Speaking to KUNA, researcher in Kuwaiti-British relations and exhibition organizer Issa Dashti said the display traces the history of the British Council's presence in Kuwait since its establishment in 1955. The exhibition features key publications once used in Kuwaiti schools for teaching the English language, reflecting the Council's early role in shaping educational development. Dashti noted that the exhibition coincides with the 250th anniversary of Kuwaiti-British relations and commemorates this historic partnership through the presentation of rare, previously unpublished images documenting high-level visits over the decades. Among the highlights are photographs from the 1993 visit of King Charles III — then Prince of Wales — when he officially reopened the British Cultural Centre following the liberation of Kuwait. The exhibition also includes materials from his second visit to the country in 1997, further underscoring the depth of royal engagement in strengthening cultural ties. The exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to revisit key moments in the shared history of Kuwait and the United Kingdom, shedding light on their enduring partnership in the fields of culture and education. — KUNA

Documentary exhibit celebrates British Council legacy

KUWAIT CITY, July 8: The National Library of Kuwait on Tuesday hosted a documentary exhibition by British affairs researcher Issa Dashti, marking the 70th anniversary of the British Council in Kuwait and the 250th anniversary of Kuwaiti-British relations. Sheikha Hala Al-Bader Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah, British Ambassador to Kuwait Belinda Lewis and Director General of the library Siham Al-Azmi attended the event. In a statement on the sidelines of the event, Sheikha Hala Al-Bader expressed her appreciation for the British Council and its pioneering role since its founding in the 1950s. She pointed out that 'relations between Kuwait and the United Kingdom are not only political, but also extend to social, economic and cultural dimensions.' She revealed that 'the British Council, in its early days, enjoyed widespread interest among Kuwaitis keen on learning English, at a time Kuwaitis were fluent in multiple languages due to their travels and openness to the world.' She confirmed that 'the exhibition reflects this passion through photographs and documents chronicling historic visits by members of the British royal family, such as Prince Charles when he was Crown Prince, and Princess Anne.' Meanwhile, Al-Azmi emphasized that the exhibition is in line with the commitment of the library to document historical milestones that reflect the depth of cultural relations between Kuwait and friendly countries. Al-Azmi stressed that 'celebrating the 70th anniversary of the British Council is a platinum occasion that is part of the strategy of the library to enrich its archive of historical documents and photographs. Culture, art and literature are bridges that strengthen the presence of Kuwait on the Arab cultural map. We appreciate the role of the British Council in this context for more than seven decades.' Through the exhibition, Dashti showcased his personal collection of original photographs and artifacts documenting the British Council's activities since the 1950s; including educational materials, books and study aids that were distributed to council members to facilitate learning English. He highlighted the vital role of the council in supporting reading, traditional architecture and the arts, which contributed to strengthening ties between the two friendly peoples.

Lewis said 'We are proud to participate in the 12th trade exhibition entitled, 'Britain in Kuwait'. It celebrates the ongoing friendship and strong relations between our two countries. I urge everyone to visit the exhibition and learn about the pavilions that highlight many areas of cooperation between the United Kingdom and Kuwait, starting from trade and investment to culture and innovation. The British community is proud of its contribution to the development of Kuwait. We look forward to strengthening our partnership in the coming years.' Chairman of the organizing committee Ahmed Behbehani pointed out that 'His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad's patronage of the event confirms the deep and historic Kuwaiti-British relations, in addition to his commitment to support events and activities that deepen historical ties with Britain.' He added 'the Kuwaiti-British relations that extend for 250 years embody a distinctive model of relations built on solid foundations and based on historical friendship. It was crowned by the signing of the Kuwaiti-British Treaty of 1899 by HH the late Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah. The treaty confirmed the independence of Kuwaiti decision-making and kept Kuwait away from major international conflicts.' He stated that the 12th British Week in Kuwait has special importance as it coincides with the 64th anniversary of Independence Day and 34th Liberation Day of Kuwait; making it an extraordinary occasion for all participants in this event. He added the exhibition is considered one of the most important economic activities this year, as it represents the historical relationship between the United Kingdom and Kuwait. He said the success of previous sessions greatly contributed to the increasing demand for British and Kuwaiti participation in this economic event. 'We cannot forget the historical position of the United Kingdom during the brutal Iraqi invasion in 1990, the position of the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher towards Kuwait, and the mixing of British and Kuwaiti blood on the soil of Kuwait in 1991. All these remain a testimony that the relationship between the two friendly countries has always been a unique model among countries,' he concluded
