supposedly, a 'big reinvention of the series,' similar to how entries like Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 7 revolutionized the franchise. 'The thing I think people will realize when RE9 is revealed is the reason this game is taking so long is because it's like a big reinvention of the series, to the same level as RE4 & RE7,' claims the leaker. 'It's not going to play just like RE7/RE8 or the Remakes, it's trying new things & very ambitious. It will almost definitely be revealed this year, so just hold tight.' Details on Resident Evil 9 are very sparse, and are mostly just rumors. One rumor suggests the next mainline entry in the beloved horror franchise will be open-world. One concrete detail we do know is Resident Evil 7's Koshi Nakanishi is heading development for Resident Evil 9, which was revealed during Capcom Next last year. 'We're making a new Resident Evil,' Nakanishi said during the Capcom Next showcase. 'It was really difficult to figure out what to do after (Resident Evil 7). But I found it, and to be honest, it feels substantial. I can't share any details just yet, but I hope you're excited for the day I can.'
