Phillies' Bryce Harper Says 'Standstill' is Reason for Monday Return to Lineup
Phillies' Bryce Harper Says 'Standstill' is Reason for Monday Return to Lineup originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After what seemed like a painstakingly long month of June, Bryce Harper is set to make his return to the Philadelphia Phillies' lineup. Harper will bat third and play first base Monday night against the San Diego Padres. Advertisement Bryce had missed the previous 22 games with right wrist inflammation - shortly before that, he sat out for most of six outings following a fastball to the elbow. When asked about why he is returning to action tonight, Harper had a candid answer: "I didn't think I was going to take any other steps forward of feeling better or anything," Harper said before Monday's game. "I thought we were kinda at a standstill and feeling the same the last couple of days. From BP to live (pitching), stuff like that, gave us the same results each day, so I thought today was good." Harper had previously stated that the wrist issue was something he tried to play through early in the season. His response here seems to indicate that his discomfort is not completely gone, but it's now manageable enough again. Advertisement It's also a good sign that he is returning straight to first base, as opposed to extended time at DH like in 2022 and early 2023. Bryce Harper started 56 games at first base this season before landing on the injured Ross-Imagn Images Harper slashed .258/.368/.446 with nine home runs, 13 doubles, and 34 RBI before missing most of last month. His bat will hopefully reignite a Philly offense that has sputtered in terms of power numbers lately - they scored only one run all series at the Houston Astros, then three combined between Saturday and Sunday at the Atlanta Braves. First pitch against the Padres is scheduled for 6:35 PM, with Harper and the Phillies facing off against 28-year-old righty Matt Waldron. Analysis-Soccer-Brazilian flair trumps European complacency as Flamengo humble Chelsea
Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Group D - Flamengo v Chelsea - Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. - June 20, 2025 Flamengo fans celebrate after Bruno Henrique scores their first goal IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters/Kyle Ross PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) -Flamengo delivered a potent reminder that the so-called superiority of European teams in club football is fading quickly after the Brazilian outfit beat Chelsea 3-1 in a Club World Cup contest that felt like a home match thousands of miles from Rio. The Brazilian champions turned Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field into a tropical carnival, with 55,000 passionate supporters creating an atmosphere that was in stark contrast to Chelsea's casual approach to the tournament. Just 24 hours after Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said the competition had "a pre-season feeling" to it and that he would rotate key starters throughout the group stage, his side became the second European giants in two days to be humbled by Brazilian opposition. Friday's result followed Paris St Germain's shock 1-0 defeat by Botafogo a day earlier that had ended Europe's 13-year dominance over South American opposition in intercontinental club football. Pedro Neto's opener for Chelsea proved to be a false start as they were given the run around following the interval. Flamengo, under the tactical guidance of former Blues defender Filipe Luis, responded with a ruthlessness that their theoretically superior rivals could not match. Bruno Henrique and Danilo struck in quick succession to flip the contest, before Nicolas Jackson's reckless red card – for a studs-up challenge that illustrated Chelsea's loss of composure – paved the way for youngster Wallace Yan to deliver the coup de grace. "When we conceded the first goal their fans started to be loud, and immediately after we conceded the second one," Chelsea's Marc Cucurella told DAZN, his words revealing the psychological impact of Flamengo's thunderous support. Following Yan's goal, the supporters let out synchronised chants of "olé" to hail their team's achievement. On Thursday, Botafogo put on a brilliant defensive performance to pull off the unexpected win over PSG, who had been in imperious form as they followed up their 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan in the Champions League final by routing Atletico Madrid 4-0 in their Club World Cup opener. Botafogo's solid discipline left PSG looking feeble and a shadow of the team that dominated European football throughout the season. "Botafogo were the team that has defended best against us all season. They were efficient. The only thing left for me is to congratulate them," PSG boss Luis Enrique told reporters. With Lionel Messi's Inter Miami also victorious against Porto, European clubs are in danger of returning home empty-handed from a tournament they had been odds on favourite to win. Educational support workers in Winnipeg School Division give strike mandate to union
Support workers in the Winnipeg School Division have given their union bargaining committee a strike mandate. The Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union represents about 1,800 educational assistants, clerks and other support workers, such as library techs, crossing guards, dispatchers, computer techs and food co-ordinators. They've been without a contract since July 1, 2024. Voting to support a strike took place from June 16-18 but there is no plan yet to hit the picket lines, a union spokesperson said, adding the bargaining committee will continue its work during the summer. The vote follows a recent member survey which showed growing dissatisfaction, with many saying they have considered leaving their job in the past year for better wages elsewhere as the cost of living keeps rising, a news release from MGEU said. Other school divisions pay support workers more, which puts the Winnipeg School Division at risk of losing staff, MGEU president Kyle Ross said in the release.

Dominant Flamengo beat Esperance 2-0 at Club World Cup

The Brazilian side dominated from start to finish on a chilly evening at a half-empty Lincoln Financial Field, with Esperance managing only two attempts on goal. Flamengo opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Guillermo Varela surged down the right and delivered a pinpoint cross to Luiz Araujo, who cushioned the ball into the path of Arrascaeta to fire home. Esperance struggled to get a foothold on the match, with Flamengo enjoying 80% possession, but they enjoyed their best moments after the break with Youcef Belaili providing a rare spark. After curling a shot narrowly wide in the 63rd minute, Belaili forced Flamengo goalkeeper Augustin Rossi into a sharp save with a close-range effort five minutes later. However, Flamengo quickly reasserted control to silence the lively Tunisian support behind the south goal and in the 70th minute they doubled their lead through Araujo. Former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Jorginho played an incisive through ball for Araujo to break the offside trap and after cutting inside he curled a precise left-footed strike into the bottom corner. The win puts Flamengo level on points with Chelsea at the top of Group D, after the London club also secured a 2-0 victory over LAFC earlier in the day. Flamengo and Chelsea meet on Friday in a match likely to determine the group winner. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Officer stabbed twice in back by inmate at Brandon Correctional Centre, police say
Social Sharing A corrections officer was rushed to hospital in Brandon after being stabbed twice in the back by an inmate at the provincial jail, police say. The 47-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the stabbing on Monday, said police, who were called to the Brandon Correctional Centre around 8:45 p.m. A 41-year-old man is charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, aggravated assault of a peace officer and assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm. The Brandon Police Service is "deeply concerned for the well-being of the staff member injured," and its major crimes unit is investigating, a news release said Wednesday. It did not identify the staff member's position at the medium-security facility, but Kyle Ross, president of the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union, said it was a corrections officer. "It's a real unfortunate event, where one of our officers was attacked and stabbed while on the job," he said. "[It] must be very difficult for that worker right now. We haven't had an opportunity to connect [with] them [but] we're hoping we can soon." Ross doesn't know how long the officer has been working there. There are many staff in jails aside from corrections officers, including those in administration, health care, social work and counselling, rehabilitation, education, food services and maintenance. An internal review has been launched at the correctional centre to examine the circumstances and reinforce safety measures for both staff and inmates, the Brandon Police Service news release said. CBC News reached out to the province about the scope of the internal review, whether any immediate changes have been made and how long the review is expected to take. A spokesperson provided the following response: "Standard operational review, as would occur after every serious incident. No timeline." 'Challenging job' A 27-year-old inmate at the facility was charged just a few months ago with first-degree murder in the death of his 23-year-old cellmate. The cellmate was repeatedly punched and kicked, police said. He was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries. "Working in correctional facilities is a challenging job, and right now, with the [inmate] counts being as high as they are, it's getting more challenging for our workers, and we're hopeful we can find ways to make it safer for them and the inmates they're in charge of," Ross said. The Brandon Correctional Centre has a capacity of 244 inmates. Ross was not sure how many are currently there. In comparison, "there is barely enough staff" to deal with the challenges, he said. "Workers are being stretched thinner than they'd like." Recruitment efforts by the province are underway, "but it's a difficult job to recruit for," Ross said. "When I speak to the officers, I hear it often: it's a very different job compared to 10 years ago. The inmates that are in these facilities are far more dangerous and more volatile than they were in the past." There are more gangs and illicit drug use among inmates, he said.
