Busy road in Riverview closed for several weeks for FDOT's 301 construction project

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Starting Friday night, a busy road in the Riverview area will close down for the next three weeks. Things along Boyette Road will look different as the Florida Department of Transportation continues its massive repaving project. Lanes will start shutting down on Boyette Road at the intersection of US 301. 'This is a 25-million-dollar project, a big part of it is converting the intersection from asphalt to concrete, there's a lot of truck traffic out there, and concrete is more durable, and it lasts longer. Another part of the project is resurfacing a big section of US 301,' said Kris Carson, a spokesperson for FDOT. The section is on 301 from Whitt Road to Rivercrest Drive. As a part of the project, Boyette Road to the east of 301 will be closed. Detours will be in place for drivers along Bloomingdale Avenue, Bell Shoals Road, McMullen Road, and Rhodine Road. As a part of the intersection closure, drivers can expect heavy traffic. 'Businesses will remain open, access to businesses will remain open, but there can be some congestion expected. Of course, if you're getting off I-75 at Gibsonton, you can still exit the interstate, but you cannot cross over to Boyette, we want to make sure people understand that,' Carson said. Once this phase is complete, the intersection will be re-stripped, and an additional left turn lane from Boyette onto Southbound US 301 will be put in, FDOT said. Carson said their men and women are working hard to get all of this done, and as a part of Work Zone Awareness Week, they want to make sure those behind the wheel pay attention. 'It's really simple, put down your phone, slow down, we all work in offices, a lot of our workers are outside, they work along the road, and they're improving the roads for all of us and we just ask people to pay attention,' she said. Boyette Road is expected to be closed for 21 days, and FDOT wants to remind people to have patience and to drive carefully. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Boyette Road to close for weeks at U.S. 301 in Hillsborough County. Here's what to know

The Brief The east side of Boyette Road will be closed for three weeks at U.S. 301 to install a new concrete roadway. It's part of a $25 million project in one of Hillsborough County's fastest-growing areas. Detours will be in place for three weeks, starting on Friday night, according to the Florida Department of Transportation. RIVERVIEW, Fla. - A major road project in one of Hillsborough County's fastest-growing areas will shut down part of Boyette Road for three weeks starting Friday night. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is closing the east side of Boyette Road at U.S. 301 to install a new concrete roadway — a key part of a $25 million improvement project designed to keep pace with growth in Riverview, Gibsonton, and the surrounding communities. What they're saying "What we're doing is replacing the asphalt surface out there with concrete," said FDOT District 7 spokesperson Kris Carson. "The concrete lasts longer. There's a lot of truck traffic out there and (concrete) is more durable. That's the whole point of this project." The closure will begin Friday, April 25 at 10 p.m. and remain in place for 21 days. Drivers will not be able to cross U.S. 301 using Boyette Road and will be detoured to Bloomingdale Avenue, Bell Shoals Road, and Rhodine Road. Carson said FDOT has been actively engaging with businesses and residents ahead of the closure. "(On Tuesday) we started going door to door to all the businesses," she said. "We're doing what we call geofencing where people as they drive through the area will get a pop-up message on their phones later when it's a safe way to look at their phones, letting people know businesses are open. All access to businesses will remain open." What's next This segment of the project is expected to wrap up by mid-May, weather permitting. Additional resurfacing along U.S. 301 will continue into next year. Drivers are urged to use caution and obey all signs in the construction zone.
