NEW DELHI: The New Delhi Municipal Council has approved a series of infrastructure proposals aimed at improving civic amenities and women's safety, while also unanimously passing a resolution condemning the 1975 Emergency as a 'dark phase' in India's democratic history. In a meeting chaired by PWD Minister Parvesh Verma, the Council cleared the purchase of five new CNG-powered road-sweeping machines to replace its ageing diesel fleet introduced in 2017-18. NDMC Vice Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal said the Rs 6.69 crore proposal, funded with Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) support, aligns with the National Green Tribunal's restrictions on diesel vehicles. The Council also approved the development of 37 pink toilets, one in each NDMC market,with facilities such as sanitary napkin vending machines, baby care spaces, drinking water and women staff for security and sanitation. Chahal said the move aims to create 'a safer and more dignified urban environment for women.' Civic upgrades in Jhuggi clusters and plans to enhance basic services around key temples—including Hanuman Mandir, Birla Mandir also discussed.

New Delhi: Over 2,000 yoga enthusiasts gathered at Kartavya Path, their voices rising in unison with the chant of 'Om'. International Yoga Day 2025 unfolded as a vibrant display of unity and mindfulness, organised by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). The morning began with a live telecast of the Prime Minister's address from Visakhapatnam, which set the tone for the 11th edition of the celebration. In the presence of union health minister, JP Nadda and NDMC vice Chairman, Kuljeet Singh Chahal, the session was led by Acharya Pragya Sagar in collaboration with the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga. Addressing the crowd, Nadda said, "People around the world are doing yoga to stay healthy, and more and more people have started practising yoga in the past ten years." NDMC made seamless arrangements across eight locations, including mobile toilets, healthcare services, and drinking water. Additionally, yoga protocol events were organised at NDMC Old Age Home and Working Women's Hostel, among other venues. We don't realise it when we're young, but as we grow older, we understand that it is a gift from our Indian tradition." Similar scenes could be seen at Lodhi Garden, where children aged 6 to 9 joined their parents. "As a woman, yoga has made my life more manageable. Even daily chores feel easier now," said Suman Singh, 58, who had earlier attended another yoga camp at Pandara Road. Apart from NDMC, the Delhi Development Authority and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) also held yoga sessions across the city. At Baansera, lieutenant governor Vinai Kumar Saxena performed various yoga poses to showcase its wide-ranging benefits. Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh joined an MCD-led session and urged parents to instil yoga habits in children, saying, "Yoga is not just an exercise but a lifestyle. It is a priceless heritage of Indian culture, and everybody should do it regularly." The historic Purana Qila in the capital also witnessed the celebrations of the International Day For Yoga, in a joint collaboration between the ministry of culture and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Marking a confluence of heritage and ancient tradition, the ASI marked the day by organising yoga sessions at 81 monument sites across the country. From Adalaj Ki Vav in Gujarat to the Sun Temple in Konark, these architectural wonders served as backdrops for mass yoga participation by people of all ages.

New Delhi: The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will celebrate the International Yoga Day (IYD) 2025 on Saturday at eight iconic venues, including Lodhi Garden and Shantipath, the civic agency's Vice Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal said. Chahal inspected several designated venues on Friday to review the on-ground preparations and said the main yoga day events will be held at Kartavya Path (South Lawn), Lodhi Garden, Talkatora Garden, Lawn at Shantipath, Central Park (Connaught Place), Pandara Park, New Moti Bagh (IAS Residences), and Sanjay Jheel (Lakshmi Bai Nagar). During the inspection he assessed logistical arrangements, venue readiness, signage, participation planning, and coordination with yoga partner institutions. Chahal emphasised that this initiative is part of NDMC's broader commitment to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, wherein health and wellness are fundamental to achieving national goals. 'Promoting yoga strengthens the foundation of a healthy and aware citizenry. A fit and mindful population is the real strength of a developed India,' he said. He said prominent personalities and VVIPs are expected to participate at various locations to perform yoga alongside citizens. 'It is our responsibility to ensure that every site is thoroughly inspected, and all necessary arrangements are in place, particularly from the safety and security point of view,' he said. These sessions will be conducted in collaboration with leading yoga organizations, including Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, Art of Living, Patanjali Yoga Samiti, Gayatri Parivar, among others. Each venue is expected to see participation ranging from 300 to 2,000 individuals, representing a vibrant cross-section of the community. Chahal appealed to citizens to participate wholeheartedly in the IDY celebrations and adopt yoga as a daily practice. 'A physically, mentally, and spiritually healthy society is essential to realize the dream of Viksit Bharat by 2047,' he added.

NDMC to host yoga sessions across key locations on International Day of Yoga

New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council is set to conduct yoga sessions at eight major venues across Lutyens' Delhi on June 21, on the International Day of Yoga . The locations will include Kartavya Path, Lodhi Garden, Talkatora Garden, the Lawn at Shanti Path, Central Park (Connaught Place), Pandara Park, New Moti Bagh (IAS Residences), and Sanjay Jheel (Laxmibai Nagar). The initiative will see participation from around 2,000 individuals. Meanwhile, build-up yoga camps are already underway from June 18 to 20 at Lodhi Garden and Talkatora Garden. NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal said that sessions on Yoga Day will feature the live streaming of the Prime Minister's message and the distribution of yoga t-shirts and yoga mats to the participants. The ministry of ayush will oversee the delegation of yoga trainers at these locations and coordinate with the yoga partner institutions like Patanjali Yoga Samiti and Gayitri Parivar. "A fit and healthy population is the true strength of any developed nation, and yoga is our traditional gift to the world for achieving that," Chahal remarked, as he appealed to all the citizens to join the endeavour and make it a success.
