This U.S. Airport Will Take You the Longest to Walk Through, According to a New Study
There are few things worse than having to sprint full tilt from one airport gate to another as you attempt to make that ultra-short connection to your next flight. It's a stress-inducing moment that can be avoided by understanding the layout of the next airport you visit. In March, Kuru, a footwear company, revealed the findings of its analysis looking into which U.S. airports will take you the longest to walk across on your next trip. "Major hubs continue to add new concourses, longer terminals, and sprawling layouts to keep up with demand. And while that means more flights and better amenities, it also means more walking—or wheeling—before you even take off," the team explained. After looking at all the available information, it named Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) in Texas the longest walk of all. "DFW once again claims the longest airport walk in the U.S., holding its 2024 position with a 1.50-mile trek from the entrance to the farthest gate," the team shared." And really, that's no surprise when you learn that the airport takes up nearly square miles of space and has 171 gates spread across five terminals. MethodologyTo figure out the toughest airports to navigate, the team first created a seed list of the 10 largest and 10 smallest airports in the U.S. by land area (only including airports located within 60 miles of a major metropolitan area). It then analyzed Google Maps to measure the walking distance from the main airport entrance to the farthest airport gate. It then pared down the list to the 5 longest and the top 5 shortest airport walks. Other difficult to navigate airports to make the list include Denver International Airport (DEN) in Colorado with a walking distance of 1.14 miles at No. 2, followed by Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Virginia clocking in at .97 miles, Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) in Pennsylvania at 0.86 miles, and Orlando International Airport (MCO) in Florida at .70 miles. However, not every airport in the U.S. is a difficult one to navigate. According to the team, the Trenton-Mercer Airport (TTN) in New Jersey is a breeze, with a walking distance of just 0.03 Field (PAE) in Washington also made the list, coming in at No. 2 with just 0.04 miles to get across, followed by Tweed New Haven Airport (HVN) in Connecticut at 0.05 miles, Lihue Airport (LIH) in Hawaii at 0.06 miles, and 5. Harrisburg International Airport (MDT) in Pennsylvania at 0.12 miles. The team shared a few tips to ensure you get across your next airport with ease, including the most critical advice of all: Plan ahead. As a Floridian, I've Tested Dozens of Sandals—and I'm Packing This Supportive Platform Style on Every Trip
As a Floridian, I live in sandals almost year-round. When it gets really hot outside, the last thing I want to put on my feet are socks and sneakers. You might think that sandals are too flimsy and unsupportive to wear for all-day walking, but I've found they can be just as supportive as sneakers, while doubling as a stylish yet comfortable swap for heels for an evening out. If you're traveling carry-on only, packing versatile sandals is a huge pro for saving serious luggage space. Comfortable walking sandals do exist, and no, they don't all look like clunky podiatrist-prescribed orthopedic shoes. As a former cruise ship performer and current travel writer, I've tested dozens of sandals in my lifetime—and I own more than 30 pairs at this moment. When I test a new pair of sandals, I'm comparing them against years of personal trial, so I was surprised at how well the Kuru Loma Sandals performed, given the stiff competition they were up against. I wore the Kuru sandals exploring all 66 acres of Sarasota's John & Mabel Ringling Museum of Art, including the Ca' d'Zan mansion, the Circus Museum, and Bayfront Gardens. It's a lot of walking, and the Lomas delivered. The campus is so big you really need several days to explore it, but if you want to try and see it all in a day, it can be done with the right comfy footwear. I was initially hesitant about investing in a platform shoe because I typically prefer my sandals to be thin, lightweight, and packable to save space and weight in my carry-on. However, the platform sole is made out of lightweight, foam-like material that is virtually weightless. Another crucial aspect I noticed about the Kuru Lomas is the way they hugged my heels each time I took a step. The cork footbed cups your heel pad, while the platform material flexes to absorb impact. Our heels are the first thing to strike the ground when we walk, and they take the brunt of the impact of the stride, which is why the cushioning on these sandals is so important to absorb some of that impact. I also loved the impressive arch support in these shoes. I have the kinds of arches that don't touch the ground when I stand, so I need a high level of arch support from my shoes and sandals. Luckily, the same design that cups my heel when I walk in these Kuru platform sandals also cradles my arches and makes them supportive enough for all-day wear. The adjustable straps and flexible design add to the comfort of these shoes because I can get the perfect fit without the shoe being too tight or loose. And, the elastic cross strap on the Lomas is perfect because it wraps my foot and gives it the flexibility to move without a rubbing effect that could cause blisters. Finally, the Loma cork footbed wicks away moisture, which adds to the shoe's overall comfort by preventing wet, sweaty feet (that can lead to blisters). Since roaming the Ringling Museum, I've worn these shoes a lot more on daily walks and uneven terrain. They're still one of the most comfortable pairs of sandals I own. That said, the Velcro strap is starting to wear with heavy use, so I'd love to see a buckle option for durability. As an avid sandal wearer with above-average standards for arch support and long-wear comfort, I can say that the Kuru Lomas are worth buying. Here's where Rocky Mountain, other national parks rank for best hiking
DENVER - Rocky Mountain National Park is ranked high on a new list of the top 10 best national parks for quality hiking, just behind Great Smoky Mountains and Yellowstone. The parks were judged based on three criteria: number of hiking trails, number of visitors (as an indication of popularity) and user trail reviews found on the AllTrails app. The research was conducted by Kuru, which makes sneakers, sandals and hiking boots. Rocky Mountain National Park took third place with 220 hiking trails, 4.1 million visitors in 2024 and an average trail rating of 4.5 stars on the AllTrails 1-5 scale. "That 4.5 star rating? It's well-earned," according to Kuru's summary of the survey, "just like every breathtaking view above tree line." Great Smoky Mountains National Park, far and away the busiest U.S. national park with 12.1 million visitors, placed first with 348 trails and an average trail rating of 4.4 stars. It is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Appalachian range. At No. 2, Yellowstone in northwestern Wyoming came in with 252 trails, 4.7 million visitors and an average trail rating of 4.4. "Beyond geysers and bison, Yellowstone offers miles of trail magic," the report said. Zion, located in southwestern Utah, came in at No. 9 with 93 trails, 4.9 million visitors and a trail rating of 4.4. "Zion's towering sandstone walls and narrow slot canyons make it a mecca for thrill-seekers and photographers," the report said. "It's red rock bliss with rave reviews." Grand Teton in northwestern Wyoming placed 10th with 3.6 million visitors and a trail rating of 4.6. "Grand Teton may be last on this list, but it's high on impact," the report said. "The jagged skyline alone is worth the trip, but pair it with over 100 well-rated trails, and you've got a hiker's paradise."
