Dravidian University gets government nod for engineering college, courses to begin this year

Dravidian University in Kuppam is spruced up for the launch of its engineering college after the State government on Friday approved its proposal, and paved the way for the university to commence technical courses from the academic session 2025–26. This marks a significant initiative towards expanding higher education options at the tri-State Kuppam junction. The initiative is directly supported by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the MLA of Kuppam Assembly constituency since 1989. Dravidian University, which remains a traditional university for language studies and subjects of the humanities division, will hereafter make a strong presence in professional technical education. As part of the initiative, the engineering college will offer two undergraduate engineering courses, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), and CSE with a focus on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI & ML) in the first phase, with 60 seats available in each stream. This arrangement will benefit local students, who can now save time by avoiding travel to longer distances such as Tirupati, Chennai, or Bengaluru to pursue professional studies. The university authorities thanked the State government and acknowledged the Chief Minister's role in the sanction. 'This long-awaited dream that came true would not only galvanise the institution's academic scenario but also open great avenues for the students of this rural region. It would also enhance the reputation of the university and provide a big scope for students not only from the Kuppam region but from elsewhere in the southern States,' said Mr. Kancharla Srikath, MLC from Kuppam and government chief whip.

Woman humiliated in Kuppam; CM acts tough

Kuppam (Chittoor dist): A woman was tied to a tree and publicly humiliated by a moneylender in Narayanapuram village of Kuppam mandal in Chittoor district, following a dispute over unpaid loans. Expressing shock over the incident, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, who represents the Kuppam Assembly constituency, directed the police to take strict action against those involved and ensure that such barbaric acts are never repeated. The victim, Sirisha (29), a resident of Narayanapuram, is the wife of Thimmarayappa, who had borrowed Rs 80,000 three years ago from a fellow villager, Munikannappa. Unable to repay the debt, Thimmarayappa fled the village, abandoning his wife and children. Since then, Sirisha has been working as a daily wage labourer at her mother's village to support her children and has been making efforts to repay the loan. On Monday, she had returned to the village to collect her son's transfer certificate from the local school when she was accosted by Munikannappa and his wife. They reportedly dragged her to a roadside area, tied her to a neem tree using a rope, and assaulted her with sticks, demanding repayment of the money owed by her husband. Eyewitnesses said Sirisha's children stood by, weeping helplessly while their mother was beaten in public. Despite her repeated pleas and explanation of her financial situation, the attackers allegedly threatened to inflict more harm if the dues were not cleared. The local police rushed to the spot upon receiving information and rescued Sirisha. Following her complaint, a case was registered against Munikannappa and his family under sections 341, 323, 324, 506, and 34 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused have been taken into custody. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister took details from the Superintendent of Police and directed the officials to provide full support to the victim's family. "Strict action should be taken against those involved in the inhuman treatment of the woman," said Naidu. He also spoke to the victim over the phone. The Chief Minister also instructed the police to organise legal awareness drives in rural villages and said the public must rely on the law and refrain from vigilante justice. He also stressed the need for basic legal education in every village. The CM reiterated that his government 'would not allow such incidents' to take place and urged the police to take firm preventive measures in all regions. District in-charge Minister Mandipalli Ram Prasad Reddy also condemned the assault. 'Tying a woman to a tree and attacking her is an inhuman and unacceptable act. The government will not tolerate such brutality,' he said. He further directed officials to visit the victim's family, offer necessary support, and ensure their protection. APSRTC Vice Chairman PS Munirathnam along with other TDP leaders visited Sirisha at the hospital on Tuesday and enquired about her health. He assured her of all help and said that the TDP will take the responsibility of the children.

A.P. CM takes part in Gangamma temple jatara in Kuppam, offers silk vastrams to deity

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and his wife Nara Bhuvaneswari participated in the annual jatara at Sri Prasanna Tirupati Gangamma temple in Kuppam on Wednesday. The couple landed at the grounds of Dravidian University on the Kuppam outskirts by helicopter from Bengaluru. Mr. Naidu was accorded a warm welcome by the officials, people of Kuppam Assembly constituency and the TDP cadres. Mr. Naidu reached the Gangamma temple, where the temple priests welcomed him with a traditional Poornakumbham. He offered prayers and presented silk garments (pattu vastrams) to the presiding deity. Mr. Naidu exchanged pleasantries with the TDP cadres before leaving for Bengaluru airport from the helipad. District Collector Sumit Kumar, SP Manikanta Chandolu, and senior TDP leaders were present. The Kuppam Jatara is a major festival of Sri Prasanna Tirupati Gangamma, considered the sister of Lord Venkateswara. The history of the jatara dates back to the 17th century and the festival has been receiving the patronage of the rulers of Telugu, Kannada and Tamil dynasties, followed by the British Raj. On Tuesday evening, a palanquin carrying the idol's head was taken out in a grand procession from Pedda Bavi at Pathapeta to the main temple. The procession will continue for over 24 hours, covering all wards in the Kuppam municipality. An estimated 3 lakh people from Kuppam, and neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Karnataka thronged the venue during the festival. Till Wednesday noon, thousands of villagers offered prayers to the processional deity. The festival was concluded with the Viswaroopa Darshan of the Goddess on Wednesday.
