Ukraine, Russia launch drone strikes after latest round of peace talks
July 24 (Reuters) - Ukraine and Russia launched drone strikes against each other early on Thursday, officials from both sides said, within hours of the conclusion of the latest round of direct talks aimed at finding a solution after nearly three and half years of war. Ukrainian drones hit southern Russian Black Sea areas, killing one person, injuring another and hitting an oil storage depot. Russian forces staged the latest in a series of mass attacks on Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odesa, triggering several fires in residential and other buildings. Emergency officials in Russia's Krasnodar region on the Black Sea said on the Telegram messaging app that debris from a falling drone struck and killed a woman in Adler district near the resort city of Sochi. A second woman was being treated in hospital for serious injuries. The administrative head of the Sirius federal district, south of Sochi, said a drone hit an oil base, but gave no further details. Russia's Rosaviatsia aviation authority said operations were suspended at Sochi airport for about four hours. In Odesa, Regional Governor Oleh Kiper said two floors of a multi-storey apartment building had been set ablaze. Other fires broke out on the roof of a two-storey residence, in kiosks and at a petrol station. The city's historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was also hit, he said. Kiper said details on casualties were being compiled. Reuters could not independently confirm accounts from either side. Negotiators from the two sides had earlier discussed further prisoner swaps at a brief session of peace talks in the Turkish city of Istanbul, but the sides remained far apart on ceasefire terms and a possible meeting of their leaders. Ukraine's military has frequently launched drone attacks on Russian targets often far from the war's front line, particularly on sites linked with energy. Russian forces have in recent weeks intensified drone attacks on Ukrainian towns and cities.

Just How Good Can Islanders Prospect Daniil Prokhorov Be? Development Path Routes
New York Islanders fans have a lot to be excited about with prospect Daniil Prokhorov. The 18-year-old winger from Krasnodar, Russia, was the club's 2025 second-round pick (No. 42), and he quickly turned heads at development camp with his impressive skating, awareness, intensity, and personality. Advertisement His game centers around his 6-foot-6, 218-pound frame, as he utilizes his size and strength to drive to the net and win puck battles, while also possessing a long stride and impressive agility for his size. Fans fell in love with Prokhorov's game at the camp, but the Islanders' front office has been impressed by the young forward for a while, and so have their cross-town rivals, the New York Rangers. Speaking with RB Sports (Hockey), Prokhorov gave some insight on the draft process, notably mentioning how he knew the Islanders would be his landing spot: 'I had the best talk with Islanders. Like I knew them for 20 years. [The New York Rangers] wanted to choose me at the 43rd [pick]. But I said that they won't succeed, because [the New York Islanders] will choose me at the 42nd.' Advertisement Well, Prokhorov was right, as the Islanders took him with the 42nd pick, forcing the Rangers to select winger Malcom Spence. Prokhorov was arguably the best player on the ice at the Islanders' development camp, but he still has a long way to go before reaching the NHL, notably by rounding out his two-way game while becoming a more consistent and reliable winger. The question is, how good can this kid be? Can he turn into a Valeri Nichushkin type? The Sarnia Sting selected Prokhorov with the 42nd overall pick in the CHL Import Draft. He has played for the KHL's junior league team, St. Petersburg Dynamo, over the last two seasons, recording 20 goals with seven assists for 27 points in 43 games. Advertisement Hell have to decide whether to stay in the KHL or come over to North America. We saw an Islanders prospect, Jesse Nurmi, last season decide to play in juniors after being selected by the London Knights 58th overall in the 2024 CHL Import Draft. He went on to win the Memorial Cup, developing on this side of the pond to prepare for his first season with the organization. Given the language barrier, the different ice surface, and the different style, it makes perfect sense for Prokhorov to follow in Nurmi's footsteps. However, the one caveat to leaving home is the age of players he will play against. While the MHL age max is 20, just like it is for the OHL, Prokhorov would likely be making the jump to the KHL this season. Advertisement Given his size, it may make sense for him to develop against men, since banging bodies and playing that hard-nosed style are his strongest assets. The Hockey News reached out to Prokhorov's representatives but have yet to garner a response. Stay updated with the most interesting Islanders stories, analysis, breaking news, and more! Krasnodar submit offer for Nantes' Douglas Augusto
FC Nantes' squad could be picked apart this summer. Moses Simon is on the verge of completing a move to recently promoted Paris FC, Matthis Abline is the subject of interest from Olympique de Marseille and multiple Premier League sides, whilst Nathan Zézé is also linked with a move away from the Beaujoire. Les Canaris' midfield could also be picked apart. As per a report from Ouest-France, Nantes have received an offer from Russian club Krasnodar for Douglas Augusto (28). The bid is worth €4m. Whilst it is thought that this figure will not be sufficient to conclude a deal, it has nonetheless allowed for talks between the two sides to begin. Advertisement Augusto is tempted by the prospect of joining Krasnodar. The Brazilian, who joined Nantes two years ago, has a contract that runs through until 2027. Last season, he featured prominently, playing 28 out of Nantes' 34 games in the league. GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Ukrainian national charged over assassination plot in Russia
A Ukrainian national accused of plotting the assassination of a Russian military veteran has been detained, the Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on Wednesday. The man, a resident of Novgorod Region in northwestern Russia, has been charged with attempted terrorist activity and illegal possession of explosives, according to an FSB statement. Investigators are reportedly gathering further evidence to pursue additional charges of sabotage and collaboration with a hostile power. The suspect, who is in his late 20s, told the authorities that he first contacted Ukrainian intelligence officials in October 2023, according to footage released by the agency. He is accused of carrying out arson attacks on two privately owned vehicles belonging to individuals he believed were Russian military personnel in September and December 2024. In January, he was allegedly instructed to surveil and assassinate a specific individual using an improvised explosive device. The intended target was described by the FSB as a military veteran and public figure. The authorities claim that the suspect retrieved bomb components from a hidden cache shortly before being taken into custody. The video published by the FSB appears to show explosives, a fuse, and other elements associated with the assembly of improvised bombs. The arrest follows another reported counterterrorism operation revealed this week. On Tuesday, the FSB said it had foiled a separate Ukrainian-planned attack in southern Krasnodar Region, in which the suspect allegedly aimed to detonate a 2.5kg homemade explosive at an energy company. Earlier this year, a Russian court sentenced a man who attempted to poison military cadets by delivering a cake laced with toxins to a graduation celebration. The convict was born in Ukraine and moved to Russia in 2018, eventually becoming a naturalized citizen.

Ukrainian terrorist attack on energy company thwarted
Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) operatives have thwarted a Ukrainian terrorist attack in Krasnodar Region in southern Russia, the agency has said. A man who was recruited by Kiev was detained for planning to set off an explosion at an administrative building of an energy company in the region, the FSB said in a statement on Tuesday. According to the agency, the suspect, in his early 20s, was approached by Ukrainian intelligence services via WhatsApp this February. His initial tasks included taking photographs of military facilities and collecting information on the movement of Russian Black Sea Fleet vessels, it said. The man was later told to collect an improvised explosive device weighing 2.5kg from a stash in order 'to commit a terrorist act in a public space,' the statement read. He was apprehended by FSB officers while on his way to pick up the bomb, it added. A criminal case has been launched against the suspect for preparing an act of terrorism and illegal possession of explosives, the agency said. The man has admitted his guilt and is cooperating with the investigators, the FSB noted. It also published a short video of the suspect's interrogation, in which he said he received money from the Ukrainian spies for fulfilling their tasks. The administrative building that he planned to attack was located in Novorossiysk, he added. Novorossiysk is a major port city on the Black Sea, through which a significant part of Russia's oil trade is conducted. It also hosts a Black Sea Fleet base. The FSB warned in its statement that 'the Ukrainian special services are increasingly using the Telegram and WhatsApp messaging apps to involve citizens in sabotage and reconnaissance activities.'
