Taiwan's former leader Ma Ying-jeou calls for ‘peaceful and democratic' unification
Former Taiwanese leader Ma Ying-jeou proposed that unification between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait should be achieved peacefully and democratically – rejecting the use or threat of force – in a rare unscripted moment during a speech on the mainland on Thursday. Advertisement It marked the first time Ma, also the former chairman of the mainland-friendly Kuomintang (KMT), has explicitly expressed his views on unification during his four visits to mainland China. His current trip started on June 14 and ends on Friday. 'My position is that the two sides of the strait should pursue peaceful and democratic unification,' said Ma, who served as Taiwan's leader from 2008 to 2016. He made the remarks at a Chinese cultural event in Dunhuang , a city in Gansu province, according to Taiwan's United Daily News on Thursday. He went on to clarify that unification should not be achieved through 'the use or threat of force' and must 'respect the will of the people of Taiwan', according to the report. The comments – delivered off-script during a carefully arranged visit – were addressed to roughly 180 attendees, which included Song Tao , head of the mainland's Taiwan Affairs Office. Advertisement In response to Ma's surprise comment, Song said in his remarks following Ma's speech that 'the future and destiny of Taiwan should be jointly decided by all Chinese people on both sides of the strait', according to a separate report by United Daily News.

Taiwan to hold recall vote for 24 largest opposition lawmakers in July
Taiwan will hold a recall election next month for 24 lawmakers of the largest opposition party Kuomintang, or KMT. The KMT currently holds 52 seats. Together with another opposition party, it forms a majority of the 113-member parliament. The ruling Democratic Progressive Party, DPP, led by President Lai Ching-te, holds 51 seats. A civic group critical of the KMT had been pushing a petition drive to hold a recall vote. The Central Election Commission announced on Friday that a recall election will be held on July 26 after the group had collected enough signatures from voters for holding one. It is rare for a large-scale recall vote to take place in Taiwan. A recall election will be held in the electoral districts that the 24 lawmakers represent. They will be dismissed if votes in favor of their recall outnumber votes against, and if those in favor account for at least a quarter of registered voters in their district. The DPP could gain a majority if many KMT lawmakers are dismissed and if it wins at least six seats in special elections to fill vacancies caused by the recall vote.

Taiwan begins sea trials of first locally built submarine amid tensions with China
TAIPEI, June 18 — Taiwan has started sea trials of its first domestically built submarine, as it upgrades its military capabilities to defend against a potential Chinese attack. The vessel is part of a submarine programme launched in 2016 that aims to deliver a fleet of eight vessels. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has threatened to use force to annex the self-ruled island, which insists it is a sovereign nation and not subordinate to Beijing. Shipbuilder CSBC Corp said Tuesday that sea trials of the submarine began in the southern port of Kaohsiung on Saturday, nearly two years after the vessel was unveiled. The submarine successfully wrapped up the trial—the first of three stages—on Tuesday with a 'floating navigation test', the company said in a statement. 'CSBC Corporation will continue, based on the test results, to adjust and improve each system, and proceed to the next phase of submerged navigation tests,' the company said. The submarine measures 80 metres (262 feet) in length, has a displacement weight of about 2,500 to 3,000 tons, and boasts combat systems and torpedoes sourced from the US defence company Lockheed Martin. The aim is to finish sea trials by September 30 and deliver the submarine by the end of November, the Navy said last month. But the submarine programme has faced obstacles. The main opposition Kuomintang party and the Taiwan People's Party, which together control the parliament, froze part of the programme's budget earlier this year. The parties said they wanted to see the results of the submarine's sea trials before releasing the funds. Taiwan, which would be massively outgunned by China in a war, is trying to boost its ability to wage 'asymmetric warfare' involving more agile equipment like submarines and drones. But there are concerns that opposition efforts to cut military spending could hurt the island's ability to strengthen its firepower. Taiwan's navy currently has two working submarines, Swordfish-class vessels bought from the Netherlands in the 1980s. The 17th Straits Forum Held in Xiamen, China: Promoting Cross-Strait Folk Exchanges and Integrated Development
