Interstate ammunition trafficking racket busted; 4,500 rounds of ammunition seized, six arrested

Patna: The Bihar Police's Arms Cell, in coordination with multiple law enforcement agencies, busted an interstate racket of ammunition traffickers, leading to the arrest of six people and the seizure of more than 4,500 rounds of ammunition. The operation, which culminated on June 22, began following technical surveillance of the prime suspect, Kumar Abhijeet from Nalanda. Intelligence suggested that Abhijeet regularly procured ammunition from Auraiya and Kanpur Dehat in Uttar Pradesh, said a senior police official on Monday. According to the police official, "Acting on specific information, a joint team comprising Arms Cell, Special Task Force Bihar, District Intelligence Unit, and local police intercepted Abhijeet and his accomplice Shatrughan Kumar alias Devendra with an SUV near Mohania Toll Plaza on Sunday. The search of their SUV (BR 01HQ 8158) yielded 2,950 rounds of .315 bore and 750 rounds of .32 bore ammunition." Following their arrest, subsequent raids were conducted at multiple locations in Nalanda district. At a rented room in Sohsarai, the team arrested one Vishal Kumar and recovered 490 rounds of 9mm and 229 rounds of.32 bore ammunition. Another operation in Bhagan Bigha led to the arrest of four more suspects, including 70-year-old Rajendra Prasad and two women — Nibha Kumari and Nikki Kumari. The team seized additional ammunition, including rare 51 cartridges of 7.62 (SLR). DSP Sheikh Sabir, heading the Arms Cell operation, said, "This is a significant breakthrough in our ongoing efforts to curb illegal arms and ammunition trafficking in the state. The interstate nature of this racket suggests a larger network, which we are currently investigating." The accused were arrested under relevant sections of the Arms Act, and their interrogations are underway to uncover the full extent of their network and criminal history, he added.
