'I adopted a dog from a man I met on the street whose landlord didn't allow pets'
Several years ago, I spontaneously adopted a beautiful dog from a man I met on the street. We were on the waterfront in Cobh, and the young man was pleading (via a sign) for someone to take his beloved lurcher as the landlord of his new flat forbade dogs. As I was building in the countryside and urgently seeking a companion for another rescue, I told him I would take her to paradise. It was a lucky day for me, but that guy was left bereft and weeping as I drove away with his cherished pet. He knew he was welcome to come and see her at any time, and he called me to check on her progress on several occasions. Kya's daughter Faelen with their adopted lurcher Yemaya. Picture: Kya deLongchamps Yemaya was about six years old when we adopted her, and following spaying and microchipping, she lived happily for another ten years, until 2011. During her time with us, she was also delighted to act as foster mother to several other animals we took on through the Cork Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (CSPCA). Yemaya, pictured in winter 2010 with Kya's husband Charlie and their daughter Faelen, was adored by the entire family. Dogs Trust Ireland has reported a 112% rise over 5 years in the number of people giving up their pets because their new home won't allow pets of any kind (restricted or otherwise). Given that only 7% of rental properties advertised on Daft allow pets, it's no surprise. Dogs Trust Ireland has reported a 112% rise over five years in the number of people giving up their pets. File picture Dogs Trust Ireland received over 400 calls from distraught owners who could not find accommodation to suit in 2024. It has multiple stories to share about the distress of being faced with this heartbreaking situation, fighting for the right to keep animals that most people regard as nothing short of family. One duo who faced this struggle is Celia Madrid Delgado and her dog Kai, reports the charity. 'Celia works as a canine carer at our re-homing centre in Dublin and had to apply to 300 properties before she found a rental home that would allow Kai,' according to Dogs Trust Ireland. The charity has set up a petition to demand government offer more flexible rental agreements for pet owners while protecting landlords from disruptive, destructive, or unsafe situations that could raise liability issues. For a link to the petition, go to The website also offers a useful list for landlords who might consider renting their property to a pet owner, with a list of recommendations. If you are renting or have rented in the past, try to secure a positive behaviour review for your dog or cat from your landlord, as this might prove a clincher in persuading an uncertain owner to let to you. An assurance that the property you rented previously was also kept in good order would be ideal. Generally, if you are ultimately forced to give up a dog, cat, bird or small furry, contact your local authority kennels or recognised animal charities first, and don't forget to ask for the help of your vet in sourcing a suitable new home. Brit DJ, 24, left in coma with bleed on brain in Zante after horror accident
A promising DJ is now fighting for his life in the Greek holiday hotspot after suffering a horrific accident, with his devastated girlfriend giving an update on his condition A young DJ on an "amazing" job in Zante is now fighting for his life after a horrific quad big accident. Kai Roberts, from Pembrokeshire in Wales, was in the Greek party hotspot after being offered the opportunity to support the likes of Tom Zanetti at a club. But on Sunday (June 29), tragedy struck when the quad bike he was riding with a friend slammed into a wall. His friend escaped with minor injuries but doctors discovered a bleed on Kai's brain when he was rushed to hospital and he was placed in an induced coma. His devastated girlfriend, Kya Gillane-Heywood, who had been by his side in Greece, has now spoken of her shock. Speaking to the Mirror from the holiday hotspot, she said: 'It is horrible. It is weird because we are all still in shock so it doesn't feel real but at the same time it is just crazy because it is so real if that makes any sense? I don't know how to describe it.' Kai works at a dairy factory back home in Pembrokeshire, Wales, while working part-time as a DJ at weekends. He was loving life this summer after being given the "amazing opportunity" to take a DJ residence at Ikon club in Zante for the summer. Explaining what happened, Kya said: 'It was Sunday and it happened around 5pm. They were out on the quads and obviously then they had the accident. 'One of the girls is out here with me, she found out and I didn't have my phone with me at the time. She came and found me and told me so I rang the other boy he was with to see what was going on. 'At that point they didn't think it was as serious. It turned out when he got to the medical centre, they transferred him straight to the hospital and they did a CT scan and he had a bleed on the brain.' Kai, who was due to return today (July 1) having been out in Greece since June 1, was then placed in an induced coma so he could be flown to mainland Greece. He is now in intensive care with a team of neurosurgeons. The last update Kya heard was that Kai remained in a coma and had not gotten any better or worse. But with no improvements being made to his condition, his family members, some of whom have flown to Greece to be by his side, are anxiously waiting for more positive news. His girlfriend has started a fundraiser, which has already raised over £5,000, and she told us why funds were vital. She said: 'Kai has a lot of friends everywhere because he is an amazing person and everyone loves him. 'We are not sure if the insurance will cover him and that is not what we have been sorting at the minute so the cost to his family coming out to be with him. 'Potentially medical costs because when he does recover, which hopefully he will, he will not be able to work. So it will support him and his family.' A station manager at Pure West Radio, where Kai hosts a house music show, has also spoken about the accident. Toby Ellis said: 'It's been an incredibly difficult 24 hours for all of us at Pure West Radio as we come to terms with the news about one of the PWR Dance Family DJs, Kai Roberts, who has suffered a serious head injury following a quad bike accident in Zante yesterday.' And speaking about a fundraising event at different clubs on Saturday July 26, he added: 'This is the first time all of these nightclubs have been on the same bill together.

Hit Netflix movie racks up a staggering 23 million views in a week
Caroline Westbrook Published May 15, 2025 2:17pm Link is copied Comments It's that time of the week again, when we get to find out which movies have been lighting up the world of Netflix subscribers. Whether you're in the mood for a feel-good story, a compelling documentary or even a tense, suspense-filled action thriller, there's no shortage of options in this week's global top 10 chart. And it's also a week which sees non-English language movies making their mark with a whole brace of films from across the world racking up the millions alongside the Hollywood blockbusters. Let's get into it, shall we? Kicking off with this adaptation of Delia Owens' best-seller, Where the Crawdads Sing tells the story of Kya (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a young woman who grows up isolated in the marshes of North Carolina (although the movie was shot in Louisiana). When a local man is found dead, Kya becomes the prime suspect, leading to a gripping courtroom battle (Picture: Sony Pictures/Everett/REX/Shutterstock) Given how popular the Twilight saga was in the Noughties, a film version of Stephenie Meyer's book series seemed almost inevitable. Now the original film is making its presence known in the Netflix charts, with Kristen Stewart as teenager Bella Swan, and Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen - the vampire she falls in love with. The perfect nostalgia trip for your inner Noughties teenager (Picture: Summit Entertainment) The first of this week's new entries takes a deep dive into the world of Colombian singer-songwriter Karol G - aka Carolina Giraldo Navarro. The documentary sees the Grammy-award-winning star, considered one of the most influential figures in Reggaeton and urban pop, discuss her rise to stardom while navigating a sold-out stadium tour and releasing a new album (Picture: Netflix) Directed by Gareth Evans, known for The Raid, this one stars Tom Hardy as Detective Walker, a shady cop forced to navigate a city's criminal underworld after a drug deal goes awry. Expect plenty of brutal, visceral action in this one - including a memorable scene where Hardy's Walker uses a harpoon gun in a pretty gruesome way - and a plot which borders on the ridiculous. But it's still a lot of fun (Picture: Netflix) Another feature-length documentary now, this one focusing on the case of Jason Corbett, an Irish widower who was killed in a violent attack at his home in 2015. His American au-pair Molly Martens - whom he was in a relationship with - and her father, FBI agent Thomas Martens, claimed self-defence, with Molly pleading no contest and her dad pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter. But what really happened that night? This film, which looks at both sides of the case, aims to find the answers (Picture: Netflix) Another crime thriller now and a 2019 sequel to Spike Lee's 2006 hit starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster and Chiwitel Ajiofor. However, none of them appear in this belated follow-up in which an NYPD hostage negotiator and a federal agent join forces to rescue a group of tourists held hostage during a siege at the US Federal Reserve (Picture: Netflix) This charming movie with an all-star cast has taken Netflix by storm in its first three days, notching up more than 15 million views in the process. It tells the true story of Joe Scarvarella, the Staten Island restaurateur who honours his late mother by opening an Italian restaurant staffed by grandmothers - and features an all-star cast with the likes of Susan Sarandon and Lorraine Bracco on board. In any other week this would have already been your number one movie. But this is not any other week... (Picture: Jeong Park/Netflix) Pitching in at number three with an impressive number of views is this French thriller, the latest in a series of films which also includes 2020's Lost Bullet and Lost Bullet 2 (2022). This one sees a return for Lino (Alban Lenoir), an ex-convict and getaway driver who builds cars for criminal purposes. Except in this sequel he is out for revenge (Picture: Dupuy/Netflix) Not to be confused with the recent kidfluencer documentary of the same name, Bad Influence - this week's highest new entry - is a Spanish thriller which has proven to be a huge hit with viewers. The plot sees an ex-con hired to protect a wealthy heiress from a stalker, but as they grow closer the chemistry between them becomes impossible to ignore (Picture: Netflix) Still pulling in viewers by the veritable truckload - and earning it a second week in the top spot - is this German action-thriller. Jeanne Goursaud takes the lead as Sara Wulf, a former Special Forces soldier. When her son disappears during a visa appointment at the US Consulate in Frankfurt, Sara uncovers a conspiracy involving corrupt officials and a cover-up tied to a past military mission of hers. The film's been picking up comparisons to Die Hard - and it's certainly pretty intense stuff
