Former Wisconsin basketball star shines in NBA Summer League debut
Former Wisconsin basketball star John Tonje shined for the Utah Jazz in his NBA Summer League debut on Monday. In Utah's exhibition against the San Antonio Spurs, the Nebraska native accounted for 16 points, three rebounds and three assists in 23 minutes of action. He did so off an efficient 5-of-9 clip from the field and 4-of-7 mark from 3-point range, something Badger fans grew accustomed to during his collegiate tenure in Madison. Advertisement As a starter alongside Kyle Filipowski, Isaiah Collier, Cody Williams and Elijah Harkless, Tonje's first bucket arrived with roughly nine minutes to spare in the opening frame. Collier, who played college basketball at USC during the 2023-24 season, rifled a pass to the former Badger in the left corner. Tonje, who nearly set the single-season scoring mark for UW a season ago, drilled his first shot attempt. Arguably, his most critical bucket arrived with 36 ticks remaining in the fourth quarter. Down 82-80, Tonje found himself open on the left wing off an off-ball screen. Collier, who tallied 12 assists in the contest, found him for a wide-open look from deep. The attempt lifted Utah to an 83-82 edge before former Rutgers star Dylan Harper sent the game into overtime. The Spurs would ultimately secure a 93-91 triumph in the extra period courtesy of a game-winning look from Riley Minix. Nonetheless, Tonje made his presence felt throughout the bulk of his time on the hardwood. Prior to Monday, Utah did play several summer league contests in both Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, games that Tonje missed with a right ankle ailment. His former Badger and current Jazz teammate, Steven Crowl, did not play on Monday. Advertisement The 6-foot-5 wing arrived in Utah after being selected with the 53rd overall pick of the 2025 NBA draft. His stellar 19.6-point, 5.3-rebound, 1.8-assist per game output at Wisconsin in 2024-25 lifted him into professional conversations. He witnessed his NBA dreams morph into a reality on June 26. The Jazz will continue their summer league slate with a test against the Washington Wizards at 10:00 p.m. ET on June 16. Duke Just Picked Its Best NBA Summer League Player — And It's Not Cooper Flagg
Duke Just Picked Its Best NBA Summer League Player — And It's Not Cooper Flagg originally appeared on Athlon Sports. While many eyes are on Dallas Mavericks rookie forward Cooper Flagg amid the 2025 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, he's not the only former Duke Blue Devils star attracting attention. Advertisement On Monday, Utah Jazz big man Kyle Filipowski made his alma mater proud with yet another stellar performance during a matchup against the San Antonio Spurs. Filipowski led all scorers from both sides with a 35-point eruption, hitting shots from different areas on the floor. He shot 11-for-19 from the field and went 5-for-9 from deep. The former ACC Rookie of the Year, added 11 rebounds, an assist and a steal in 32 minutes of action. The Jazz ended up losing in overtime, 93-91, but not without Filipowski turning more fans into believers. Duke even gave him a shoutout after his terrific night in Las Vegas."Best player so far @NBASummerLeague‼️🎰 @kylefilipowski," declared the Blue Devils in a post on X. Utah Jazz forward Kyle Filipowski (22) reacts after scoring against the San Antonio Spurs. © Lucas Peltier-Imagn Images Standing 6-foot-11, Filipowski is a talented scorer who can get buckets from the perimeter and at the post. He's not known for his athleticism, but Filipowski can surprise defenders with his decent ballhandling for a big man and quickness to the basket, as evidenced by his game-tying dunk off the dribble late in overtime of the Spurs game. Advertisement Through three games in the Summer League, the 21-year-old Filipowski is leading all players with 29.3 points on a 56.1 percent shooting from the floor. With a full year of experience in the pros and seemingly growing confidence, Filipowski could be in line for a breakout season in the 2025-26 campaign with the Jazz, who took him in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft. Riley Minix hits overtime game winner as the Spurs beat the Jazz
The clock read 1.9 seconds. Utah Jazz big man Kyle Filipowski stormed around the court screaming, 'This is my (expletive)' and a few other curse words. He was rightfully fired up after a game-tying poster dunk over San Antonio Spurs rookie Carter Bryant. His exuberance would be short-lived. San Antonio drew up a play to get Bryant some revenge with a lob or give the ball to their second overall pick, Dylan Harper, who had sent the game to overtime with a game-tying layup at the end of regulation. With neither option open, the ball found the hands of undrafted free agent turned two-way player, Riley Minix. The Morehead State product quickly turned to the baseline and put up a prayer fadeaway that splashed in to secure a 93-91 win over the Jazz. Advertisement With the win, the Spurs improved to 3-0 in the Las Vegas Summer League and have a +29 point differential. A win on Thursday night against the Charlotte Hornets would likely put San Antonio in the semi-finals with a chance to win the summer league championships. They don't hang banners for summer league titles, but it's great to see the young squad competing at a high level. The communication, defensive effort, and resilience are exactly what you'd like to see from a group of young, hungry players. Chief among those players is David Jones-Garcia, who had another great game for the Spurs. He finished with 28 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists while shooting 5-11 from three. Jones-Garcia is having an unbelievable summer league run. Forget a two-way contract, he deserves a full-time roster spot. Whether it is in San Antonio or elsewhere. Typically, the 'too good for summer league' title is reserved for second-year players who are forced to play a few games before getting shut down. Jones-Garcia is the rare G Leaguer who is truly too good for this stage. He's ready for the NBA. Harper was solid in his second summer league game. He had 16 points, but struggled with turnovers, coughing up the ball 5 times. Bryant's offensive woes continued as he finished with 5 points on 2-11 shooting from the field. He continues to shine on the defensive end and had two blocks in the win. Advertisement This was a bounce-back game for Harrison Ingram, who has struggled a bit in the summer league. He made good passes and fought hard on the glass. He notched a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds while tossing 6 assists. The Spurs will have a tough test ahead of them in the Hornets, who are also undefeated. Harper's status will be one to watch. He played 25 minutes, more than the 20-minute restriction San Antonio put him on in his first game. Either way, the Spurs should have plenty of exciting players to watch as the summer league comes to a close. More from

Spurs' Riley Minix hits buzzer-beater in Summer League matchup moments after Jazz's Kyle Filipowski throws down poster
Riley Minix hit a fadeaway bucket from the short corner to stun Kyle Filipowski and the Jazz on Monday night. () Kyle Filipowski thought he sent the game into double overtime on Monday night at the Thomas & Mack Center. The former Duke star and Utah Jazz center threw down a huge dunk with just 1.9 seconds left in the extra period of their Summer League game with the San Antonio Spurs to tie things up in incredible fashion. Advertisement But instead, it was Riley Minix who called game on the other end. Minix caught an inbounds pass and hit a fadeaway contested bucket from the short corner to lift the Spurs to the win — which sparked a huge celebration on the floor in Las Vegas. Minix played his way into a two-way deal with the Spurs last summer after he went undrafted out of Morehead State. He missed most of the year, however, after he tore his labrum in his left shoulder and needed season-ending surgery in January. Minix had 13 points and six rebounds in the win for the Spurs, which pushed them to a perfect 3-0 in Las Vegas. The shot was only made possible by Filipowski, who grabbed a rebound off a missed free throw on the other end and somehow managed to fight his way into position to complete one of the best dunks of the night. Filipowski averaged 9.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game last season with the Jazz, who selected him with the No. 32 overall pick in the draft last summer. He had an incredible 35 points and 11 rebounds in the loss for Utah on Monday night. The Jazz now sit at 0-3. Advertisement This post will be updated with more information shortly.

Utah Jazz vs Golden State Warrios Las Vegas Summer League recap and final score
In a game that disappointed Utah Jazz fans with the lack of Ace Bailey playing, there was a nice showing from Cody Williams and Kyle Filipowski in the Jazz's 103-93 loss to the Golden State Warriors. Kyle Filipowski playing well is not a big surprise with him having an impressive summer league so far. In this one, Filipowski had 21 points and 6 rebounds. He continues to put up numbers and is likely worthy of being sent home. The Jazz may need him for the simple fact that they need bigs on the floor. Filipowski has not defended the rim well in this summer league but he showing some nice signs on the perimeter defensivly. There may be a world where he solidifies his position at the power forward, and it becomes a staple to his game. Advertisement I'm trying not to overreact, but Cody Williams is getting better. In the second half in this one, Cody Williams really found his groove and looked comfortable driving to the basket and scoring. Williams is showing signs that he's not a player to give up on ... at all. Williams had 22 points on 8/17 shooting from the field. He only shot 1/6 from three, which makes that 2PT FG% really high. He also threw 4 assists and grabbed 3 steals. He's looking like a player who's getting more and more comfortable and confident. It's just summer league, but this is exactly what you want to see from Williams. Probably the most surprising thing is how good he looks handing the ball. Williams is driving to the basket and not turning the ball over at a high rate. The biggest thing for him right now is just shooting the three. His shot is not quite there yet and will take time, but that's something the Jazz have and can allow him a chance to develop. It's a game day tomorrow, and we'll see if Ace Bailey plays. If not, we get a chance to see if Cody Williams can keep up this level of play. More from
