Ghana retained its position as one of West Africa's leading travel destinations in 2024, attracting 1,288,804 international arrivals, a 12% increase compared to the previous year, according to the latest Tourism Report released by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA). Ghana received 1,288,804 international arrivals in 2024, marking a 12% increase from the previous year. Major travel reasons included business (2.43%), visiting family and friends (22.29%), and holidays/vacations (22.15%). Visitors highly rated Ghana for hospitality, cultural heritage, cuisine, and safety, with 88% recognizing it as an ideal destination. Business travel leads motivations The report indicates that 2.43% of visitors came primarily for business, making it the most common reason for travel to Ghana in 2024. Travel for study or teaching accounted for 7.06%, while visits to family and friends comprised 22.29%. Holidays or vacations followed closely with 22.15%, showing a relatively balanced distribution among the top travel motivations. Other purposes cited by visitors included attendance at conferences, cultural festivals, sports events, and transit travel. Kotoka International Airport tops entry points Kotoka International Airport remained the primary entry gateway, handling over 1.13 million of the total arrivals. Major land borders such as Aflao, Elubo, and Paga also served as key entry points for regional travellers. U.S., Nigeria, and U.K. top source markets The United States led in visitor numbers, contributing 137,862 arrivals, followed by Nigeria with 111,581, and the United Kingdom with 52,845. These three countries alone accounted for a significant proportion of inbound travel, reflecting Ghana's strong business ties and cultural connections with its diaspora. Strong tourism appeal and satisfaction A remarkable 88% of international respondents rated Ghana as an 'ideal tourism destination.' Visitors highlighted Ghanaian hospitality (94%), cultural heritage (39%), local cuisine (28%), and safety (39%) as key elements influencing their positive experiences.

In the fourth leg of his visit, Modi will travel to Brazil to attend the 17th BRICS summit followed by a state visit. In the final leg of his visit, Modi will travel to Namibia. Modi, who is visiting Ghana at the invitation of President John Dramani Mahama, was given a guard of honour upon his arrival at the Kotoka International Airport here. Accra (Ghana): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday arrived in Ghana on a two-day visit during which he will hold talks with the West African country's top leadership and review the strong bilateral partnership. Modi, who is visiting Ghana at the invitation of President John Dramani Mahama, was given a guard of honour upon his arrival at the Kotoka International Airport here. This is the Prime Minister's first-ever bilateral visit to Ghana. It is also the first Prime Ministerial visit from India to Ghana in three decades. Ghana is a valued partner in the Global South and plays an important role in the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States, the PM said in his departure statement. Modi added that he looked forward to talks aimed at further deepening the two countries' historical ties and opening up new windows of cooperation, including in the areas of investment, energy, health, security, capacity building and development partnership. "As fellow democracies, it will be an honour to speak at the Parliament of Ghana," he added. During the visit, Modi will hold talks with the president of Ghana to review the strong bilateral partnership and discuss further avenues to enhance it through economic, energy, and defence collaboration, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). This visit will reaffirm the shared commitment of the two countries to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India's engagement with the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) and the African Union, it added. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (local time) conferred the national honour of Ghana, Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, by its President, John Dramani Mahama, in recognition of his "distinguished" statesmanship and influential global leadership, Ministry of External Affairs said in an official statement. PM Modi also thanked the people and government of Ghana for this special gesture. Noting that the shared democratic values and traditions of the two countries would continue to nurture the partnership, the Prime Minister stated that the award further deepens the friendship between the two countries and places new responsibility on him to embrace and advance bilateral ties. Prime Minister affirmed he was confident that his historic State Visit to Ghana would impart a new momentum to India-Ghana ties, the MEA statement added. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India will establish a Skill Development Centre to train youth and support Ghana's 'Feed Ghana' programme as part of a broader plan to strengthen ties between the two countries. During a joint press briefing with Ghanaian President John Mahama, PM Modi said India would expand cooperation with Ghana in key sectors including agriculture, education, defence, healthcare and digital payments. "Today, we have decided to double the ITEC and ICCR scholarships for Ghana. Work will be done to establish a Skill Development Centre for vocational education of youth," PM Modi said. "In the agricultural sector, we would be happy to cooperate with President Mahama's 'Feed Ghana' programme. Through Jan Aushadhi Kendra, India proposes to provide 'affordable healthcare, reliable care' to the citizens of Ghana. We discussed cooperation in vaccine production," he added. The Prime Minister also said that India plans to double trade with Ghana within the next five years and offer its digital payments system, Bharat UPI, to boost financial connectivity.
