NHRC tells Latur district administration to initiate welfare measures for farmer pulling plough

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent a notice to Latur district administration to initiate welfare measures for debt-hit farmer Ambadas Pawar (75) from Hadoalti village in Ahmedpur taluka. Resident deputy collector for Latur Keshav Netake on Wednesday said NHRC has sought action taken report to be submitted within 15 days. "The state agriculture department has already reached out to Pawar, offering all possible help. He is receiving financial and other assistance from different leaders and organisations. One NGO has also taken responsibility of the education of his grandchildren," he said. According to Latur district administration, Pawar now has three pairs of oxen which he received as donation. "Farmers' group 'Krantikari Shetkari Sanghatana', Shiv Sena MLA from Buldhana Sanjay Gaikwad, and actor Sonu Sood have each offered a pair of oxen to Pawar," officials said. Pawar has so far received nearly Rs 3.7 lakh in financial aid from various political parties, social groups, and individuals. State cooperation minister Babasaheb Patil, who represents Ahmedpur assembly constituency, has already shouldered the responsibility of Rs 42,000 loan borrowed by Pawar, an official said. Speaking with media persons recently, Pawar expressed concern over the education of his two grandchildren. One social organisation has announced that it would bear the responsibility of educating Pawar's grandchildren.

In a commending move, Maharashtra minister Babasaheb Patil on Saturday cleared a farmer's loan of Rs 42,500 after a video of the debt-hit farmer pulling a plough all by himself to till his field in Latur district went viral on social media platforms. In the now viral video, the farmer, identified as 75-year-old Ambadas Pawar, a resident of Hadolti village in Ahmedpur tehsil, was seen pulling a plough all by himself on a dry patch of land with his wife by his side in the absence of oxen due to financial constraints. The video had evoked tremendous empathy from netizens for their plight. With no means to hire oxen or tractors that cost nearly Rs 2,500 per day, Pawar had said that he and his wife had turned into human ploughs. After coming across the heartbreaking visual, the state's cooperation minister, Babasaheb Patil, reached out to the poor farmer and promised to repay his pending crop loan, according to the government press release. Pawar had an outstanding loan of Rs 42,500 from the Hadolti Multi-purpose Cooperative Society. Patil visited the village on Saturday to hand over the amount to the society's office-bearers and instructed them to issue a clearance certificate to Pawar. The minister said the government is determined to address farmers' problems and is implementing various welfare schemes to improve their conditions. On Friday, the Latur district unit of Krantikari Shetkari Sanghatana presented Pawar, who owns 2.5 acres of land, with a pair of bullocks. The bovine animals were brought to his house in Hadolti in a procession amid music and dance.
