Madras High Court fines Chennai civic body chief Rs 1 lakh for ignoring order
The Madras High Court came down heavily on Chennai Corporation Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran for failing to act against illegal constructions in Royapuram despite its earlier directions. The court, pulling up the official, questioned if he thought being an IAS officer placed him above the court.A bench of the High Court imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Kumaragurubaran for his inaction, ordering that the amount be deducted from his salary and handed over to the Adyar Cancer Hospital. The order was passed while hearing a contempt of court petition filed by Chennai-based lawyer lawyer alleged that the commissioner had failed to comply with the court's April 2022 order directing action against illegal buildings in the fifth zone of Royapuram. The court also noted that action was to be taken in other zones as well. Special wheelchairs, two more play areas for Marina beach
1 2 3 Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation plans to procure mechanized wheelchairs for individuals with disabilities as part of the Blue Flag initiative at Marina beach. These wheelchairs are specially designed to move with ease on sand. Apart from that, two more children's play areas will soon be added under the initiative. "Although a ramp is already there, it does not extend all the way to the sea. These mechanized wheelchairs, which can move on sand, would be a welcome addition, especially for children who have never had the chance to visit the beach," said GCC commissioner J Kumaragurubaran. The civic body first plans to purchase two beach wheelchairs at an estimated 1.15 lakh each. More wheelchairs would be procured as the number of beachgoers grows in the future. In addition to this, facilities such as a meditation room, changing room, breastfeeding room, and a clothing storage area will also be built. The beach is expected to be opened for the public by the end of June. "Once the project is completed, it will be handed over to an operations and maintenance contractor. It will be a maintenance-based scheme and free for the public to visit. A dedicated worker will be assigned to maintain cleanliness," added Kumaragurubaran.

TNGDA seeks action against Madurai health official for unprofessional conduct
Madurai: The Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association (TNGDA) has demanded strict action against Dr P Kumaragurubaran, deputy director of health services (DDHS), Madurai, following allegations of workplace harassment and unprofessional conduct during official meetings. According to TNGDA, several medical officers recently lodged complaints accusing the DDHS of using abusive language during video conference meetings. A formal complaint was filed with the director of public health on May 17, and an inquiry was conducted on May 24 by the joint director of health services. Around 25 doctors reportedly appeared for the inquiry and submitted their statements. The controversy escalated on Sunday when a video allegedly showing Dr Kumaragurubaran using inappropriate language and gestures during an online meeting was anonymously shared on social media, where it quickly went viral. TNGDA condemned his behaviour, calling it unacceptable and unprofessional. TNGDA state president Dr K Senthil told TOI that doctors had also complained about extended video meetings held beyond official working hours, with claims that women staff were made to stay back late unnecessarily. "If the DDHS needed to take disciplinary action, it should have been done through proper channels," he said. As a mark of protest, TNGDA announced that its members will boycott communication with Dr Kumaragurubaran until action is taken. "Doctors have been instructed to block him on WhatsApp and respond only to official circulars. Leave applications will be routed directly through the district health office via email.
